N e w s l e t t e r

I find it a deeply important and sobering experience to assume the heavy responsibility of my official appointment as Chairman of the milestone 30th Meeting of the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery (JSHBPS). It is a great honor for the Department of Gastroenterological Surgery of Yokohama City University School of Medicine to have this chance to organize this historical and traditional meeting. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the directors and councilors who approved this decision.

The JSHBPS has made steady progress. We have launched an English journal, an overseas training system, a system for highly skilled expert surgeons, research projects led by JSHBPS, and other activities too numerous to mention. This is because of medical practices, research, and education that have continued to be developed by numerous hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgeons from the Meiji to the Heisei era. I believe that the embodiment

of these efforts is today’s JSHBPS. As a result of these continuous efforts, JSHBPS has grown to become the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA)’s largest society with the highest number of members in the world.

Thus, the next goal of the world’s preeminent JSHBPS will be to promote globalization, that is, to disseminate these brilliant Japanese surgical techniques, medical practices, and basic research beyond borders to the rest of the world. The 6th Biennial Congress of the Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (A-PHPBA2017) (29th JSHBPS), hosted by the Congress Chair, Professor Masakazu Yamamoto, will be conducted entirely in English. Subsequently, the 30th JSHBPS will be put to the test as we aim to be the first meeting in Japan held completely in English. In that sense, we have set the theme of the 30th JSHBPS as “The Second Opening of Japan on the Way to a Bright Future.”

On the first day of the meeting, we have prepared a ceremony to commemorate our 30th anniversary where we would like past founders and presidents to talk about and look back on the hard work in the society’s fledgling stages and the progress made so far, as well prospects for the future. I also believe that we may watch heated discussions between invited guests from overseas and top leaders from Japan on many projects. I hope that we will be able to create an academic program that will be satisfactory for all participants.

Many meetings have been held in Yokohama. We would like to make use of this local advantage and plan a fun social program for all attendees. Heated discussions are an important part of this meeting; however, we would be delighted to also provide you with a chance to heal in an atmosphere of Yokohama that you may have not yet experienced.

We look forward to your participation.

In 1988, we had plans to create a unified academic society in the field of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery, aiming at disseminating information from Japan around the world, and internationalizing and establishing the world’s pre-eminent academic society. The Japan Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Forum was established in 1989, and in 1993, the society name was changed to the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery (JSHBPS). JSHBPS also carries out international activities in parallel, including the organization of the 1st Asian Society of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Surgery (ASHBPS) in Bangkok in 1991 and creating stronger connections with surgeons in other Asian countries and participating surgeons from Europe and the United States. Such connections have led to multi-lateral and multi-institute collaborative research, which have also developed into Observership, a unique studying-abroad program in JSHBPS (http://www.jshbps.jp/modules/en/index.php?cat_id=6). In 1994, I was involved in the founding of the International

Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) as the representative of JSHBPS. We jointly organized the 5th IHPBA in Tokyo in 2002 with the Science Council of Japan. ASHBPS became A-P HPBA in 2007, and the Joint Congress of The 6th Biennial Congress of the Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association & The 29th Meeting of the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery (6th A-P HPBA/29th JSHBPS) will be held in 2017 in Yokohama. The congress now fully uses English as its primary language. We published the Tokyo Guidelines (TG 07, 13), international guidelines for diagnoses, and are also involved in the publication of TG 18. The JSHBPS has no official journal printed in Japanese, and in 1993, started the publication of the JHBPS: Journal of Hepatobiliary Pancreatic Sciences in English to continue to disseminate information to other parts of the world. The impact factor in 2015 was 3.146.I am very pleased that the 30th Meeting of Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery will be held in

Yokohama. I am honored to serve as the Chair of the 30th Anniversary Commemorative Event Committee and as former President. The technologies, treatment, and research on hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery in Japan lead the world in every area and are presented at this meeting, which is a great opportunity to showcase the level of Japan to the rest of the world. From 2012, when I was President, I aimed at the development of a more global academic society and introduced the concept of presenting our findings in English. We also invited experts in hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery from various countries around the world, who have given many lectures and exchanged ideas and opinions. As a result , we started a joint membership system with the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association/Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA/A-PHPBA), which has advanced the international development of our own Society. Hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery also needs to develop rapid

responses to the swift spread of laparoscopic surgery in recent years. Since 2015, we have established a pre-operative registration system for all cases in which laparoscopic hepatectomy is scheduled and have developed a system that can provide safer and less invasive medical care to the people. In this way, the Society has been working for 30 years to develop medical care in hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery, as well as institute responses for a diverse and international society. I hope that this milestone 30th commemorative meeting will be a significant gathering for the development of the next generation of hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery.

On behalf of the Japanese Society of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgery (JSHBPS), it is my great pleasure to invite you to the 30th Annual Congress of the JSHBPS to be held June 7-9, 2018 in Yokohama, Japan. The JSHBPS, which succeeded the Japanese Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Surgical Forum established in 1989, was founded by Honorary President Prof. Tadahiro Takada in 1993. The society has seen enormous growth and interest over the past years, and its membership surpassed 3500 in 2016. The aims of the JSHBPS are to provide safe surgery for patients with hepatobiliary pancreatic disease, to publish the Journal of Hepato-Biliary-Pancreatic Sciences (IF=3.146) and to globalize the society. The 30th Annual Congress of the JSHBPS will be a memorial congress and will be truly global with all presentations and discussion conducted exclusively in English. June is the best season in Japan. We hope that you will join us at the congress and participate in sharing the latest knowledge and techniques in the field of hepatobiliary pancreatic surgery.

We look forward to seeing you in Yokohama in June 2018.

Greetings
