which she favours over her previous home at St Albans. It was in Tenlands that the birthday bash was held and Mrs Cameron was also the proud recipient of a con-gratulatory card from the Queen. Mayor of Ferryhill, Pauline Crathorne, was also in at-tendance to congratulate the centenarian.

Evelyn was suffering from bad health a few years ago so the family is joyous that she has reached her 100th birthday. Neville said: “We did not think we would be here today, but she’s certainly improved - the staff here do a good job.” Evelyn also has eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Emma Donaldson, in a family portrait with her daughter, Molly Rose and husband, Alistair.

Road crash victim named as Ferryhill deputy head teacher The family of Emma Donaldson, deputy head teacher at The Woodlands School in Broom Road, Fer-ryhill, who died following a road collision last week, have paid tribute to her.Emma, aged 42, died in hospital two days after she was struck by a Saab car in Littletown, where she lived, between Durham and Haswell, on the evening of Tuesday, 26th January. She was the mother of nine-year-old Molly Rose and wife of Alistair. She was also the stepmother of Alistair’s two adult sons.In a statement, her family said: “Emma was a loving, caring, kind and funny mother and stepmother. She was a really special person, very hard working, extremely intelligent and always made time for others.“She deeply loved her family and friends and we will never forget the times she made us laugh and cry, even if it was at her expense, but that’s what she loved and is the reason we all will truly miss her. Emma was at the centre of our family’s universe, we will always love her and she will always be in our hearts, never forgotten.“Emma was a bright shining star in our lives and words are not enough to encapsu-late our grief. “She had the kindest of hearts, a smile for all, a strong moral compass and dedicated her life to teaching because she believed she could make a difference to every child’s life.“She was an utterly devoted mummy to Molly Rose and we are in complete disbe-lief that Emma will not be around to see her beautiful daughter grow up. “She was a loving wife, beloved daughter and best

friend to her two sisters. Our world will never be the same without her. We are aching because she was our everything, Emma was truly the very best this world could hold. “She had a life full of dreams, love and laughter to look forward to, a daughter to cherish forever and a very special part in a family that loved her. Her life has been taken away too soon and in such a non-sensical way, but we are privileged and honoured to say that she was ours.

“We want to extend our gratitude to the staff at James Cook Hospital, the Air Ambulance Service and the emergency services, but most of all to the members of the public who stopped to attend to Emma. “We take great comfort from the actions of these people and have been overwhelmed by the support we have received. “We hope soon to cel-ebrate Emma’s life in a way fitting to the wonderful person she was.”

Dear Editor,

The residents of Ramsay Drive have noticed that over the last month or so that an irresponsible dog owner has been walking through the estate and letting their dog defecate on the pavement and in people’s drives and failing to pick up the mess.

The authorities have been notified and dog wardens will be looking for the culprit so if it’s you, we suggest you start to act responsibly as we’re sure an £80 fine, which could buy 8,000 poo bags, wouldn’t go down well.

Regards,

Joseph Gill, aged 53, of Palm Road, West Cornforth, pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer in the ex-ecution of his duty, when he appeared at Newton Aycliffe Magistrates’ Court. The court heard that, on New Year’s Day, officers responded to a 999 call by a female and found the de-fendant at the address. They were concerned that Gill may have been respon-sible for an assault and found him to be agitated and intoxicated. Gill punched an officer to the jaw, so he was re-strained, taken to the floor and handcuffed. In defence, it was stated that Gill did not dispute the

facts presented in the case but he had little recollec-tion of them. Gill and his wife were said to be going through a dif-ficult time, as their son had committed suicide in November and to help cope with these unfortunate, sad circumstances, they had been drinking. Before sentencing, Gill declared that he worked in London, as a tunnel inspec-tor and was due to return there the following week. His declared substantial earnings, of £21,000 per month, were reflected in the fine of £720 and further court costs of £85 and victim compensation of £75 were also imposed.

Rev Gary Norman, the new vicar of St Luke’s with Bishop of Durham, Paul Butler after his induction ceremony at the Ferryhill church on 26th January.

Rev Gary Norman is the new vicar of St Luke’s

On Tuesday 26th January, Rev Gary Norman became the Vicar of St Luke’s and Holy Trinity West Cornforth. The church was filled to capacity with parishioners from Cornforth and Fer-ryhill as well as friends, family and supporters from his previous parishes of Kirk Merrington, Tudhoe and Croxdale. Everyone was gathered to see Canon David Kennedy present Gary to Bishop Paul Butler, Bishop of Durham.

He was then inducted to the role by The Venerable Ian Jagger, Arch Deacon of Durham. Gary studied archaeology and spent over two years living on Lindisfarne. He spent time with the church-based charity USPG working in Ramallah, Pal-estine where his work with families and orphans ended abruptly with the start of the First Gulf War. Gary was Ordained in 2004, attending Cuddes-

don College, and became a priest in 2005.Gary is married to Dawn and has three children: Aidan 17, Hope 13 and Aaron 12. Rev Gary said recently: “I’m really looking forward to meeting and getting to know the good people of Ferryhill and Cornforth and working with our church families at the heart of community life. This is an exciting new chapter for us and it’s great to be here.”

Chilton College is asking readers of the Chapter if they want to improve their lifestyle, feel better about themselves and talk to people who know how to make this happen? “Then why not come along to Chilton Community College on a Wednesday evening between 6pm and 8pm,” said a spokesperson, “and meet up with our friendly and knowledge-able ‘wellbeing for life’

staff. It’s free and our health professionals can show you just how easy it can be to feel so much better about yourself. “We already have local residents in attendance and they are looking at everything from cooking within a budget to stopping smoking.”For more information contact the team on 0800 8766887 or the college on 01388 720911.

They were heading along Chilton Lane in Ferryhill Station just after 9am when the strong winds uprooted a tree from a nearby garden. It crashed onto the bonnet of their Nissan Note, also bringing down a power cable.Luckily the mum and daughter were not badly hurt and were taken to hospital in Durham for treatment to minor injuries. The car, however, was badly damaged.Susan McKay, 49, of Fer-ryhill Station said: “I was screaming and panicking.“I was trapped by the steering column and the tree brought power lines down onto my daughter’s side of the car.“We couldn’t get free and I was thinking our number was up but people were

gawping at us.“There were people I rec-ognised and others had gone out of their way after hearing about it to come and look, to get pictures.“I was begging them to help and to get my daughter out but no one did. “I’d like to think I would rush to help not watch.”Susan, who is recover-ing from a serious illness, was travelling to visit a relative in Thornaby with her daughter, Terrilee Hope, when the accident occurred. She said a bus driver was the only person who helped them by calling 999 and talking to them in a calm and reassuring manner. She added: “He was really good. We’re grateful to him and emergency services but disgusted with the others. “I’m moritified by their actions and they should feel ashamed.”PC Paul Jackson, who has been dealing with the incident said he was dis-

appointed with the reac-tions of some people who had come out to see what happened.“The driver and her pas-senger were trapped in the car and calling for help.“Apparently a number of people decided to film or take photos on their mobile phones rather than offering assistance.“That is really disappoint-ing to hear,” he added. As well as crashing into the car, the tree brought down an electricity cable which led to the temporary loss of power to surrounding streets and the road was cordoned off until lunch-time. The number of people pausing to take photos of crash scenes instead of offering help is increasing and has lately become a significant problem. The incident at Ferryhill happened at a time when traffic officers have been warning motorists that they could face prosecution if caught taking pictures of crash scenes on the A1.

Conrad Morrison of Ferryhill Indoor Bowls Club will represent the County in the Under 15 regional finals.

Premier League heartbreak but Conrad to represent CountyAfter an encouraging start to the new year, Ferryhill were brought back down to earth with a bang with a 0-5 defeat by Durham in their rearranged Seniors Inter Club match. Having moved off the bottom of the league with their 5-0 win early this month, this defeat was an unwelcome setback. The score could easily have been better for Ferryhill, however, as with only four ends to play they were ahead on one rink and only three behind on another. Unfortunately, the home side were unable to capi-talise on this with both rinks losing shots in the run in. B Johnstone’s rink were unlucky to lose by three. After leading throughout they lost four shots at the last end. Ferryhill’s third rink were on the end of a severe drubbing as the away rink skipped by A Musgrove de-moralised them and spared no mercy. The home men were not allowed to score on a single end and lost by a big margin. The following day, Fer-ryhill bowlers R Laing, R Jefferson and J Hutchinson travelled to Darlington IBC to take part in round six of the new Premier League.Looking for a win to ensure a place in the play-offs they were within one bowl of doing so as the Gates-head skip’s last bowl of the day robbed the Ferryhill trio of victory. In a very close game, Fer-ryhill led from the fifth end but there was never more

than two shots between the sides and at the last end this was the case as Ferryhill were two in front. With all but the away skip’s last wood to play, Ferryhill were laid shot and at this stage had a place booked in the playoffs. However, lady luck was not on their side as the last bowl of the game deflected off a front wood, edged out the Ferryhill bowl and left Gateshead with three shots to win the match by one. This was heartbreak for the trio who had looked the winners from the start. Now, with one more fixture, the club need to win at Gateshead against local rivals Aycliffe to make it into the playoffs.

Final score: Ferryhill 13-14 Gateshead.Meanwhile, in better news, Conrad Morrison, who plays in league and competitive games at Ferryhill IBC is aiming to be the club’s next success story. He attended the County School of excellence held at Hartlepool IBC on January 9th.After completing the com-petitive games and set exercises, he repeated his feat of last year and emerged as top junior in the Under 15 age group. He now goes to the regional finals representing the County. “This is certainly a young man to watch in the future,” said a spokesperson.

Ferryhill u7s travelled to Darlington for a game against the Locomotives. Darlington opened the scoring but Ferryhill hit back with a goal from Zak Lauder. Ferryhill then took the lead through Jude Tracey, only to be pegged back them-selves. But it was Ferryhill who won the game when Max Wharrier struck the winner for a 3-2 final score. In the second game Darling-ton were the winners by 2-1, with Jude Tracey scoring Ferryhill’s consolation. The team would like to thank Andrew Heaviside who has left his role as coach for his hard work over the last two years.Ferryhill under 8’s played at home against a strong Leven team in an exciting contest which was goalless at half time. But the second half was Ferryhill’s and having taken the lead with their first attack after the break through Aaron F, they would

go on to win the game by 2-0 when George sealed the victory with a good finish. In the second game Ferry-hill sent out a completely different outfield line up.It was end to end stuff but they couldn’t prevent a the visitors winning 3-1 with Addison getting on the score sheet.U9s also travelled to Dar-lington to play tough oppo-sition in Darlington RA.A buoyant side made up of Dominic, Owen, Mason, Rio, Kyle, Kacie, Andrew and Maddox all had their part to play in securing a great 1-0 win.Ferryhill had to soak up a lot of early RA pressure before, sensing the home side’s frustration, they went on the attack themselves and, in the second half, forced the penalty that Rio con-verted to win the match. The win allowed the Fer-ryhill lads to express them-selves in the second game and cruise to a 3-0 win with goals from Maddox, Rio and Owen.

Town Youth news

Ferryhill Celtic travelled to Durham to take on Burnside WMC in the JD Taxis Cup Quarter Final only to find themselves 2-0 down before half time against their lower league opposition. In a hard fought game, the visitors clawed their way back into the tie with just 15 minutes remaining when

Shane Todd scored from a narrow angle to give Celtic some hope. But the home side were able to hold on to celebrate a shock win.Celtic’s next game will be another away cup match, in the Heart Foundation Cup against the Premier League’s Pelow Dogs. Kick off is 10.30am on Sunday 7th February.
