In late July, Evel Knievel’s hometown of Butteplays host to the world’s greatest celebration forthe world’s greatest daredevil.

Started in 2002, the three-day event draws thou-sands of visitors from all over the world to the MiningCity’s Uptown during the fourth weekend in July.

Spanky Spangler, Ryan Capes, Trigger Gumm andthe Kaptain himself, Robbie Knievel, have all performed headline stunts for EK Days, not to mention dozens of dazzling feats attempted by someof the country's greatest stuntmen and daredevils.

Before his death in 2007, Evel took the stage at theannual hoopla to welcome his fans, promote the event— of which he was very proud — and to thank all ofthe daring stuntmen who showed up to perform in honor of the festival’s namesake.

This year’s festival will not disappoint fans who have come to expect the best, with featured guests including Butte’s ownKeith Sayers, the king of freestyle motocross who leaves audi-ences in awe with his flying stunts. The cannon lady, JenniferSchneider, is back this year after amazing performances lastyear, as well as the World Famous Wallenda Skywalk, Acrodunkand the Wall of Death. Radical Rob the Dyno Maniac joins theshow this year, along with 50/50 BMX, Supermotocross, andGeoff Aaron’s extreme riding exhibition.

Keith Sayers is a nativeMontanan born and raised inButte, the hometown of Evel

Knievel.Sayers brings his freestyle show and

acrobatic excitement to Uptown Buttefor a crowd-pleasing event.

Those riders coming to Butte thisyear include Taka Higashino the 2012X-Games gold and silver medalist aswell as the 2010 X-Games silver medalist.

Also on the roster is Ted Culbertsona AFMXA champion; Nick Dunne,Kenny Bell and Billy Kohnut andHealth Frisby, also an X-Games goldmedalist.

Sayers has been riding motorcyclesfor most of his life. He bought his firstmotorcycle at the age of 9 from hisneighbor for $10 and from there it has been one epic ridefor this hard-working Rocky Mountain kid.

In 1995, at the age of 12, Keith started racing motocrosswhich led him to three Montana state motocross champi-onships. From there, Sayers put in the time to advancehimself in racing but found that Montana was a difficultarea to become noticed.

Finding new inspiration in 1997, Sayers started performing freestyle motocross demos during race inter-missions. It caught on quickly, and in 2002 at the Unleashthe Freaks tour, Sayers was introduced to Steve Millerfrom SCS Racing.

The following year, he did his first ever freestyle

motocross show in his home town and it seemed as if Keithhad what it takes to make it in FMX.

Then in 2004, Steve offered him an opportunity to comeover to Bozeman to start practicing at his facility. From thenon, Sayers has taken what he learned from Steve and decided to build his own custom facility in Butte for practice.

Sayers’ dedication to bring a practice facility to his backdoor has proved invaluable. He is committed to riding andtraining on his motorcycles every chance he gets.

The progression that Sayers has gone through thesepast few years is an inspiring story for a small town ruralFMXer. He began doing a wide variety of contests, demosand shows. His name has been listed among some of thebest and he has the great respect of his FMX brethren.

JenniferSchneider: Cannon Lady

Sailing 150 feet through the air — after being shotfrom a cannon — is a thrilling sight to see in UptownButte.

Returning this year to EK Days is JenniferSchneider, The Cannon Lady.

The act has been in her family since she was 15.Twenty years later, she has flown in front of thousandsof people in more than 10 countries.

Schneider is launched out of a 28-foot long cannonwith a force of 9 g’s.

The secret of the operation is just that, a secret thatSchneider’s dad perfected.

“The launch isn’t bad, but the landing in the net canbe dangerous if it’s not accurate or the wind is blowing,” Schneider said.

At the height of her trajectory, Schneider is about150 feet off the ground, traveling about a half-block.

The fun of the event is that the crowd can remainfairly closet to the cannon and net on Butte’s narrowstreets. So the blast is “in your face” in a way.

Not to be outdone, her husband, “Radical Rob” willalso have an explosive show.

“He puts himself in a box of explosives and, yes,blows himself up,” she said.

The result is a huge fireball, and has not been seenin Butte before.

The human cannon act began as early as the 1800sas a feature in circus acts everywhere.

Jennifer’s father, David Smith, built his first cannonmore than 20 years ago and his entire family hastaken part in three similar acts like this one.

Schneider and her husband, who mans the cannon,are currently in Rhode Island doing a show and will bedriving to Butte to arrive just in time for Evel Days.

Highwire actWorld famous Rick Wallenda to skywalk over ButteBY GERARD O’BRIEN

In celebration of Nik Wallenda’s famous high wire walk acrossNiagara Falls, his second cousin, Rick Wallenda will walkacross Uptown Butte from building top to building top for Evel

Knievel Days.Rick is part of the Wallenda family that now has five separate

troupes conducting high wire acts around the world.He’ll perform his high wire act three times a day throughout

the Evel Knievel Days celebration, July 26-28 in Uptown Butte.All events are free.

“My family knew Mr. Knievel very well,” Wallenda told TheStandard from his Sarasota, Fla., offices. “I’ll be in Butte in twoweeks to see where the best place is to put the high wire up,” hesaid. “Depending on the weather, I’ll not only walk from rooftop torooftop, but may stand on my head on the wire. No teather, nonet.”

Wallenda, 39, said he’s been on a high wire ever since he couldremember. He turned professional at 13.

“I don’t remember learning it, but we had high wires in ourbackyard as other people had swing sets.”

His mother, Carla, is still doing high wire acts at age 76.The Wallendas have a long history with Butte daredevil Evel

Knievel, as well.“We were there as a warm-up act for the (ill-fated) Snake River

jump,” he said.“When Evel broke a world record jump at King’s Island outside

of Cincinnati, my grandfather set a distance world record of 1,800feet there,” he said.

Likewise, Wallenda broke his grandfather’s record in 2008 witha distance of 2,000 feet just after Robbie “Kaptain” Knievel brokehis dad’s record for a motorcycle jump at King’s Island.

The troupe is well-known for its death-defying pyramid with theyoungest girl in history to present the fabled chair balance.However, that won’t be on the card this time.

Rick Wallenda, is eldest grandson of founders, Karl and HelenWallenda.

Wallenda has performed on three continents during his career,and on more than one occasion participated in a recreation of thegigantic seven-person-pyramid.

As the patriarch, he leads this troupe to each destination as hisgrandfather once led the original group.

Supermoto racing

Supermoto racing returns to the Mining City as part ofEvel Knievel Days, July 26-28.Lee Collins, the operator of the event and track, says

Supermoto is a combination of street bike and dirt bike racing.

Everyone from small 50cc bikes on up can have a chanceto race on the track; even four-wheelers. There will be pro-circuit races as well.

“It’s a ratio of 70 percent street racing and 30 percentmotorcross, with jumps and hills and dirt racing,” saidCollins of WHR motorsports racing in Seattle.

This is the fourth year for supermoto cross. Riders fromall over the Northwest and Canada will participate over thethree-day event.

“It’s sort of a grand prix of racing, and is open to the localkid who wants to try it on up to the 450cc bikes,” Collinssaid; though there is no limit in bike size. Even small mini-bikes are welcome.

Racers can reach 100 mph, but for the Uptown, the speedis limited to 60 mph.

The course runs from the Belmont Mine yard on Mercuryon up to the Lexington Gardens, a great place for viewingthe racers.

“The WHR crew is amped up to make the track even better than years before,” said Collins. “This year we will berunning the track in the opposite direction and since the“urban crossover” was such a big hit we are bringing it backagain this year.”

There is $5,000 prize money for the professional racers.Also, there is a costume race, where racers will dress up

in funny garb and the onlookers will vote for the best orworst-dressed.

The event is easy to watch and a good one to take in during the break in the other performances.

Geoff AaronExtreme trials: The sport of mountain goats

Geoff Aaron’s motor trials are sure to please the crowdwith his abilities to balance on a motorcycle, while descending stairs.

Aaron, 39, has been ridingsince 1985 in “the sport of mountain goats” competing overrugged terrain and racingagainst others.

“It’s a combination of flatlandracing and pure BMX off-road biking,” he said.

Aaron is a 10-time U.S. champin the sport. Now, he operatesExtreme Riding Entertainmentbased in Denver, Colo., whichdemonstrates what “mountaingoat” riding is on a smaller stage.

“We have a semi truck thatopens up and reveals a smallobstacle course that the crowdcan stand and watch us negotiate tight turns, climb apyramid and other tricks in asmall space.

This is the fourth year Aaronwill be at Evel Knievel Days andhe’ll be performing throughoutthe three-day event. “There areonly about five guys in the U.S. who can do these tricks,” hesaid.

His specially built bike is called a Gasgas from Spain.The show is a mixture of stunts, information and

clowning around.

Freestyle street bikesdisplay unique stunts

S&S Stunting of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, will thrill crowdsat EK Days with burnouts, flames and motorcycle acrobatics. Street bike freestyle has been around for a

number of years, but Shaun Ogilvie and Shawn Westgate willbring a Canadian version of the sport to Butte.

Ogilvie, 33, is a worldclass rider who will be doing technicalwheelies, front stops and screeching tire burnouts. He’s been riding professionally for about 12 years.

“It’s all done on lightly modified street bikes,” he said. Hisgroup uses Kawasakis.

“We were pretty much pioneers of the sport in Canada. Wehaven’t been in Butte before so we’re pretty excited to show thecrowds what we can do.”

The three-man team will block off an Uptown street through-out the three-day event to strut their stuff.

“There’ll be some high-speed riding, low-speed technical stuntsand lots of fun,” Ogilvie said. “But it is all done with safety inmind.”

“We specialize in unique half-time thrill acts. We have beenperforming, professionally, longer than any other motorcyclefreestyle display team in our country. We promote professional-ism and safe riding.”

perennial favorite of Evel Knievel Daysin Butte is the Wall of Death motordrome performance.

That’s where man and machine take on cen-trifugal force to ride perpendicular against gravi-ty’s pull.

In the style of past circus thrill shows, thewooden, 14-foot deep circular structure holds upto 200 spectators on the top looking down at theriders below. It puts the spectators inches awayfrom the riders at times.

The show is an authentic slice of baseball andapple-pie Americana. The first motor dromesappeared in the United States in the early 1900smaking the Wall of Death show America’ OriginalExtreme Motorcycle Thrillshow.

Charlie “Ransom” (no last name) says thatButte is one of the most popular venues for the performance.

“Jay ‘Lightnin’ ’ of Santa Clara, Calif,. built the struc-ture about 10 years ago to display his specially built,vintage motorcycles. This show has been done the sameway since the eary 1920s,” Ransom said.

Of note are the vintage motorcycles, especially theIndian Scout from the 1920s.

“You can’t wear out an Indian Scout,” the motto goes.“A Scout is very well balanced, low center of gravity

which makes it ideal for the motor drome,” said Ransom.Also the group uses Harley Davidson bikes from 1975

and go-carts in the show. And they have a 1940 HarleyHummer on display.

This summer, the Butte Exchange Club, in partnershipwith the Colonial Flag Foundation, will again host the“Field of Honor” flag display on the field at

Continental and Mercury.Volunteers will post 1,003 U.S. flags, size 3-feet by 5-feet,

atop eight-foot poles, beginning Thursday, July 26, and ending Sunday, July 29. The display is free to the public.

The Field of Honor program is a nonprofit, non-political,and non-partisan community fundraiser for local charitiesand causes.

Selected as this year’s beneficiaries are Big Brothers BigSisters, Butte Rescue Mission, United Veterans Council, BigSky Honor Flight, Intermountain Children’s Home (Buttebranch), Butte-Silver Bow Family Drug Court, Butte Cares

and the Butte YMCA.Flags will honor serving military, veterans, those killed in

defense of our nation, first responders, law enforcement offi-cers, personal heroes, and the victims of child abuse inMontana. Sponsored flags can be dedicated to individuals.

Flags in the display may be sponsored for $35 each or $30for two or more. Sponsors can purchase the flags for $20more per flag.

“The only funny thing about Butte is there is really no levelspot, so we have to adjust,” said Ransom, who’s father is origi-nally from Montana, and remarked that he first met hisgrandfather years ago in Butte.

“The Butte audience has been really cool with us for thelast eight years. Kids that were in strollers those first yearsare coming up to us on bikes now,” he said.

The event is dedicated to the memory of SamanthaMorgan, who was one of the original organizers of the show.

Ever since Tim Montanawas a young man growingup in Butte he’s been

breaking the rules.His latest album, “Tim

Montana and His Shrednecks,”displays a brand of country with such a rough and dirty edge that folks in the music industry arefinding it hard to define.

“So far there’s a buzz of excitement about it (the new record),because no one’s heard anything like it. They don’t know what to dowith it,” Montana told The Montana Standard during a recent phoneinterview from Nashville.

Montana and his band will play the Friday night closer in UptownButte.

He describes his music as mix of outlaw country, rock and roll andgrunge. One of his contemporaries described the sound as “mountainmetal.”

Renowned country songwriter Kostas came up with the term“shredneck” to describe the band’s sound, according to Montana.

The name stuck.Montana decided to not just be a name, but to go into this next

project with a band. This latest album has 10 orginal songs which theystarted recording in March.

The record features legendary guest musicians Paul Shaffer fromThe Late Show with David Letterman and guitarist Steve Cropperfrom the Blues Brothers Band. (Montana performed live on theLetterman show in 2008.)

Montana recalls calling Shaffer when they were recording in NewYork City and asking him if he would play on one of the tracks.Shaffer told him to bring recording equipment to his apartment.

“He pulled out an organ that he said he bought from James Brown,and I said, ‘that’ll work,’” Montana said.

Montana said he does all the guitar work on this album. He usedsome session musicians on his first two releases.

He particularly likes the song “Weight in Gold,” which he wroteabout legendary Montana sheriff and outlaw Henry Plummer, who washanged by the Vigilantes in Bannack in 1864.

When not recording, Tim Montana and his Shrednecks have beenplaying steady gigs at Nashville’s famous 12th & Porter. Cropper evenjoined the band on stage to jam on the new songs.

“We’ve been packing it out everytime we play it,” Montana said.The opening bands for Tim Montana is Shellshock Lullaby and

Miles Crossing.

MonetaMoneta, an original rock band from Seattle,

will play at EK Days as the closer band onThursday night, July 26.

The band’s drummer, Leo Martin, is a Buttenative.

Since the band’s founding in 2007, Monetahas wasted little time getting its name out toits fans. With two independently released CDsin 2007 (“The Hope EP”) and 2008 (“Heroes”),and numerous regional shows with high profilebands such as Smashing Pumpkins, the band issetting its sights high.

motorcycle and guts to an unparalleled level of worldwide glory and

fame, as King of the Daredevils, The Last of the Gladiators, The

Godfather of Extreme Sports, Guinness Book of Records holder for

the most bones broken, an unwavering optimist, a doer, a go-get-

ter, self-promoter extraordinaire, media genius, an enigmatic folk

hero — an American legend.

Knievel’s nationally televised motorcycle jumps, including his

1974 attempt to jump Snake River Canyon at Twin Falls, Idaho,

represent four of the twenty most-watched, including the No.1

spot, ABC’s Wide World of Sports events in history. His achieve-

ments and failures, including his record 35 broken bones, earned

him several entries in the Guinness Book of World Records. These

are the titles by which millions of people around the world know

Evel Knievel.
