Difference with 1x Reference NetworkDifference with 1x Reference Network

1xEV-DO is data only, so no interface to MSC/HLRThe Packet Data Domain

equipment ( PDSN 、 AAA 、 HA ) is same as 1X Independent Access network AAA server Two A interfaces added:- A12 for access system authentication- A13 for AT roaming Home AN and Foreign AN interaction

A1 / A2 InterfaceA1 / A2 Interface

A1 The A1 interface carries signaling information between BSC and MSC, including signaling messages related with call processing, mobility management, radio resource management, authentication and encryption.

A2 The A2 interface mainly carries 64/56K PCM information between BSS side and MSC side.

Page 7: EVDO Service Flow

A3/A7 InterfaceA3/A7 Interface

A3 interface is used to support the soft handoff (BSCs are interconnected) between BSSs when the MS is in the traffic channel status. A3 interface is divided into two parts: A3 signaling interface and A3 traffic interface.

A7 interface is used to support the handoff between BSSs when the MS is not yet under the control of traffic channel status, and support the control stream when the MS undergoes soft handoff between BSSs and new service needs to be established.

A8/A9, A10/A11, A12 and A13 InterfacesA8/A9, A10/A11, A12 and A13 Interfaces

A8/A9 interface is adopted to carry user data and signaling respectively between BSC and PCF.

A10/A11 interface is adopted to carry data transmission and signaling respectively between PCF and PDSN.

A12 interface carries signaling information of access authentication (only include 3 messages: access request, accept, reject). A13 interface exchanges signaling when AT is roaming between source AN and target AN.

Any normal service flow must contain the following courses according to the certain order;

Set up and configure session environment;

Set up air interface connection;

Set up A12 access authentication

set up A8/A9 link;

set up A10/A11 link;

Session- Shared state between the access terminal and the access network

- This shared state stores the protocols and protocol configuration attributes that were negotiated and is used for communications between the access terminal and the access network;

- Information : A unicast address (UATI) that is assigned to the access terminal, the set of protocol configuration attributes is used by the access terminal and the access network to communicate over the air-link, etc

- When the value of protocol configuration attributes is changed, Session negotiation is performed between the access terminal and the access network. An access terminal cannot communicate with an access network without having an open session.

UATI (Unicast Access Terminal Identifier)

- A universally unique address that is assigned to each access terminal in a subnet

- As the 128-bit address is assigned but never required to be sent on the access channel, the access network can always send the short (32 bits) version of the UATI

Session SetupSession Setup

UATI Assignment Procedure This procedure is initiated when the

AT receives the Session Close message from AN or transmits the Session Close message to AN

This procedure is initiated when the AT detects a change of Subnet after moving the Subnet boundaries

Session Negotiation Procedure It is initiated that an AT doesn’t have a

session that acquired from session configuration protocol with AN.

It is initiated that an user request connection setup for packet data service in a subnet that the value of configuration attributes has been changed because an AT crosses a subnet or an user changes the value of that.

Connection Setup Procedure

This figure illustrates the

process of opening a

connection between the

access terminal and the

access network

Connection procedure is

always performed at the

initiative of the AT sending a

ConnectionRequest and

RouteUpdate message

1. AT negotiates about PPP and LCP with AN;2. AN sends random number which will be generated by itself to AT;3. AT makes a response to AN by sending itself’s NAI and related information4. AN constructs A12 access request information and send it to AN AAA;5. AN AAA makes a judge and responds to AN by sending A12 access

accept information with AT’s IMSI ;6. AN sends successful information of authentication to AT。
