July 1992Dear Friends,Whew ... WE MADE IT I say wemade i t because I could n o t havemade it without you being rightt h e r e with me. Your commi tmentto me and my work has been atremendous blessing. I have beenencouraged so much because ofyour caring support. So thanks toyou, your many prayers, and yourfinancial commitment, I ampleased to say that WE made itthrough school year 1.Just what is it like teaching at th eC e n t r a l J a v a I n t e r M i s s i o nSchool? Well, after 10 months ofserving in a foreign culture andclimate setting I am getting quiteused to the unusual. But perhapsthe following descriptions mighthelp acquaint you with some of myroutine challenges andexperiences.... Waking up to a refreshing coldmandi bath . To ba the I steuidnext to a bak (a large concrete box)filled with cold water. Using adipper, I splash and pour th ewater over my body. On coolmornings, I have to ge t psyched upfor that first dipper full. At leas t Inever steam up the bathroomm i r r o r .... Carrying two and a-halfquartsof water to school every day. Allta p water must be purified, thuswe have no drinking fountains atCJIMS. I will drink two quarts ofwater on the days that I teach twoP.E. classes. And if I stay aftrschool to work, I will drink the jugdry.... Walking slowly to school.Walking quickly results in adripping sweat. But why hurry

    December 1992

Dear Friends,Greetings from Indonesia It shard to beUeve t ha t the schoolyear here a t the Central JavaInter-Mission School (CJIMS)is about one-third of th e wayfinished. We opened our doorsto begin the 1992-93 schoolyear on August 26. Once thefirst bell rang, t ime began toaccelerate and I grabbed on.Now th e pace has slowed downenough that I can actuallyspend some time composing aquaUty newsletter. So here itcomes, and thanks for waitingA NEW YEAR AT CJIMSThe CJIMS population hasgrown to a record enrollment of125 students . The majority ofthem are missionary kids, butwe do serve quite a large groupof business families, too. Ourstudents represent 12 differentnations from Europe, Asia,Austraha, and North America. To meet the needs o f o u rgrowing population, severalconstruction projects werecompleted during the summerbre^. Anew dormitorywasbuilt to house 16 junior highand high school girls; it iscompletely full. Our threed orms n ow house a combinedt ota l o f 4 2 s tudents .

CJIMS also bui l t aregulation-size basketball courtnext to the elementary school. Not only is it used fo r ourphysical education classes andafler-school play, but ou r HighSchool Basketbal l Clubpractices there. They plan tohost some of the loc^Indonesian high school teamsin some tournament games thisyear. The new court can also beused for tennis and volleyball.

actually have operating waterfaucets and ga s fixtures. Labt imes a re so much e a si er toperform now. Also, it s good tosee the students using thosesinks for something other thanan out-of-the-way place to putthe i r books.I am also quite excited aboutmy teaching schedule this year.Last year I was kind of a Jack-of-al l - t rades in t h a t Itaught math, ~ I science, socialstudies, andphysical

I teach general science togrades seven, eight, and nine;and my tenth graders studybiology. In early October I took my 11biology students to thesou the rn coa st o f t h e i s land fora marine biology field trip. Thestudents spent part ofthe daycombing the beaches for shellst o i nc l ude in the i r seashe l lcollections. We also examined alot of interesting marine lifewhile watching fishermen froma small village unload theirnets. Not only did we get to se evarious t T es of fish, crabs, andlobsters, but their catches alsocontained an octopus, a big seaturtle, and two four-foot-longsharks

Though I have spoken in amost positive manner aboutthis new school year, I mustadmi t t ha t i t h as n ot beenentirely rosy. For th e first fiveweeks of school I was teachinga math class in addition to mycur rent load. At first i t did no tseem like having that additional class was going to be much ofa problem. In a couple of days Ifound out quite differently: Ibegan spending over 12 hours aday at the school trying to keepup with all ofmy teachingresponsibilities. When I finally realized that myr id icu lous work s rhpHnlp wasnot going to slow down, I caUedupon th e Lord as well as theCJIMS headmaster. They wereable to find a very qualified andwilling teacher to relieve me ofmy math class. I am now backto my usual energetic teachingand having fun at it .Even though you were notmade aware of this particularsituation, I am confident thatyour many prayers coupledwit h t he watchful care of ourloving God susta ined methroughout tha t difficult andfrustrating time. Thank you forcontinuing to remember me asI serve here in Indones ia .

This newcongregation meets at theTheological School (STJKI) inSalatiga.I am excited to be a part of thisnew ou tr each to the Indonesiancommunity. ACC is imique inthat we are reaching out tobilingual Indonesians whodesire to fellowship with nativeEnglish speakers. Many of theyounger Indonesian adults se efluency in English as a key tolaunching a successful career. To improve their pronunciationthey will seek out nativeEnglish speakers to practicethe i r conversa t ion .

Our praise time isa mixture of English andIndonesian songs and thesermon is in English.Afterwards , we break intothree groups to discuss these rmon in more detai l . Onegroup discusses th e sermon inBahasa Indones ia . Ou r secondgroup allows the participants to^alogue in either language. And the third group, which Ilead, is done in English. We recently held a FriendshipFriday party that consisted ofgames, worship, fellowship, and, of course, l ot s o f food Twovan l oa ds c ame t ha t werepacked with universitystudents. Sixty people attendedand had a great time. We hopeand pray that ACC can beinstrumental in harvestingsouls for the Kingdom ofHeaven by providing ameaningful worship experiencecoupled with fellowship in th eEnghsh language.UPDATESMy roommate, Maryono, had avery busy summer travelingback and f or th t o Jaka r t a inorder to process visa papers fornew CJIMS teachers, whienschool started, he decided toleave his position as an officeworker for CJIMS.
