EVALUATION 3: What type of institution might distribute your media product?

Our production company name:

When creating our company we decided to use the production name ‘GPM Productions.’ This is a combination of the initials of all the company owners; James Ginn, Sophie Perry and Lydia McCarthy. This is not only an inclusive name which givens competing brands a idea about GPM

Productions but its also an original and short brand name that’s catchy and fits the stereotype of a typical Thriller brand. We also believed that the brand name of our thriller would work well in parallel to a larger production company such a universal or warner.

What does a production company do?

Production companies are the main source of finance for the making of films. If they find a film that they believe will be profitable for their company they will offer them a deal in which the their company is either paid an initial fee or they take money depending on how much the film makes. They then ensure that all aspects of the film are perfect before the release and they help with the promotion of the film.

Funding:

As we are a new company and this was our first release, we decided that we would ask for financial help from the brand KickStarter.

They are a brand that Specialises in helping new and developing companies to produce their films. They have been involved in some of the most prestigious film productions such as ‘Project Eternity’ and ‘Mighty No. 9’ They use donations from the public that want to help

new and upcoming companies whilst giving them a percentage of your films profit depending on how much money they invest.

Distributor:

Distributers are larger scale companies that help you release your film into the cinemas and act as an advertiser. We decided to use universal as their usual high budget thriller films fitted our genre of horror movie whilst also being a highly prestigious and professional brand. This therefore meant that their company got a new film and product that fits their style of film and GPM Products can use their popularity as a type of promotion.

Behind the titles:

There's are a number of positional roles that are mentioned throughout the ‘Extinct’ title sequence.

One of these roles is ‘Costume designer.’ A GPM Production employee collected the military style costume and decided that the use of the dog tags will quickly inform the audience of this mans previous life.

Another role that is mentioned during the titles in ‘Props designer’ This role was allocated and the person ensured to make the thriller look as realistic and natural as possible by bringing in recognisable props.

The stereotypical titles where also allocated, for example we included directors and producers. These where all used discreetly as a way of fitting the stereotypes of a thriller.

Universals releases

THE BOY NEXT DOOR: This modern thriller has been recently released with the prestigious actress Jennifer Lopez. Her character becomes stalked by her next door neighbour. This fits with our psychological thriller and the film explores the lonely journey of the protagonist.

SALT: This 2010 American action thriller stars Angelina Jolie as a spy agent who Plays a CIA agent on the run after being accused

of being a Russian spy. This connects Extinct fast paced action and physiological thriller.

Titles:

At the beginning of our thriller it starts with the production company ‘Universal.’ This immediately informs the view of the style of thriller that this will be a creates a familiarity between the viewer and Universal as their prestige within the oligopoly (3 main media companies) means that they are a recognisable household name.

Its then followed by our production company ‘GPM Productions’

A Similar film: We based out thriller loosely on the character played by Will Smith in the Warner film ‘I am legend.’ He is also a young lonely man trying to survive and find civilisation within the post apocalypse world.

We use a similar costume for our protagonist character as dark colours fit the stereotypes of a thriller and the green jacket also suggests some sort of military background. This film was also

awarded a age rating of 15 as its physiological and graphical content would be harming to a younger audience.

The setting of our thriller ‘Extinct’ is also set in a previously busy city/town which now has been eerily emptied.

Film hosting websites such as Netflix would be interested in this production as it would appeal to a large amount of their audience as thrillers are popular with both teenagers and also older generations who have been brought up with thriller films.

Also due to our brand being new out and unpopular, Netflix or any other film hosting website could possibly negotiate an exclusivity with GPM Productions to ensure that they get the first release of our thriller films.
