In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts Conventions Used: My placement of the tagline, Title and billing block/date is very conventional after looking at other real media texts such as The Tall Man and Blair Witch Project, I realised that I had to repeat the same kind of style on my project. Using a long medium shot of the character of Marcus to not just show the character but also to show the surrounding area to make sure the viewer knows where the film is set, this can be seen in the Woman in black poster to the right. Conventions Developed: Most media product would have their USP as a Actor/ress because they’re the star or because they’re well known and can bring in more interest for the product but I used a taglines which doesn’t challenge the norm because not every media project has a Actor’s name as their USP for example Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, with the “The Rebellion Begins”. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts

Conventions Used:My placement of the tagline, Title and billing block/date is very conventional after looking at other real media texts such as The Tall Man and Blair Witch Project, I realised that I had to repeat the same kind of style on my project. Using a long medium shot of the character of Marcus to not just show the character but also to show the surrounding area to make sure the viewer knows where the film is set, this can be seen in the Woman in black poster to the right.

Conventions Developed:Most media product would have their USP as a Actor/ress because they’re the star or because they’re well known and can bring in more interest for the product but I used a taglines which doesn’t challenge the norm because not every media project has a Actor’s name as their USP for example Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, with the “The Rebellion Begins”.

Conventions Challenged: The colour scheme for the date as normally it would be just one colour whereas I have made it two this is to highlight the fact that there is a link between the date and the history behind our trailer. The editing on the face normally it would be make up that would change a actor’s appearance but I had to change it myself in photoshop which see unconventional. The billing blocks shape and size challenges the codes and conventions because I had such a long image and wanted to keep the whole image so having the billing block size works and you’re able to see the writing of the billing block without needing it to be magnified.

Conventions Used:I used a conventional layout as it’s a grid structure with alternating colours scheme like the Sight and Sound magazine this creates a good contrast between each sell line. My masthead is also a conventional as it crosses the whole page to show it’s dominance over the page an example of the real media text would be Empire magazine but I also wanted a the splash to be a large size as well because the splash is the part that will attract the readers as my magazine isn’t know world wide, this is also seen in the issue of Sight and Sound above.

Conventions Developed: A conventions I develop was the masthead colour scheme as some of the time is all one colour for example Empire but real media text like Sight and Sound where apart of it is a different colour this adds contrast to the masthead and this makes the masthead stand out from the page, I came up with the masthead Key Grip after searching on the internet for members of a film crew as I thought it would have a good connection to film and I saw Key Grip which is an important roll within a crew. I thought it would be clever as it is relatable to real media through the member of key grip. Same with the splash as it has a opaque background with is as you see similar to the Sight and Sound magazine but it isn’t conventional.

Conventions Challenged: The main image is unconventional as it places the actress within the set but she’s not playing her character, I want this feeling because it sets the setting for the film and it also creates the same kind of creepiness as in the trailer but with the contrast of the actress’s attitude I believe it works well even though it isn’t conventional. The special edition is a unconventional thing to do for a media project as they are normally just regular editions and because I made it a special edition this meant I had to add a new colour to the colour scheme .

Film Magazine

Conventions Used:Iconic scream with the ending to leave the audience on edge and to create a code of enigma whether she’ll be ok. Also at the end of the trailer is the Billing block and the release date which is conventional for most not if all real media texts have this feature at the end because they have to tell people when their film will be coming out or otherwise they won’t get any of their target audience. There are intertitle throughout the trailer like most trailer but our intertitle you could say are mostly related to the Evil dead trailer and the some of the narrative could be relate it to the Evil dead trailer as we incorporated some of the ideas into our own. We went for a conventional ‘Cabin in the Woods’ kind of theme as it’s a norm for most cheap horror/thriller trailers for example ‘Blair Witch Project’. The beating of the drums in the soundtrack is a code and conventional we used to create a tense atmosphere and also the change of pace when the break of equilibrium occurs this emphasizes the break and also makes the trailer more exciting. And we don’t show the fixing of the equilibrium as that normally spoils the ending of the films because at the end a most films everything is restored. Fast paced editing is common in most film trailers apart from Rom-coms , This was matched by the soundtrack which was synced nicely and them both keep the viewer interested.

Conventions Developed:Lot’s of our conventions we got from the evil dead trailer we just adapted to make our trailer more professional as it has some ideas from real media texts. We developed all of it really because most of the real media texts we looked at we adapter their ideas to fit our plot for example he whispering “you have to get out of her NOW!” this is similar to the new Evil dead trailer when she’s in the cabin “ Get me out of here” We also developed upon is the book and how like the evil dead it creates a kind of curse but more of a possession the individual reading it. So Sam become our victim and our villain as Propp would say. Propp’s theory of character structure and Levi-Strauss and Binary Opposites because normally the victim falls prey of the Villain but in this case the victim (the person who is possessed) is killing everyone so she becomes the Villain too. The running scene which is are too see because it’s too fast paced, it’s between the shots of Marcus (Josh) and Ben (Ethan) collide.

Film Trailer

Conventions Challenged: We created three intertitle at the start of this trailer which tells us the history behind the story. Also the whispering we cut away from the character talking this isn’t conventional as most people keep on the character to see the facial expression of the characters, where we didn’t want to keep on the two characters in the tent because we wanted to get the change close up of the character because we wanted to create the idea of celebrating the possession like the monks would have as. The monks challenge the conventions mostly because they aren’t all the way through the trailer so it’s hard to realise what they are and why they’re there, where as real film trailers would show the history a bit more .

Evil dead - Whispering in the cabin

Blair Witch Project - Close up of one of the characters

My trailer is above.
