Target audience

• CABINET IS A MAGAZINE TARGETTING ITSELF AT THE 16-24 AGE RANGE, BUDDING AND CURRENT DJ’S, AND PEOPLE WITHIN THE INDIE SOCIAL GROUP.

• ITHIS IS A FAKE FACEBOOK TIMELINE I MADE TO DEMONSTRATE THE SORT OF PERSON WHO WOULD READ ‘CABINET’.

WHAT ATTRACTS IT TO 16-24 YEAR OLDS?

• FIRSTLY, THE ONLINE PRESENCE. CABINET IS A MAGAZINE THAT HAS A STRONG ONLINE BASE, AND THIS SHOULD BE SOMETHING THAT APPEALS TO THE AGE GROUP AS THESE PEOPLE KNOW THE MOST ABOUT THE SOCIAL MEDIA OUTLETS CABINET EXISTS ON AND ARE THE BIGGEST USERS.• IT IS A MAGAZINE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE – WITH

YOUNG PEOPLE! THE COVER MODEL OLLIE K IS SOMEONE WHO IDOLISES THIS AGE GROUP WITH HIS HUMOUR, FASHION AND

TO ADD TO THE POINT ABOUT SOCIAL MEDIA, THE CONTENTS PAGE IS DELIBARATELY LAID OUT LIKE A TUMBLR DASHBOARD, WITH PICTURES IN A GRID FORMAT AND (PAGE) NUMBERS OVERLAYING THEM. YOUNG PEOPLE SHOULD RECOGNIZE THIS ICONIC CONVENTION AND THEREFORE THE MAGAZINE SHOULD APPEAL TO THEM.I FURTHERED THE TECHNOLOGICAL THEME THROUGHOUT IN MY HOUSE STYLE, WITH THE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD TAKING A TECHNOLOGICAL LOOK TO IT ALSO. AGAIN MAKING IT APPEALING TO YOUNG PEOPLE WHO RECOGNIZE AND ARE IN TOUCH WITH THESE SORTS OF CONVENTIONS.

WHAT ATTRACTS IT TO 16-24 YEAR OLDS?

• I ALSO USED PHOTO MANIPULATION IN THE MAGAZINES PHOTOGRAPHY TO ENTICE PEOPLE IN THIS AUDIENCE. THE EFFECTS I GAVE A LOT OF THE PHOTO’S, PARTICULARLY ON THE CONTENTS PAGE, HAVE AN EDITED VINTAGE LOOK ABOUT THEM. THIS IS AN EFFECT THAT IS VERY POPULAR WITH YOUNG PEOPLE AT THE MOMENT AND SO THEY SHOULD SEE THIS AS AN ATTRACTIVE POINT TO THE MAGAZINE.

WHAT ATTRACTS IT TO DJ’S/BUDDING DJ’S?

• FIRSTLY IT’S A DANCE MUSIC MAGAZINE!!! HOWEVER THERE IS A DANGER THAT THIS WOULD NOT COME ACROSS ON FIRST GLANCE! SO I HAD TO DO A LOT TO ENSURE THIS DIDN’T HAPPEN.

• IN PARTS LIKE THE DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD I USED LANGUAGE ASSOCIATED WITH DJ’ING AND PRODUCING MUSIC THAT WOULD ACT AS RECOGNISABLE TO POTENTIAL DJ AUDIENCES. WORDS LIKE ‘FRUITY LOOPS’ (A MUSIC PRODUCING SOFTWARE) AND MENTION OF TOP DANCE CLUB ‘BOILER ROOM’ SHOULD ENSURE THAT ‘CABINET’ IS ON THE SAME LEVEL AS IT’S READERS.

WHAT ATTRACTS IT TO DJ’S/BUDDING DJ’S?

• I CAREFULLY CHOSE MY FONTS TO SUIT THE DJ AUDIENCE. THE FONTS FOUND IN THE MAGAZINE (PARTICULARLY ON THE FRONT COVER) ARE VERY ROBOTIC IN DESIGN AND THEREFORE LOOK TECHNOLOGICAL. BEING A GENRE WITH IT’S PRINCIPLES IN TECHNOLOGY THIS DESIGN OF FONT SHOULD HELP APPEAL TO THE DJ AUDIENCE. FOR MY MASTHEAD I USED ‘LOADED’ AND I USED THE FONT ‘ALIEN ENCOUNTERS’ ON THE FRONT PAGE – BOTH OF WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON DAFONT.

WHAT ATTRACTS IT TO DJ’S/BUDDING DJ’S?

• ON MY CONTENTS PAGE I ALSO HAD A SUBSCRIPTION OFFER OFFERING PEOPLE WHO SUBSCRIBE TO ‘CABINET’ THE CHANCE TO GET SOME EXPENSIVE DJ SOFTWARE (TRAKTOR) FREE. THIS WILL APPEAL TO DJ’S ESPECIALLY THOSE BUDDING ONES BECAUSE IT IS AN OFFER THAT WOULD BE VERY EXCITING TO THEM.

• ALSO ON MY CONTENTS PAGE I USED THE ICONIC IMAGE TO DJ’S OR ANY MUSIC FAN OF A HEADPHONE JACK IN PLACE OF A BULLET POINT.

• ORIGINALLY I PLANNED TO USE THE ALSO ICONIC IMAGE OF VINYL TO REPLACE OLLIE’S PUPILS IN HIS EYES – THOUGH THIS DIDN’T LOOK GREAT SO I CHANGED IT.

• I ENSURED THAT OLLIE WOULD BE LOOKING AT THE CAMERA FOR THE PHOTOGRAPH ON MY FRONT COVER. THE EYE CONTACT FROM THIS WOULD BE REALLY USEFUL IN DRAWING ANY AUDIENCE IN.

• BUT HOW DOES THE PHOTOGRAPHY APPEAL TO MY SPECIFIC AUDIENCES?

• I TOOK A LOT OF PHOTO’S ON THE DAY AND THAT MEANT A LOT OF SEPERATING THE WHEAT FROM THE CHAFF.

Why would the photo’s I used be better than other photo’s I took?

• PHOTO 1 IS NOT AS GOOD AS PHOTO 2 (THE ONE I USED FOR MY FRONT COVER).

• I FEEL PHOTO 2 IS BETTER FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS. FIRSTLY, OLLIE IS MAKING EYE CONTACT, WHICH ACTS AS A PULL FACTOR TO THE AUDIENCE. I FEEL PHOTO 1 DOES NOT SUIT THE GENRE EITHER, AND OLLIE’S POSE IS RESONANT OF A MORE POPPY GENRE – AS THOUGH HE IS LIKE JUSTIN BIEBER.

• ALSO, I DELIBERATELY SET UP THE IMAGE FROM MY ORIGINAL FLAT PLANS. THE WIPING NOSE ACTION HAS CONNOTATIONS OF DRUGS AND THE CROSS ON HIS HAND HAS CONNOTATIONS OF REFORM.
