WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR AUDIENCE

FEEDBACK?

Page 2: Evaluation

PEER FEEDBACK• Peer feedback is particularly useful because my peers know about the conventions of a music video.•My peers were able to give feedback on the micro-elements because they have specific knowledge about media and media products.

CHANGES I MADEI made 2 main changes following the feedback I received about my music video.

I changed the font used for the title of song to the same font as I used in my digipak and advert as this would create more of a connection between the video and ancillary products.

I changed the colourisation to make the colours less bright so they fit better with the genre.

FOCUS GROUP• The focus group was useful because it was helpful to get

feedback from people who don’t have a media background as they aren’t concerned with codes and conventions and instead are judging based on existing media products.

• This would mean that their feedback would be based on how they perceived the text, which is likely to be different to how someone studying media would perceive it (Stuart Hall’s Reception Theory).

• In addition, they may have more expertise about a particular genre so would know what the fans of this genre would want from their media products.

DIFFERENT READINGS• While all the people I gained feedback from were given the same text (or

similar) to give feedback on, there was a range of different aspects that people gave feedback on.

• This is because the audience’s perception is a negotiation based on the meaning they bring to it rather than the meaning the text itself holds.

• Due to the variety of technology and choices open to them, people are now an active audience rather than a passive one, which accepts how they read the signs of a text.

• For this reason there are different ways that the audience can read a text, which means any meaning comes from the audience’s construction of meaning rather than being brought to them by the producer, although this can be similar if there is a dominant reading.

METHOD• I used a Facebook group chat to carry out my focus group.

This is because time and place are less important due to the increase of technology (Marshall McLuhan) so I used technology to coordinate the people I was getting feedback from. This allowed me to gain feedback from a more varied group as they were not required to meet in a certain location at a certain time, which could have been a barrier to this.

• This allowed them to watch the music video in their own time, allowing them to take it in and absorb it before considering their feedback.

POSSIBLE BIAS?• The focus group may have been biased to an extent because they are

people I know rather than the general public so them knowing me could have affected the feedback they gave me.

• The use of technology to conduct my focus group may have lessened this as they were not giving feedback to my face, which may have helped their feedback to be more objective.
