Importance of Feedback

The quality of my final product was heavily reliant on the feedback I received from my peers. The effectiveness of my product is tracked and documented by this feedback,

allowing me to assess whether my product meets the needs of my audience, and what I need to change in

order to do this.In order to receive the most effective feedback, I targeted an audience in the same age range and demographic as my intended audience, mostly females aged 14 to 25. By doing this I was able to base my changes off of opinions

by my target audience, allowing me to make very specific changes in relation to this genre.

Summary – Draft 1Google Docs Questionnaire

• For my first edited draft I created a questionnaire on google Docs, which I distributed to a range of audience members who met my target demographic. This allowed me to easily distribute a designed questionnaire to anyone with access to my blog, which they could fill out freely.

• In my questionnaire, I asked questions such as:

• I tailored my questions to be appropriate/suitable to my target audience, asking questions that they would be able to understand with a typed answer option, rather than yes/no multiple choice answers, so I could receive the most helpful feedback. This also allowed me to pinpoint exactly where I was lacking particular elements/features.

Points to improve• From my results, I created a

summary of my first draft, where I assessed what I had done well and what I was lacking in my first edit. This allowed me to make the appropriate changes to my music video to improve it’s quality and build a better response from my

audience.

Results• As a result of this feedback, I made the creative decision to

start editing my video again. Although there were some good creative elements, I lacked fluency throughout my video, as well as interest, from my feedback I discovered that I had good visual representation, but lacked an engaging narrative. I also decided that the audio was too long, so decided to alter this too, to keep the video shorter and more effective. In order to this effectively, I deleted my first draft and started my editing process again.

• Although re-editing, collecting more effective footage and cropping the audio was time consuming, it benefitted me in the long term, as I produced a much better product after receiving my initial feedback. Some may have seen this as a setback, but ultimately, it improved my product significantly, something I would not have been able to achieve without relevant feedback.

Summary – Draft 2

Class / Teacher • The feedback I received for my second video draft/edit was mainly

from my fellow classmates and teacher. After showing my video to the class, I received a lot of verbal feedback which I made note of in order to improve my video further.

• This was particularly helpful as I was able to receive more knowledgeable and informed feedback from this group than my previously targeted audience. Although the initial feedback from my target demographic was useful in addressing the needs of my audience, by asking my classmates who had a much deeper understanding of the subject and it’s concepts, I was able to receive much more valuable and useful comments on how to improve the quality of my video.

• Throughout the whole editing process I received feedback from my classmates and teacher, as we continually tracked each others progress and shared ideas on how to improve certain aspects. This was very useful, as it helped me to improve parts of my video as I went along, rather than having to alter huge parts at the end of each draft.

Points to improve• The feedback I received from my classmates and teacher

was much more constructive and positive than my initial responses.

• I had established a clearer and more appropriate narrative/storyline, as well as improving the quality and relevancy of my footage used. I had been much more selective with the footage I used and how it visually represented certain lines or words, and had also changed my editing style, picking up the pace and making the video more interesting.

• The points to improve I received from my classmates at this point focused mainly on achieving more accurate timings in accordance with the audio, and just adding finishing touches to improve the quality further. This was all feedback I took on board, and applied to my final edit, crucial to my final outcome.

What have I learned?

• Through this process, I have learned the importance of receiving feedback in producing a high quality product. By creating questionnaires and organising knowledgeable focus groups, I was able to edit and construct my video to the best of my abilities, by taking on key responses from those relevant to my target demographic, as well as from people who have a deeper understanding of media conventions and necessities in producing an effective music video. Without this audience feedback, I may have had a completely different outcome, only informed by my research rather than the valued opinions of my target demographic.
