Ideologies • Our piece is centred around a young, white, middle-class couple. While

obvious disability is not shown in this clip we assume that they are psychopathic because of their disregard for human life and empathy. The victims are shown as possibly working-class teenagers.

• Our antagonists are firstly represented in a very positive light, nice young couple. However, when the basement is revealed it is ideologically disabling that such a normal ‘good’ couple could be so evil. I think the dominant ideology of the middle-class is hardworking, good people and that is why our clip is so shocking because you would not expect such a heinous crime from such nice people. It is iconic of horror to have a ‘final girl’ someone we expect nothing of, possibly the weakest in the group, to come through and save the day. This is used in horror because it is ideologically disabling and people view horror movies for their shock factor.

Mise-en-sceneMise-en-scene- Our use of lighting put the antagonist into binary opposition with the victim by putting the antagonist in the light and leaving the victim in the dark. Location helped us create contrast between the kitchen and the basement and with it creating contrast between the antagonists real life and their evil secret. We used costume to create the idea that they are normal people and trick the audience into placing themselves with the antagonists. The make up we used on the victims shows the audience they have been mistreated, this is a stereotype about the working class that they are never as well treated as the middle class. This representation of class is very negative, it is also used in the film the Purge it shows the middle class are greedy and cruel.

Camera Work & SoundCamera Work- We used close ups and tracking shots at the begininig to show who we are placed with. We then used angled shots to make the victuims look weak and handicam when revealing on of the victuims. We also used POV shots to see things from the perspective of the antagonist. This put the antagonists and victims into binary opposition, manking the antagonists controlling and the victims weak.

Our music creates tension which is seen in many horror films. The use of diegetic sound effect is often used to horror films to make the audience jump. We see sounds effects in all horror films.

EditingEditing- We used editing a montage to create tension, it also shows the antagonists organisation which dennotes cleverness. This is a dominant ideology about the middle class, that they are more educated, this is also shown in the psychological thriller One hour photo.
