1. In what ways does your media product use, 1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products?real media products? For my masthead I kept the fonts the same for all 3 media products, however I decided to

change the colours through out my cover page, contents page and double page spread. I chose to add black outline around the masthead for all three pages, likewise with ‘NME’ which have also used outlining on the text. Also both magazine mastheads are using capital letters and contain filled colours inside.

However my music magazine’s masthead also challenges the forms and conventions of real media products as it is a simple title with bold outlined text where as we can see here, MOJO and Kerrang’s mastheads are both really detailed with writing and labels coming out of them . In spite of this, I think my masthead looks good and professional because it combines both conventional and unconventional features of a good magazine resulting in making it unique and therefore more eye-catching and appealing.

I think the mise en scene of my images follow the codes and conventions of real media products because in most of my images that I have used in my magazine, I have kept the serious face look that most hip hop artists tend to have. As we can see in these two magazines, likewise with my magazine All Six artists have the serious moody looking face which makes people think they are really well known and respected people.

Page 6: Evaluation 1+2

However I have also challenged the conventions of real media products in the way that unlike some magazines all my images have been cropped from their original background and placed in different coloured backgrounds with added effects which I thought would make the images stand out more and look more eye-catching.

The people that are featured in my magazine challenge the forms and conventions of real media products as they are young and haven't got the same serious and extreme look a middle aged person would. Also my magazine consists of two males unlike most if not all magazines which always tend to have different artists throughout their magazine if not just on the front cover. On the other hand we can say that my magazine does also follow the conventions and forms in a the way that I haven't added any females in my magazine which tends to be the case with most music magazines except of course, the ones who feature female hip hop artists.

I created the title “Upcoming tours” by Firstly creating a text box and inserting the text. Next I changed the text colour to red and also added a black inner shadow and an outer shadow. I think this title challenges the conventions of real media products because it contains only two upper case letters which are the first two letters where as most titles are all uppercase letters. However I thought that my titles also follows the codes and conventions of real media products as it is in bold and is one of the biggest text in the page, therefore stands out and you can tell it is the title.

The written content of my magazine follows the codes and conventions of real music magazines because it contains the same sort of content you would expect to find a real music magazine. For example topics like, upcoming tours, Artist interviews, and information on new albums etc. Also the subscribe box featured in the contents page is quite conventional as you would find it in a lot of real magazines.

My magazine focuses on just one main genre which is clearly hip hop as you can see from the clothing the artists are wearing (Baseball caps and quilted jackets etc). Also the artists names make it clear the magazine is a hip hop magazine as most of them are street names or nicknames given by friends which you would mostly find in hip hop fans and artists. This follows the codes and conventions of real music magazines as my magazine presents the genre by the mise en scene of their images and artists.

The way my magazine is laid out for my cover page follows the codes and conventions of real media products. This is clear as I have used one main image, added text mainly on the left hand side of the magazine with varied sizes and fonts, and also used a header and footer which most magazines tend to have.

Page 11: Evaluation 1+2

However for my contents page i think that it challenges the conventions of real media products as it is simply laid out with one main image and doesn't contain other information except page numbers and titles unlike other magazines, for example the one below which contains a little more information than just page numbers and titles.

I kept my contents page simple because i thought that it will be easier to read and look for pages if it was laid out simply without lots of features around it. Even though this may challenge the conventions of other magazines I think it looks professional and appeals more to my target audience.

2: How Does Your Media Product Represent Particular Social Groups`

I have chosen to compare the artist 50 cent with the double page spread photo of my magazine to clarify how my magazine represents a casual street teenage social group.

Both artists have similar facial expressions – serious looking face and staring straight at you. In addition to this we can see that the artists are wearing baseball caps and casual clothes for example, jackets and t shirts.

Page 13: Evaluation 1+2

From the two images we can see that both artists more or less have the same style of hair which is really short and shaped up. It is clear that none of these artists have long hair or anything similar to this.

The people represented in this magazine tend to have an extreme serious moody look which all hip hop artists also tend to have. Overall I think that the aspects of the photos in my magazine represents a teenage social group that are interested in hip hop and therefore have the same dress sense and act the same as the artist of the genre.
