Transcript of European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016 Brochure
According to UNESCO, Croatia is a country with the greatest number of prote-
cted cultural phenomena in Europe. This is thanks to its natural-geographical
diversity, as well as its specific historical uniqueness. Croatia’s natural assets
greatly impact the development of tourismsocial and cultural life. Therefore,
today, Croatia represents one of the tourist super powers of the Mediterranean
which is evident by the continual increase in the number of tourist arrivals. A
warm sea, deeply drawn into the European continent, Mediterranean climate,
contemporary motorways and a favorable geo-transit position, are only some
of the reasons as to why many foreign tourists and world renowned tourism
magazine publishers consider Croatia the most desirable tourist destination.
Situated in South East Europe,
in a region lapped by the waves of the Mediterranean, Croatia
has always been a country of interesting intertwinement of central
European and Mediterranean cultural circles.
8 national parks and 11 nature parks
3000 protected cultural monuments
1246 islands, small islands and islets
56278 kilometers of indented coastline
WELCOME TO CROATIA
WELCOME TO CROATIA
The slogan of European Universities Games Zagreb-Rijeka 2016
is the basic concept of the synergy of the heart and mind, two
mighty organs of great contrast; however only through their
joint work it is possible to achieve the proper functioning of the
human body. The concept of dualism and synergy of the heart and
mind, promote all the key values that student sports represent:
ratio, education, prudence, strength, energy, fighting spirit
and love – characteristics that help young people achieve
excellence in their academic and athletic lives.

opening ceremony
WHAT INSPIRESUS
Our inspiration is our tradition. The first stu-
dent sports club was founded 113 years ago at the University of Zagreb. The
Federation of Academic Sports Clubs at the University of Zagreb was found-
ed 93 years ago. Mandatory physical education classes were introduced
in Croatian universities 53 years ago. 28 years ago the summer University
Games, also known as Universiade was organized in Zagreb. The Croatian
Academic Sports Federation was founded 23 years ago.
Visionis to organize the Games which will through their significance become a
catalyst for sports and social change, and provide strong support to the de-
velopment of university sports in Europe and Croatia as well as improve the
quality of life of Croatian students in general.
Our vision does not end with the organization of the EUG 2016, but rather our
long-term objective is to establish one of the most significant social-academic
events in Europe.
Warm up ! Given that the Games will be promoted through
sports competitions and other events connected
to student sports, the use of the title “WARMup for
2016” (in Croatian “ZAGRIJavanje za 2016”) is pro-
posed for these occasions. This title in Croatian con-
tains the beginning letters of the names of both host
cities (ZAGreb, RIJeka) integrated into the sports term
which usually denotes activities before a competition.
In the English language, this title can be translated as
“Warm up for EUG 2016”.
Ì UNISPORT HR - over 20 student sport competitions

LegacyBy introducing key innovations in the programme of the EUG 2016, with a combi-
nation of rationality and emotionality in 2 host cities, we plan to and will organize
the most successful EUG to date which will be a turning point in the development
of the EUSA:

Ì Methodology Standardization
Ì Sports program for students with disabilities

Ì Sophisticated Volunteer Programme
Ì Powered by the Games events
Ì Promotional accommodation Packages

being build as part of the university campus in Rijeka. The dormitories will
have a capacity of 3,900 beds divided in double and single rooms and in
several single rooms for students with disabilities. Two double rooms will
share kitchenette, bathroom with a shower and a loggia. All rooms will be air
conditioned and have free Wi-Fi.
Catering Within the campus there is a restaurant for the competitors and represen-
tatives of the national teams in EUG 2016, with a capacity of 5.000 meals.
The restaurant has a central part, where food will be served in two lines, a
cafeteria with a large terrace and separate spaces where catering for special
guests can be arranged.

Cvjetno naseljeThe capacity of the dormitories Cvjetno naselje is 1,762 beds. The rooms
are mostly double rooms, but a certain number of single rooms will also be
provided, some of which will be for students with disabilities. The complex
with the accommodation facilities also includes 2 adequate restaurants,
cafeteria and confectionery for all participants.
ZAGREBThe capital city of the Republic of
Croatia, is one of the most beautiful, but also one
of the youngest European capitals. With county status
of a city, Zagreb is the administrative, economic, diplo-
matic and cultural centre of the country. The first laic city
school was opened in the middle of the 14th century, the first
high school was founded in the 16th century, while the university
was founded in the second half of the same century.
Zagreb is a city of science and culture. The oldest Croatian National Theatre, a
neo-Baroque building, was opened by Emperor Franz Joseph I in 1895. From
spring to autumn many open-air plays and exhibitions are held which are a
real attraction for visitors, ensuring a special atmosphere in the city. Other
attractions include the lively outdoor market, one of the few remaining in
Europe, which is an absolutely first class experience for all those who
come to Zagreb.
Zagreb is also the stage for many cultural and other inter-
national events which Zagreb intensively experiences. A
city filled with a young population is predestined to
also be an exceptionally sports orientated city with
many sports facilities, including European and
World champions medal winners in many sports.
However, our tour of Zagreb does not end
here. The greatest value of this city for many
is its atmosphere and the people you’ll meet
here. Zagreb has a story and heart, a big heart.
DID YOU KNOW?
The first mechanical pencil (1906) and the first solid-ink
fountain pen (1907) was invented by Eduard Penkala in Zagreb
A big historical crossroad
where culture and civilizations collided and interse-
cted. Due to its positioning, history was not kind to the
inhabitants of Rijeka, but nevertheless it taught them much.
First and foremost it taught them tolerance and openness, two
characteristics that make life more beautiful and pleasant, particu-
larly in the contemporary world which is characterised to a much larger
extent by connections rather than divisions.
A city which emerged in Roman times, through numerous transitions, blosso-
med from the mighty industrial and port centre of the Austro-Hungarian Mo-
narchy to the present day metropolis of the northern Adriatic is developing into
the university and business centre of a strong tourist region, with a recognisable
and diverse way of life.
The city with its street life, relaxed manner and numerous events provides much
for its inhabitants and numerous guests. The name “Rijeka” in Croatian means
“flowing water” as much as it is ordinary and simple, it perfectly describes
the spirit of the city, its flexibility and diversity. The city of Rijeka accepts
and welcomes with ease. Hospitality, departures, arrivals and constant
changes are the historical code of this city. The liveliness of the Eu-
ropean Universities Games will perfectly and easily fit in and enrich
the everyday Rijeka rhythm.
RIJEKA
DID YOU KNOW?
First torpedo was invented in Rijeka. Started in 1866 with the
launching of a torpedo in front of the first torpedo factory
in the world.
The concept of our mascot is based on the idea: “It is important to participate” Cute and small hamster embodies this idea the best. This animal is known for its specific
way of having fun – running. Our hamster is not so muscular, but it does not stop him to
do sports. The most important thing for him is to socialize, have fun and participate.
That makes him a winner regardless of the outcome and that is the motto of the
Games..
