Current Working Role

During these trying times we have been working relentlessly to improve early years services, schools and safeguarding arrangements so that all our children realise their full potential. We are also seeking more European funding for our schools to help with the continuing development of young people in languages, music and culture.

Other life experience:

I have worked as a labourer in a mill, a bus driver, a youth worker and a police officer. As a mature student I studied law, including European Law, I qualified as a Solicitor and practised for several years and was appointed as a Partner.

I am actively involved with a large number of organisations, and have been trustee of several charities, including:-

• Trustee of the British Red Cross: Following the Kashmir earthquake in 2005 I coordinated several million pounds worth of fundraising, which was used to set up schools, build houses and field hospitals.

• Founding director of a credit union which has, over the last 16 years, provided interest free loans, business advice and employment.

• Member of both GMB and Unite. My extensive and varied community experience, alongside my strong Labour Party campaigning and my current and previous council roles, have allowed me to develop excellent time management skills as well as giving me an unparalleled understanding of how to work for and with the whole of a diverse community.

• I am a committed trade unionist.

• I campaign for social justice and believe that combating poverty, prejudice and inequality is the prime focus of the Labour Party.

• I have always worked to help local people achieve a more democratic, fair society. Power, wealth and opportunity should be in the hands of the many and not the few.

We want to work with a wide range of organisations to build the case for directly-elected regional government for the North based on the principles of democracy and subsidiarity, social equity and justice, and sustainable development. Hannah Mitchell (1871-1946) was an outstanding working class socialist and feminist who spent most of her life in the North-West: in Bolton, Ashton-under-Lyne and Manchester where she served on the council for many years.Join us! North West Unite Against Fascism Unite Against Fascism (UAF) is a broad-based coalition uniting everyone who opposes far right groups such as the fascist BNP and racist EDL. UAF was central to defeating the BNP in council elections in Barking, Burnley, Stoke-on-Trent and elsewhere. In November 2011, with the support of North West TUC, North West UAF launched their ‘Griffin Must Go’ campaign to remove fascist BNP leader Nick Griffin from his seat as MEP for the North West Region, in the 2014 European Elections. The statement supporting the campaign is already supported by a number of North West MEPs, MPs, Councillors, Trades Unionists and others. The BNP are already throwing resources into defending Griffin’s seat and will only require a small percentage of the vote to keep it. The Regional ‘Griffin Must Go’ Conference will be held in Liverpool on Sunday 2nd December. Contact details: [email protected] 0750 737 3609 uaf.org.uk

Cuadrilla

Cuadrilla is a British company, based in Staffordshire. Formed in 2007 as a privately owned exploration and production company, our focus is on bringing together experts to explore onshore natural gas. In 2008, Cuadrilla was granted a licence area in Lancashire, where analysis suggested significant resources of shale gas may exist. We have a number of exploration sites in the Bowland Shale basin. We also have a production site at Elswick, which has been generating electricity from natural gas since 1993. Members of Cuadrilla’s management team have each played leading roles in the drilling and/or hydraulic fracturing of more than 3,000 natural gas and oil wells around the world. Cuadrilla aims to be a model for the safe exploration of onshore gas resources in the UK. At Cuadrilla, we’re acutely aware of all the responsibilities this brings, particularly with regard to safety, environmental protection and working with local communities. The recovery of natural gas from shale is still developing in the UK. This gas could reduce our reliance on imported gas, increase the country’s energy-sufficiency and secure investment and jobs for local communities across the country.

The Hannah Mitchell Foundation

The Foundation was formed earlier this year to campaign for devolved government in the North of England. Part of our role is gathering support within the centre-left and influencing mainstream thinking inside the Labour Party. Our patrons include several North West MPs: Louise Ellman, Debbie Abrahams, Jim Dobbin, Dave Heyes and Jonny Reynolds. We are a forum for the development of a distinctive radical politics, rooted in our ethical socialist traditions of mutuality, co-operation, community and internationalism.
