Labour Party experience:

• Served the Labour Party for 14 years in many different positions from ward to national. Member of the North West Regional Board since 2005. Member of Labour Movement for Europe, also involved in establishing the BME forum, an organisation providing a bridge between the Labour Party and the BME community.

• Gained my seat with Manchester City Council in 2000 by defeating a Lib Dem. Served as lead member for Race Equality and Assistant Executive Member for Finance and Personnel, before my current role, executive member for Children’s Services.

• Lord Mayor of Manchester 2005-6. Vice President of World Mayors for Peace.

• Awarded Mayor of the Year by the Co-op Bank for my work in strengthening community relations. In 2008 I was awarded a C.B.E. for my services to community and interfaith relations and to local government.

Current Working Role

During these trying times we have been working relentlessly to improve early years services, schools and safeguarding arrangements so that all our children realise their full potential. We are also seeking more European funding for our schools to help with the continuing development of young people in languages, music and culture.

Other life experience:

I have worked as a labourer in a mill, a bus driver, a youth worker and a police officer. As a mature student I studied law, including European Law, I qualified as a Solicitor and practised for several years and was appointed as a Partner.

I am actively involved with a large number of organisations, and have been trustee of several charities, including:-

• Trustee of the British Red Cross: Following the Kashmir earthquake in 2005 I coordinated several million pounds worth of fundraising, which was used to set up schools, build houses and field hospitals.

• Founding director of a credit union which has, over the last 16 years, provided interest free loans, business advice and employment.

• Member of both GMB and Unite. I have also worked with Unison and Usdaw on different campaigns and training programmes, including improving workers rights, European social charter and their anti-racism work. After the disturbances in Oldham, Burnley and Bradford in 2001 I assisted to help strengthen community relations.

• On behalf of Foreign & Commonwealth Office I went to a conference in Central Asia promoting democracy. I have also attended many European conferences on sharing good practice on community cohesion and on the Israel and Palestine dispute.

Knowledge:

Economy and Regeneration: • Successfully managed several businesses and for four years acted as an adviser to the Department of Trade and Industry.

• Led and received trade delegations between the North West and China, Pakistan and the Middle East.

• Over the 12 years that I have been a councillor my ward has seen a great deal of regeneration with European and other funding. Our area has seen improvements including new schools, health centres, housing, a new tram station and business opportunities including a large shopping centre which created over a thousand jobs.

Crime and Safety:• I have knowledge and experience on issues of human rights and European cross border crime, and am committed to the importance of

reducing both crime and the fear of crime in our communities.

• I have worked with the Home Office as a member of a task group looking at the challenges Britain faces from extremism.

• I am currently an advisor to the Greater Manchester Police Crime Commissioner.

North West Unite Against Fascism Unite Against Fascism (UAF) is a broad-based coalition uniting everyone who opposes far right groups such as the fascist BNP and racist EDL. UAF was central to defeating the BNP in council elections in Barking, Burnley, Stoke-on-Trent and elsewhere.In November 2011, with the support of North West TUC, North West UAF launched their ‘Griffin Must Go’ campaign to remove fascist BNP leader Nick Griffin from his seat as MEP for the North West Region, in the 2014 European Elections. The statement supporting the campaign is already supported by a number of North West MEPs, MPs, Councillors, Trades Unionists and others. North West Unite Against Fascism Unite Against Fascism (UAF) is a broad-based coalition uniting everyone who opposes far right groups such as the fascist BNP and racist EDL. UAF was central to defeating the BNP in council elections in Barking, Burnley, Stoke-on-Trent and elsewhere.In November 2011, with the support of North West TUC, North West UAF launched their ‘Griffin Must Go’ campaign to remove fascist BNP leader Nick Griffin from his seat as MEP for the North West Region, in the 2014 European Elections. The statement supporting the campaign is already supported by a number of North West MEPs, MPs, Councillors, Trades Unionists and others. The BNP are already throwing resources into defending Griffin’s seat and will only require a small percentage of the vote to keep it.
