6 November 2012LONDONTHE GEORGE DANIELS HOROLOGICAL COLLECTION

An exceptional collection of watches and clocks belonging to the great British watchmaker and inventor George Daniels (1926 –2011) will be soldat Sotheby’s London in November. George Daniels’s life story is anextraordinary ‘rags to riches’ tale that begins in poverty and neglect, andends under the world’s spotlight. He became the greatest British horologist of the 20th century, an important collector and innovator, who waswelcomed into the families of the celebrated European watchmakingdynasties. Sotheby’s sale of his personal collection – comprising timepieces

he made himself as well as fine examples of antiques watches and clocks – is a major auctionevent. With estimates ranging from £200 to £900,000, the majority of the 137 lots have neverbefore been offered on the open market. The sale will include nine prized timepieces handmadeby Daniels himself, and all of the pr oceeds will go to benefit the George Daniel’s EducationalTrust.

Sotheby’s will present for sale an exceptional range of over 400 Fine ChineseCeramics and Works of Art. The auction will include an exemplary selectionof important Chinese ceramics, jades, metalwork, furniture and scholar’sobjects dating from the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) to Republican China(began 1912) - displaying the wide variety of styles and media for whichChinese works of art are celebrated. Alongside this biannual auction,Sotheby’s will offer two single owner sales - 'Treasures from the Qing Court,

A Personal Perspective', a selection of 22 works all produced for the Imperial court during theQing dynasty from the collection of Cameel Halim, and ‘ Chinese Ceramics from the Collection of Peter and Nancy Thompson’.

This sale will feature some 200 items spanning four centuries of French,German, Belgian, Dutch and Italian creativity. The sale will also include for thefirst time silver from Central and South America (dating from the 17 th-19 th centuries).

Three consecutive sales devoted to Furniture, Sculpture, Old Masters andobjets d’ art will take place at So theby’s on 9 th November. Alongside itstraditional Autumn sale in the field, this year Sotheby’s is honoured tooffer two important private collections. The first collection comprises aremarkable ensemble of around thirty pieces of furniture and objets d’art ,assembled by a leading entrepreneur who was also an eclectic andrefined collector. These works were mostly acquired around thirty years ago, and displayed in asumptuous setting that blended French Grand Siècle classicism with the influence of the EnglishRegency Period. The second collection, formed 60 years ago, reflects the demanding taste of amajor connoisseur of 18 th century furniture and paintings. The three sales will present 18 th century pieces, with works by BVRB I, Martin Carlin, François Boucher and Jean-BaptisteLeprince.

Portrait of Kate Perugini, Daughter of Charles Dickens by Sir JohnEverett Millais (1829- 1896) is to be offered for sale at Sotheby’s inthe bicentennial year of the author’s death. The famous andinnovative portrait will headline the Victorian works in thecompany’s auction of British & Irish Art in London on 13 th November. Estimated at £150,000-200,000, the painting comes tothe market from the Estate of Katherine Mellon, and following itsinclusion in the touring V&A exhibition ‘The Cult of Beauty’ in SanFrancisco. The auction will feature a group of forty works by Britishartist Edward Seago. The Ronald Horton / Derek Ancil Collectioncomprises one of the most important groups of its kind ever to cometo auction. With estimates ranging from £3,000-5,000 to £60,000-80,000, the collection is expected to bring in excess of £500,000. Among the Scottish works onoffer is In the Orchard by James Guthrie (1859 – 1930). It is being sold on behalf of the EwingFoundation for the Benefit of Deaf Children and comes to the market with an estimate of £600,000-800,000. The sale will also feature Irelan d’s favourite painters: Paul Henry, Jack B.Yeats, Louis le Brocquy, Harry Clarke, William Leech and Patrick Swift, among others.

Comprisingover 300 lots, estimated between CHF 6 and 8 million, the offering is alsohighlighted by rare models of complicated timepieces.

13 & 14 November 2012LONDONMODERN AND POST-WAR BRITISH ART

Sotheby’s London will present Property from a Chelsea Collection as part of its Modern and Post-War British Art sales on 13 th & 14 th November.This important group of 56 works, by artists including Frank Auerbach,Lucian Freud, John Craxton and Graham Sutherland provides a uniqueand revelatory insight into many of the major artistic movements inBritain since the Second World War. Amassed over 20 years, thecollection spans a period of immense stylistic change and includes many

superb pieces that have never before been seen at auction, bringing together an excitingselection of fresh to the market paint ings, drawings, etchings and sculpture by some of Britain’smost recognized artists. It is estimated to realise a combined total in excess of £1.5 million. Afurther highlight is Sir Peter Blake’s 1967 collage for the inner sleeve of The Beatle’s legendary Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band - one of the best-selling albums of all time, and alandmark in musical history. This rare and highly influential artwork, estimated at £50,000-80,000, is the centrepiece of 18 works from the Collection of the late architect Colin St John“Sandy” Wilson (1922 -2007), all of which are being offered at auction for the first time.

The November sale of Finest and Rarest Wines features three decades of Château Lafite studded with outstanding vintages, such as 1982, 1986,1989, 1990, 1998, 2000, 2005 and 2009. From the cellar of a 14thcentury European castle, La Tâche 1952 leads into a superlativecollection of DRC which includes 1999 and 2001 assortment cases, LaTâche 2005 and rare Montrachet. Other treasures include Yquem 1947,La Lagune 1959, Trotanoy 1982, Grands Echézeaux 1999 from Engel,Hermitage 1999 from Chave, Quinta do Noval Nacional 1963, and amethuselah of Cristal 1990.

Commissioned in the late 1920s, this stunning piecewas singled out among the extraordinary jewels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries andillustrated in the recently released book, Celebrating Jewellery , by David Bennett and DanielaMascetti . Comprising over 590 lots, this autumn’s sale will also be highlighted by an important selection of royal and noble jewels, as well as exceptional gemstones, diamonds and periodjewels.

Among the wealth of ornithological, zoological and botanical worksoffered in this sale is a stunning collection of late 18 th and early 19 th century ornithological watercolours. The thirteen volumes wereassembled by the colourful Emperor Woodford in an attempt to captureall known birds. The artists, who included Ramsay Richard Reinagle,Thomas Lewin and Sydenham Edwards, drew on the natural historycollections of the day such as those of François Levaillant, Joseph Banks,The Leverian Museum and the menagerie of the Prince of Orange. Whenhard times forced Woodford to sell the drawings at Sotheby’s in 18 09,the collection was acquired by the bibliophile John Dent, who made it

available to the ornithologist John Latham for his General History of Birds , first published in1821. The collection of watercolours is estimated to bring £300,000-00,000.

This sale will take place during the Paris Photo fair and features an arrayof major photographs from vintage to contemporary. A highlight is aportfolio entitled Magnum Nudes , from the famous Magnum Photosagency, which this year celebrates its 65 th anniversary, to be sold in aid of the Magnum Heritage Foundation . The portfolio consists of 65 collectorprints, both black-and-white and colour, by many of the most famousphotographers of the 20 th century, including Henri Cartier-Bresson,Werner Bischof, Robert Capa, Inge Morath, Steve McCurry, Martine



Franck, Raymond Depardon, Abbas, Josef Koudelka, Martin Parr, Patrick Zachmann, MarcRiboud, Jim Goldberg, Susan Meiselas, Erich Hartmann, Bruce Davidson and Paolo Pellegrin(est. €1 00,000-200,000). The sale will also include a number of vintage silver prints, includingportraits by August Sander and Diane Arbus, alongside a surrealist composition by Man Ray.Celebrated images by such masters of fashion photography as Peter Lindbergh and Irving Pennwill add a touch of elegance and glamour, while the contemporary section comprises works byRobert Mapplethorpe, Izima Kaoru, Candida Höfer and Massimo Vitali.

This distinguished collection of rare books, dating from the 15th to 20thcenturies, includes books of historical and literary provenance. A movingcopy of A la recherche du temps perdu by Marcel Proust includes a longcorrespondence with his friend, the art critic Jean-Louis Vaudoyer on thefirst five volumes (est. €100,000 -150,000). Other books to be offeredoffered were owned by such figures as Napoléon and Oscar Wilde. Amongthe impressive group of botanical and travel books is Guillaume Chrétiende Lamoignon ’s red morocco copy of Ca tes by’s Natural History .

The wealth and diversity of Europe’s cultural and artistic heritagewill be broadly represented at Sotheby’s 19 th Century EuropeanPaintings sale with works by preeminent Continentalartists. Leading the way is Spain’s greatest exponent of the period,Joaquín Sorolla with Pescadores valencianos , a work that marks astylistic watershed in the artist’s oeuvre , was recognised at the timeas a masterpiece and boasts a very distinguished provenance (est.£1,000,000-1,500,000). Headlining the Scandinavian works is the

recently re-discovered oil study Marie Krøyer and Anna Ancher on the Beach at Skagen byDanish artist Peder Severin Krøyer (1851 – 1909). The study, estimated at £150,000-250,000, isone of four recorded preparatory oil paintings that relate to Krøyer’s large -scale ‘blue period’masterpiece Summer Evening on Skagen’s South Beach in the Skagen Museum, Denmark. Paintedin 1893, the motif is arguably the high point of th e artist’s exploration of mood painting.Compellingly evocative, the image has proved enduringly popular; its lyricism continues toresonate in the popular imagination to this day, not only across Denmark but the world-over.Also of note in the sale is a painting by Gustave Courbet never before offered on the market. LeRuisseau de Plaisir-Fontaine, dans la vallée du Puits Noir , painted in 1864, comes to auction froma French Private Collection and its provenance can be traced unbroken through the same familyto the artist, and a sitter for Courbet’s masterpiece L’Enterrement à Ornans (Burial at Ornans) .Claude-Hélène-Prosper Teste (1801 – 1869) was Mayor of Ornans and a friend of Courbet, andthe first owner of the present work. The painting will be offered with an estimate of £200,000-300,000.

Sotheby’s biannual auction of Important Russian Art willpresent a selection of major works produced by eminent figures in the Russian art firmament. Banda Woman with her Child (est. £500,000 - 700,000) by Alexander EvgenievichYakovlev was painted in Paris in 1926 - on the artist’s returnfrom the famous Croisière noire expedition across Africa.Other highlights include Portrait of Praskovia Mamontova (est.

£300,000-500,000): the most important portrait by Valentin Alexandrovich Serov ever to havecome to the market. These works are complemented by Sergei Sudeikin’s Russian Winter Carnival (est. £200,000-300,000) , Wassily Kandinsky’s Rapallo –Strasse (est. £ 150,000-200,000),Martiros Saryan’s The Poet (est. £500,000-700,000) and an exceptional 1886 panorama of Constantinople by Ivan Aivazovsky (est. £700,000-900,000).

28 November 2012 LONDONRUSSIAN WORKS OF ART, FABERGÉ AND ICONS

The Russian Works of Art, Fabergé and Icons sale will beheadlined by an Important Imperial Silver-Gilt and CloisonnéEnamel Icon of Christ Pantocrator, Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1884.The Icon commemorates the miraculous survival of EmperorAlexander III and his family when the Imperial train deraileddisastrously near Borki in 1888. 21 members of the Imperialretinue died and the Emperor’s dog Kamchatka was killedinstantly at his master’s feet. The Emperor survived and waslater presented with this Icon by his elite guards. Exquisitelyenamelled with floral detailing, this rare and richly historicalwork displays the most filigree craftsmanship and is saturated in

Romanov history. After the Revolution this powerfully emotive Icon was believed to be amongmany of the Imperial family’s belongings th at were dispersed on the European antiquarianmarket. It carries an estimate of £180,000-250,000.

Among thehighlights are Marino Marini’s colourful composition with thetheme of cavallo and cavaliere , a delicate vase of roses by GiorgioMorandi estimated at €190,000 -250,000, Giorgio de Chirico’s‘painting in a painting’, Interno Metafisico dated 1952-53 (est.€180,000 -250,000), and Alberto Magnelli’s L’attente dans le jardin .The sale also includes masterworks by Piero Manzoni and AlbertoBurri; Pop Art by Tom Wesselman, Roy Lichtenstein, Allen Jonesand Mel Ramos; and post-war works from the 1970s by GiulioPaolini.

Arturo Toscanini was the greatest conductor of the20 th century and this sale will feature such important pieces as a Giuseppe Verdi Autograph Manuscript,Containing Three Early Drafts for the Opening of ‘Falstaff ’ (est. £80,000-100,000); his AutographManuscript of the ‘Ave Maria’ for Cho rus, from theQuattro Pezzi Sacri (est. £80,000-100,000) and a FelixMendelssohn Autograph Manuscript Full Score of theOverture ‘Die Schöne Melusine’, op.32 (est. £400,000-600,000). Comprising 88 lots, the single-owner sale isestimated to realise in excess of £1 million.

This sale of 105 lots will celebrate Swiss Art in all itsrichness and diversity, and comprises artworks fromthe 19th century to the present day. In addition toleading figures of traditional Swiss painting, such asFélix Vallotton, Giovanni Giacometti and FerdinandHodler, the sale will feature works from the second half of the 20 th century and by contemporary artists,including Jean Tinguely, Robert Müller and Meret Oppenheim. Sculpture will take centre-stage with aselection of works by Max Bill, Niki de Saint Phalle and



Jean Tinguely, as well as artists recognised internationally who will make their first appearanceat auction. Highlights in the sale include a stunning “composed” landscape painted by FélixVallotton in 1920, Lisière de forêt (Edge of the Wood) (est. This unrivalled private collection of precious Central Europeansilver contains over 200 works, spanning four centuries, from thecollection of the eminent radiologist and art historian, Dr. IstvánHeller. These exceptional pieces originate from the most famousworkshops and centres of Central Europe, including Maastricht,Amsterdam, Nuremberg and “city of goldsmiths”, A ugsburg (80pieces), but also from some of the rarer ancillary centres of

Halberstadt, Olmutz, Riga and Rostock. Amassed by Dr. Heller over some 50 years, this uniqueand scholarly collection is estimated to realise in excess of £1.8 million.

This December Sotheby’s will offer for sale three Renaissancemasterworks from the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth:one of the greatest drawings by Raphael remaining in privatehands, and two 15 th-century illuminated manuscripts whichrank among the finest examples of their kind ever to come toauction. Executed in black chalk, Raphael’s Head of an Apostle ,c.1519-20 (estimated at £10 –15 million), is a highly important drawing within the artist’s oeuvre : an extremely refined studyfor one of the key figures in the Transfiguration , one of thegreatest of all Renaissance paintings The manuscripts to besold were made for two of the greatest libraries of the 15 th century and are flawlessly preserved, with dazzling royal and

ducal provenances. The first, the Mystere de la Vengeance is estimated at £4-6 million, and thesecond, estimated at £3-5 million, is an account of the fictional and swashbuckling Deeds of Sir Gillion de Trazegnies in the Middle East and was once among the most treasured works in thelibrary of great Renaissance patron of the arts François I, King of France, 1515-47. These worksare complemented by Jan Havicksz. Steen’s The Prayer Before the Meal (est. £5/7 million) andRome, A View of the River Tiber at the Porto Della Legna Looking Towards Castel Sant’Angelo,with Saint Peter’s Basilica in the Distance (est. £1.2-1.8 million) by Gaspar van Wittel, calledVanvitelli.

The highly respected Mayfair silver dealer Michael Wellby built up aremarkable private collection of jewellery over 60 years, featuring works of exquisite craftsmanship, ranging in date from the 16 th to the 20 th Century.The single-owner sale will comprise 211 lots with a combined estimate of £800,000-£1,000,000. The finest single-owner collection of original book illustrationsever to appear at auction will be presented at Sotheby’s on 12 th December. The unprecedented collection of over 100 ink andwatercolour drawings, featuring illustrations by the finest artistsand from the most loved books, comes from the private collectionof the renowned film director Michael Winner. Alongside E.H.Shepard’s first depiction of Winnie -the-Pooh with ChristopherRobin (from Winnie-the-Pooh), the sale will include illustrationsby Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, Beatrix Potter, Arthur Rackham,William Heath Robinson and John Tenniel. In total, the sale willcomprise over 150 lots of illustrations and books, and is estimatedto realise in excess of £1 million.
