George Daniels’s life story is an extraordinary ‘rags to riches’ tale that begins in poverty and neglect, and ends under the world’s spotlight. He became the greatest British horologist of the 20th century, an important collector and innovator, who was welcomed into the families of the celebrated European watchmaking dynasties. Sotheby’s sale of his personal collection – comprising timepieces he made himself as well as fine examples of antiques watches and clocks is a major auction event. With estimates ranging from £200 to £900,000, the majority of the 137 lots have never before been offered on the open market. The sale will include nine prized timepieces handmade by Daniels himself, and all of the proceeds will go to benefit the George Daniel’s Educational Trust. 7 November 2012 LONDON FINE CHINESE CERAMICS AND WORKS OF ART Sotheby’s will present for sale an exceptional range of over 400 Fine Chinese Ceramics and Works of Art. The auction will include an exemplary selection of important Chinese ceramics, jades, metalwork, furniture and scholar’s objects dating from the Han Dynasty (206 BC - 220 AD) to Republican China (began 1912) - displaying the wide variety of styles and media for which Chinese works of art are celebrated. Alongside this biannual auction, Sotheby’s will offer two single owner sales - 'Treasures from the Qing Court, A Personal Perspective', a selection of 22 works all produced for the Imperial court during the Qing dynasty from the collection of Cameel Halim, and ‘ Chinese Ceramics from the Collection of Peter and Nancy Thompson’.

Alongside itstraditional Autumn sale in the field, this year Sotheby’s is honoured tooffer two important private collections. The first collection comprises aremarkable ensemble of around thirty pieces of furniture and objets d’art ,assembled by a leading entrepreneur who was also an eclectic andrefined collector. These works were mostly acquired around thirty years ago, and displayed in asumptuous setting that blended French Grand Siècle classicism with the influence of the EnglishRegency Period. The second collection, formed 60 years ago, reflects the demanding taste of amajor connoisseur of 18 th century furniture and paintings. Portrait of Kate Perugini, Daughter of Charles Dickens by Sir JohnEverett Millais (1829- 1896) is to be offered for sale at Sotheby’s inthe bicentennial year of the author’s death. The famous andinnovative portrait will headline the Victorian works in thecompany’s auction of British & Irish Art in London on 13 th November. Estimated at £150,000-200,000, the painting comes tothe market from the Estate of Katherine Mellon, and following itsinclusion in the touring V&A exhibition ‘The Cult of Beauty’ in SanFrancisco. The auction will feature a group of forty works by Britishartist Edward Seago. The Ronald Horton / Derek Ancil Collectioncomprises one of the most important groups of its kind ever to cometo auction. With estimates ranging from £3,000-5,000 to £60,000-80,000, the collection is expected to bring in excess of £500,000. Among the Scottish works onoffer is In the Orchard by James Guthrie (1859 – 1930). It is being sold on behalf of the EwingFoundation for the Benefit of Deaf Children and comes to the market with an estimate of £600,000-800,000. Among the wealth of ornithological, zoological and botanical worksoffered in this sale is a stunning collection of late 18 th and early 19 th century ornithological watercolours. The thirteen volumes wereassembled by the colourful Emperor Woodford in an attempt to captureall known birds. The artists, who included Ramsay Richard Reinagle,Thomas Lewin and Sydenham Edwards, drew on the natural historycollections of the day such as those of François Levaillant, Joseph Banks,The Leverian Museum and the menagerie of the Prince of Orange. Whenhard times forced Woodford to sell the drawings at Sotheby’s in 18 09,the collection was acquired by the bibliophile John Dent, who made it

available to the ornithologist John Latham for his General History of Birds , first published in1821. The collection of watercolours is estimated to bring £300,000-00,000.

The wealth and diversity of Europe’s cultural and artistic heritagewill be broadly represented at Sotheby’s 19 th Century EuropeanPaintings sale with works by preeminent Continentalartists. Leading the way is Spain’s greatest exponent of the period,Joaquín Sorolla with Pescadores valencianos , a work that marks astylistic watershed in the artist’s oeuvre , was recognised at the timeas a masterpiece and boasts a very distinguished provenance (est.£1,000,000-1,500,000). Headlining the Scandinavian works is the

recently re-discovered oil study Marie Krøyer and Anna Ancher on the Beach at Skagen byDanish artist Peder Severin Krøyer (1851 – 1909). The study, estimated at £150,000-250,000, isone of four recorded preparatory oil paintings that relate to Krøyer’s large -scale ‘blue period’masterpiece Summer Evening on Skagen’s South Beach in the Skagen Museum, Denmark. Paintedin 1893, the motif is arguably the high point of th e artist’s exploration of mood painting.Compellingly evocative, the image has proved enduringly popular; its lyricism continues toresonate in the popular imagination to this day, not only across Denmark but the world-over.Also of note in the sale is a painting by Gustave Courbet never before offered on the market. LeRuisseau de Plaisir-Fontaine, dans la vallée du Puits Noir , painted in 1864, comes to auction froma French Private Collection and its provenance can be traced unbroken through the same familyto the artist, and a sitter for Courbet’s masterpiece L’Enterrement à Ornans (Burial at Ornans) .Claude-Hélène-Prosper Teste (1801 – 1869) was Mayor of Ornans and a friend of Courbet, andthe first owner of the present work. The Russian Works of Art, Fabergé and Icons sale will beheadlined by an Important Imperial Silver-Gilt and CloisonnéEnamel Icon of Christ Pantocrator, Ovchinnikov, Moscow, 1884.The Icon commemorates the miraculous survival of EmperorAlexander III and his family when the Imperial train deraileddisastrously near Borki in 1888. 21 members of the Imperialretinue died and the Emperor’s dog Kamchatka was killedinstantly at his master’s feet. The Emperor survived and waslater presented with this Icon by his elite guards. Exquisitelyenamelled with floral detailing, this rare and richly historicalwork displays the most filigree craftsmanship and is saturated in

This December Sotheby’s will offer for sale three Renaissancemasterworks from the Devonshire Collection at Chatsworth:one of the greatest drawings by Raphael remaining in privatehands, and two 15 th-century illuminated manuscripts whichrank among the finest examples of their kind ever to come toauction. Executed in black chalk, Raphael’s Head of an Apostle ,c.1519-20 (estimated at £10 –15 million), is a highly important drawing within the artist’s oeuvre : an extremely refined studyfor one of the key figures in the Transfiguration , one of thegreatest of all Renaissance paintings The manuscripts to besold were made for two of the greatest libraries of the 15 th century and are flawlessly preserved, with dazzling royal and

ducal provenances. The first, the Mystere de la Vengeance is estimated at £4-6 million, and thesecond, estimated at £3-5 million, is an account of the fictional and swashbuckling Deeds of Sir Gillion de Trazegnies in the Middle East and was once among the most treasured works in thelibrary of great Renaissance patron of the arts François I, King of France, 1515-47. These worksare complemented by Jan Havicksz.
