Southern Europe

• Most of Southern Europe is made up of peninsulas and island.

• Southern Europe has what’s known as a Mediterranean climate.

• Two major religions; Catholic, and Orthodox (Greece)

West-Central Europe

• Most of the region has a marine west coast climate with mild summers, cold winters, and frequent rain.

• West-Central Europe’s mild climate and resources support agriculture, energy production, and tourism.

• Physical features are the Alps, and Northern European Plains.

Northern Europe

• British Isles—a group of islands located across the English Channel from the rest of Europe– Marine west coast climate

• Scandinavia—a region of islands and peninsulas in far northern Europe, including Iceland to the west– Artic climate

Eastern Europe

• Not economically as strong as the west.

• Under Soviet control for most of the 20th century.– This means that they were communist

• Primary religion is Orthodox

• Ethnic Cleansing in Balkans over race and religion.

• Climate- Humid continental (four seasons, cold winters)

• Cold War (1946-1991)

• USSR (Russia) occupied countries of E Europe to create a buffer zone (region to protect Russia from further European invasion)

• NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) in Western Europe (U.S.), and Warsaw Pact in E Europe (U.S.S.R.)

• Both sides stockpiled weapons, waged propaganda war, raised fears

Urbanization:

• Concentration of populations in towns and cities.

• 75% of Europeans live in cities.
