EUREKA in glance

• A European Research Programme

• Bottom-up project generation by partners

• Flexible mechanism and lack of

bureaucracy

• Market orientation

• Target group: mainly industry (particular

attention to SMEs)

• Funding: public, private, own (each member country has national

criteria and schemes for co-financing)

• Not an EU-programme

but complementarity and co-operation

(ERA)

Theory and practice of EUREKA

Advantages• Application can be submitted at any time• No restriction on product types• Flexible timetable and work program• Add partners as required• Eureka NPC network provides support and advice to projects

Disadvantages• Multiplicity of potential funding sources, not necessarily easy to identify• Funding does not cross national boundaries• Partners cannot necessarily start and finish at the same time• Technology transfer from Universities to industry not always supported• Co-ordinator cannot order partners only ask

Socio-economic impact of EUREKA

The EUREKA label awarded to the project is an internationally recognised seal of excellence, adding value by giving participants a competitive edge.

The results of EUREKA projects actively contribute to wellbeing, security, environment and employment in Europe – and beyond.

Making Europe successful

As markets globalise, the European economy has never been more dependent on innovation for its survival.

EUREKA, with its unique ability to react rapidly to market change, should be central in supporting this innovation and working towards the 3% Objective.

EUREKA in ERA

EUREKA is a tool for innovation and programme/mechanism for

transfer of technologies into market

BUT• a lack of political commitment of the Governments of many EUREKA member countries

• a lack of a significant national budget for EUREKA projects in many member countries
