The sublime pinnacle oftwelfth and thirteenthcentury art, Notre-DameCathedral symbolisesthe power of thebishops of Chartres andthe fervour of itspopulation in theMiddle Ages. Built anddecorated between1134 and 1260, nowregistered on the

UNESCO World Heritage List, it is the most complete and well-preserved example of gothic Cathedrals.After the fire of 1194, which destroyed the edifice, leaving onlythe crypt and part of the western facade intact, it took just thirtyyears for the hard-working teams of some 300 workmen torebuild the cathedral.

The main facade of the cathedral (west) has kept the Royal Portaland its large bays from the twelfth century together with thesouth steeple (right: 103 m) and the lower parts of the northtower. The rose window dates from the thirteenth century,whereas the new flamboyant style steeple (left: 112 m) was builtin the sixteenth century. These twosteeples – one of which is accessibleto visitors from the inside – captureour attention from the plain andcontinue to guide pilgrims today.The three portals of the Cathedral –to the west, the Royal Portal (1145-1170), to the north, the so-calledAlliance Portal (1220-1230) and tothe south, the so-called Churchportal (1220-1230) – allow thevisitor to admire the precision anddelicacy of the work of the sculptorsof Chartres, achieving near-perfectionin their details. The scenes portrayed reflectcontemporary Christian thought.They acted as “pictorial catechism”.On the Royal Portal, you will observe the delicacy of the Virginand Child (right-hand bay) and the purity of the face of Christ inmajesty (central bay). On the left-hand bay, the works of eachmonth offer a vision of daily life in the twelfth century.

THE PILGRIMAGES

Each year, the cathedra lwelcomes thousands pilgrimswho come to venerate Our Ladyof Chartres.

Throughout the year, pilgrimsfrom French as wel l a sfore ign (including Japanese)dioceses and parishes visit the cathedral. These pilgrimages areat times quite colourful, such as the annual mass in Tamil.Chartres is especially popular among student pilgrims. In thespring, thousands of believers and non-believers set off onCharles Péguy’s footprint. The pilgrimage to Our Lady ofChristianity the Monday of Pentecost also attracts a large crowd.

The Cathedral

Once inside the cathedral, you will besurprised by its proportions, some ofthe most impressive of Frenchcathedrals: 130.20 m long, a 16.40 mwide and 37.50 m high nave, the scaleof the chancel and the transept (64 mwide).As you move closer to the chancelthat has kept its finely chiselledRenaissance railings, you will walkover the black stones of thelabyrinth. A piece of the famous reliccalled the “Virgin Mary’s veil” isexhibited in the “Saint-Cœur deMarie” chapel (absidal chapel).Beneath the cathedral, the largest crypt in France is open tovisitors (access from the outside).

As a place of pilgrimageand meditation, acathedral of light and astone bible, Chartres isa unique introductionto the art and expressionof Western Christendombetween the twelfthand thirteenth century.

THE STAINED GLASSWINDOWS

Radiantly colourful, exceptionally expressive,there are 172 stained glass windows,covering a total 2,600 sq. m. They make upthe finest collection in Europe in terms oftheir age and beauty. A genuine picturebook, they illustrate the bible, the life of thesaints and bear the imprint of their donors,the heraldic arms of great families or work scenes representingthe guilds. They are the work of master stained glass makers in

the twelfth and thirteenth century. The mostancient stained glass windows, famous fortheir particular blue colour, date from thetwelfth century. In Chartres, the blue colouris omnipresent, but it’s especially the blue of“Notre-Dame-de-la-Belle-Verrière” thatattracts visitors from around the world. Thisradiant blue was arrived at by colouring thepâte-de-verre with cobalt oxide. Later, other,less expensive pigments would replace this

12th-century blue, known as“Chartres blue”.

THE LABYRINTHChartres Cathedral possesses amagnificent example of a churchlabyrinth. It is found on the floor ofthe nave and dates from sometimearound 1200. At certain timesduring the year, you can still see it asit was in the 13th century; it hasnever been the object of restorationwork. The labyrinth is circular in form and made up of flagstones fromthe quarries in Berchères enclosed by bands of black marble.The 261.5 m long pilgrimage path was walked by Middle Agepilgrims in prayer, thereby representing a symbolic pilgrimageto Jerusalem.

A top ranking listed safeguarded district ofFrance, the old town of Chartres covers 60hectares spreading from the Cathedral (upper

town) to the banks of the Eure (lower town). Very close to the Cathedral,on the Place de la Poissonnerie, stands one of the finest houses inChartres, the Maison du Saumon . This building, decorated withwooden sculptures, was built in the early sixteenth century. The Maisondu Saumon will offer, from this summer, exhibition and prestigiousevents. Below, the Rue des Ecuyers, lined with half-timbered houses,including one flanked by the Reine Berthe staircase (sixteenth century) ,paved and lit with suspended chain lanterns, takes visitors back to theMiddle Ages. On the other side of the Cathedral, at n° 29 rue Chantault,is the oldest house in Chartres dating back to the twelfth century. Rampsand staircases (called “tertres”) take you down to the lower town with itsstreet names reminiscent of the old medieval trades of Chartres. TheTertre Saint-Nicolas was the passage once used by water carriers.Humpback bridges, washhouses, watermills are the main features alongthe banks of the Eure. From here, you have an exceptional view of theupper town. In the pedestrian area,brought to life by shops andmarkets, the old town hasmaintained the lively andpicturesque charm of its medievalpast.

SAINT-PIERREThis former abbey church (eleventh-thirteenth century)is one of the finest gothic masterpieces. Very wellpreserved, its fourteenth century stained glass windows

illuminate the interior and makethis a remarkable edifice. Openfrom Monday to Friday: 2-4pm(subject to basic service).

SAINT-ANDRÉ Mostly dating back to the twelfth century,this collegial church has been converted intoan exhibition centre. Its chancel once restedon an arch straddling the Eure river, prolongedby another arch that crossed the street.

SAINT-AIGNANThis very old church, rebuilt in the sixteenth century, hasmagnificent sixteenth and seventeenth century stained glasswindows. Church open from 10am-noon, 2-5.30pm. Sunday 2-5pm(subject to basic service).

SAINT-BRICEFormer monastic church of Saint-Martin-au-Val (11th and 12th century:its elevated choir covers a crypt (with 4 tombs of bishops of Chartresdead in the 6th century). Open only during “Journées du Patrimoine”.

SAINT-JEAN-BAPTISTE On the plateau of the Rechèvres district, northwest of the town,this modern church features modern stained glass windows byMax Ingrand. The German priest, Franz Stock is buried here.Appointed chaplain in the Paris prisons in 1940, as of 1945, heled the “Séminaire des Barbelés” near Chartres, a home toGerman prisoners of war preparing for the priesthood.Church open on request - Tel. +33(0)2 37 21 59 08

SAINT-LAZAREThis church, located in Lèves, was rebuilt after the Second WorldWar, except for the bell tower. It is mainly remarkable for itsmodern stained glass windows: a glass paving covering 228sq.m,designed in 1956 by Gabriel Loire, a world famous masterglassworker in Chartres. THE ART OF STAINED GLASSBorn in the Middle Ages, the art of stained glass has elected Chartres its capital. The cathedral and churches in Chartres are home to a large number ofold and contemporary stained glass windows.Today, the art of stained glass window making is still very much alive, thanksto the many studios that restore old stained glass windows and design worksfor public buildings and private residences.Nowadays, master glass artists continue to innovate and use new tools and procedures (fusing, thermoforming or serigraphy...). Some of these studios are opento visitors to reveal the secrets of stained glass window making (see page 33).

There is also the “Centre International du Vitrail”, which offersa diverse, dynamic view of the art and techniques of stained-glass window-making (see page 9).Finally, the “Galerie du Vitrail”, a genuine stained glassantique dealer’s, offers an in-depth discovery of the art,through the exhibition and sale of old and contemporary stai-ned glass works along with a specialised bookshop (see page 41), which is unique in France (more than 400 listed

CHARTRES PATEFamous since the 18th century, Chartres Pâté is a pastry in theform of a pie filled essentially with game meat. Originally, itwas made using plovers and dotterels, birds that would passover Chartres during their migrations. When these birdsdisappeared, partridges and pheasants were used instead.

POULE AU POTHenry IV is reputed to have declared, "If God allows me to live, I will make sure thatthere is not a single labourer in my kingdom who does not have the means to enjoya boiled chicken on Sundays." The poule au pot, or "boiled chicken", eaten bypeasant families became popularly associated with the reign of Henry of Navarre,the only king to be have been crowned in Chartres Cathedral, on 27 February 1594.In memory of this event, certain restaurants in Chartres include a poule au pot ontheir menus, especially during the "Henry IV Weekend" (21st - 22nd February).

THE MACAROONOriginally invented in Venice during the Renaissance, the macaroon can now befound throughout France. Made from a paste of ground almonds, sugar and egg

whites, this delicious, round biscuit can be filled with variousflavours. Chartres' pastry chefs have developed, throughextensive research and tests, a recipe for making this dessertsoft and tender.

THE MENTCHIKOFFA sweet made of fine praline chocolate covered with Swissmeringue was created in 1893 at the time of the Franco-RussianAlliance. Today, many of Chartres' confectioners continue tomake this delicacy, much to the delight of gourmets with asweet tooth.

De kathedraal van Chartres, diegebouwd is tussen 1134 en 1260, iseen ware samenvatting van dekunst uit de 12de en de 13deeeuw. Tevens geeft zij dewilskracht en de geestdrift van detoenmalige bisschoppen enstadsbewoners weer. Zij is de

meest complete en best bewaarde van alle gotische kathedralen.Al in 1979 is zij dan ook door UNESCO op de lijst vanwerelderfgoed geplaatst.Chartres is sinds de middeleeuwen een vermaardebedevaartsplaats. Nog altijd is de relikwie van Maria’s sluier tezien, het cadeau van de keizer van Constantinopel aan Karel deGrote. Zijn kleinzoon, Karel de Kale, schonk deze relikwie in 876vervolgens aan de kathedraal.Als een van de grootste kathedralen in Europa is zij niet alleenberoemd om haar afmetingen, maar ook om haar prachtigebeeldhouwwerk en schitterende ramen. U vindt hier de rijkste enoudste collectie origineel gebrandschilderd glas van Frankrijk,met een oppervlak van meer dan 2600 m2. De 172 ramenvertellen bijbelse verhalen en heiligenlevens als stripverhalen.

Op een steenworp afstand van de kathedraal, in het CentreInternational du Vitrail, wordt door middel vantentoonstellingen, stages en lezingen debrandschilderkunst levend gehouden. Ookelders, in en om de stad, vindt men nogeen aantal ateliers waar glazeniers oudeglas-in-loodramen restaureren, maarvooral ook moderne werken creëren voorliefhebbers over de hele wereld.

Een wandeling door het oude stadsdeelleidt u via de tertres (nu vaak in de vormvan trappen) van de kathedraal omlaagnaar de rivier Eure. Op uw weg komt uinteressante gevels en vakwerkhuizen uitde middeleeuwen en de renaissance tegen, zoals La Maison duSaumon en l’Escalier de la Reine Berthe. U gaat overschilderachtige bruggetjes, door nauwe straatjes met oudehuizen en langs oude wasplaatsen die tot in de jaren zestigdienst hebben gedaan. De middeleeuwse Saint-Pierre kerk endie van Saint-Aignan uit de 16de eeuw zijn ook een bezoekwaard.Chartres heeft verder talrijke musea die een breed publiek

kunnen interesseren. In het Musée des Beaux Arts, vlak achterde kathedraal vindt u werken van schilders als Zubaran, Soutine

en Vlaminck. Er zijn zelfs een aantal kleine Nederlandse enVlaamse oude meesters. Daarnaast worden beeldhouwwerk,meubilair, oude muziekinstrumenten, email- en glascollectiestentoongesteld. Het Muséum des Sciences Naturelles et dePréhistoire is niet alleen een mooi gebouw, maar u vindt er ookeen grote collectie prehistorische voorwerpen en eententoonstelling van fossielen, geologische en vogelkundigeonderwerpen.Het Conservatoire de l’Agriculture (COMPA) is het grootstelandbouwkundig museum van Frankrijk, dat is ondergebracht ineen vroegere loods voor stoomlocomotieven. Het Musée del’Ecole (schoolmuseum) neemt u mee terug naar de eerste helftvan de 20ste eeuw: houten schoolbanken, land- enspellingkaarten, inktpotten, uniformen, enz. De Grenier del’Histoire in Lèves, biedt een reis door de geschiedenis, van detijd van Lodewijk de Heilige tot nu, via reconstructies en metvele authentieke voorwerpen en documenten. Het is ook zekerde moeite waard om het zonderlinge Maison Picassiette(Bordendief) te bezoeken. Dit is een eenvoudig arbeidershuisjedat tussen 1930 en 1962 door de eigenaar, Raymond Isidore,vanbinnen en vanbuiten geheel gedecoreerd werd metmozaïekwerk van porseleinen scherven.
