To renovate a historical bank building into a studio space.

The assignment for this project is to renovate the his-torical bank building that is currently used as studio space for RISD’s furniture department. The design goal for the project was to refurbish the space into a more engaging and exciting studio space for students with out touching the historical façade.

The site is located within the campus of Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. The building is cur-rently used as 3D store and studio space for furniture majors. The building has kept its unique historical façade over years.

Its marble Greek style façade amongst newly built brick buildings gives a feeling of imbalance. As one enters the building, the large and non-human scale of the columns contrasting with the modernistic studio spaces creates confusion in relating to the structure.

The back of the building is connected to an alleyway that leads students deeper inside to the RISD’s cam-pus. It is also adjacent to the student gathering space behind the Chase Center. The two very different characteristics of each entrance and the sense of illu-sion in the transition through the building intrigued my interest right away and lead me to the concept of ILLUSION.

The experience of illusion starts as one enters the building through the hallway with the low ceiling. After the narrow hallway, the building opens up all the way up to the fourth floor. Such a sudden and unexpected change of the space creates the sense of illusion.

The architecture here plays the role of transition from the downtown to the alleyway. The stacked up studio spaces of the front section represent the downtown, where all buildings are tall and orga-nized. The cubic studio space in the middle signifies the breaking down of this structure, and in the end, the space becomes simply platforms that carry the natural feeling of the alleyway.

To move a small and narrow Sushi Restaurant to a slightly wider and longer location with an atmosphere of a dreamlike forest.

The restaurant, Sushi Express, sells sushi and bubble tea. The building is currently located on Thayer Street in Providence, Rhode Island, where various restaurants and cafes are located. Because the street is at the core of a university town, it is filled with many college students.

Sushi Express is located on Thayer Street, Providence, Rhode Island, where many college students find places to eat, shop, and relax. Among these restau-rants and cafes, it is one of the smallest restaurants. People can barely move around in the store, and most people take bubble tea or sushi to go. The objective was to move this cafe to a bigger and longer shop called Details.

I wanted the sushi cafe to be a place where students can escape from reality and stress from school. It would be a place where they can relax and recharge.

Concept Study

When I think about relaxation, the first thing that comes to my mind is nature. Natural light through the branches of trees helps people meditate and relax. My first concept dealt mostly with natural light by using glass or openings on the ceiling and other elements of nature.

The cafe needed to provide different levels of relax-ation for different customers. Some people might come in to find a place to study, but at the same time, some might come in for light chats. Different kinds of seatings offer varying level of privacy.

To create a workroom for a scholar who studies the psychology of attraction by using insects as a model.

The client of this project is an imaginary scholar from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, and each student has to come up with the scholar’s field of study. Then students have to collect a mini-mum of twenty objects that their scholars are collect-ing. The design challenge was to create the scholar’s office / lab at the second floor of Fifteen Westminster Building in Downtown Providence.

The site is located on the second floor of Fifteen Westminster Building in Downtown Providence, Rhode Island. It has an historic façade, which students were not allow to change in their design. Originally, the building was used as a bank, and it was renovated to be used as a dormitory for students of Rhode Island School of Design. The first and sec-ond floor is used as a cafeteria and the school library. The room for the project is hidden in the corner of the second floor with three large windows - two arch shape windows and one rectangular window. However, not much natural light comes in due to the building in front of it.

For my scholar’s subject, I decided it to be a study of attraction by collecting lights and observing the insects that are attracted to the lights. Pictures on the left page are samples of his collection. His collection varies in shapes, sizes, and types of light bulbs.

Study of Attraction

If light is the medium that attracts insects, what is the medium that attracts human beings? Humans have five senses - hearing, sight, touch, smell and taste. Among these senses, what could be applied to the space? What medium would guide people to the direction that the scholar wants? What kind of method will stimulate the curiosity of humans? I concluded that the strongest attraction that can be applied in a space is sight and touch.

Because there was a restriction to the façade, at first I decided to use the remaining walls in the interior space. So, the space remained as it was with three separate rooms. I also wanted people to experience the same attraction that insects feel toward lights.

I considered the windows as the entrance for insects, and I wanted the space to open up when the scholar needed subjects(insects) for his experiments. As people walk through the narrow hallway, they also experience attraction. Dark hallway makes people walk towards the light coming out from the gaps of the doors.

Then, I introduced a new linear division across the room that divides the zone for insects and the zone for humans. Lights, one of the attraction sources, are attached near the glass in the division in the middle for insects. Other attraction sources such as maze, moving chair, and textured walls are also located in the middle for the attraction of humans.

As I developed the concept, I got intrigued by the idea of making humans inside the space be the sub-ject of the study as well. The human section of the site became more organic and even took the shape of an ant colony.

As the design proceeded towards the end, the shape got simpler and more interesting. The object that attracts both humans and insects turned into one sculptural furniture piece. The function of human’s side developed more methodically due to its func-tional qualities.

Designing a two-story residence for a family with six members.

The father of the family is a writer and a scholar working at Brown University, and the mother a painter who mostly studies and paints urban design. They have a fifteen-year-old girl Sally, a ten-year-old boy Alex, and five-year-old twin girls. The main goal of this project is to create a living space that defines the meaning of a family in a modern society and to find ways to connect the family members.

The site is located near the Kennedy Plaza, in Downtown Providence, Rhode Island. The building consists of two six-story-high towers at north and south end, and a two-story lobby space in the middle that connects the two towers. Previously, students were assigned to design a budget hotel on the South tower. This project dealt with the 5th and 6th floor of the tower facing north.

Today, family gatherings are infrequent, because each member desires more privacy. However, many psychologists still stress the importance of family gatherings. The residence should have elements that bind the family together while still providing the individual needs of each member. For such reasons, I wanted to create a residence with rooms that express strong characteristics of each member, and common areas that connect all the family members and bring their lives together.

Concept

The concept for the previous hotel project (south tower) was a beehive. A beehive is the most scientific and efficient house on Earth. The shape requires minimum amount of material use, and the material enhances its sanitation. The hexagonal shapes add excitement for the travelers.

The concept of a beehive continued for the residence on the opposite tower. The interlocking system of each module in the beehive remained, but the form changed into rectangular shapes in order to fit every-day life needs.

Each unit has a different shape, and the function determines the material of each unit. Sometimes space can be defined by the negative space that surrounding boxes create.

Every room is interlocked and connected by bath-rooms, and the common areas, such as the living room and the dinning room, are created by negative spaces that other boxes create.b

Development

A shared facility that needs easy access from every room is the bathroom. For such functional reason, bathrooms became the core piece that interlock every room.

The master bedroom is created where the couple’s individual workspace meet. When the different materials of their individual spaces merge together in the master bedroom, they create a special atmo-sphere.

The twins’ room is two-story-high, for when they grow up, it can be divide into two rooms. The room is close to the mother’s room, while Alex’s room is placed near the father’s room. More privacy is provided for the grown up teenager Sally.

To create a Student center by dividing a small Reception room into even smaller sections

The room was on the first floor of the Interior Archi-tecture Department Building in Haute École d’Art et de Design. It was used as a reception room of the building. The design goal of this project was to come up with programs that will improve the atmosphere of the school. The process of the design was inspired by a movie making method with storyboards.

The site is the Interior Architecture Department building in Haute École d’Art et de Design, Geneva, Switzerland. The assignment was to renovate the reception room of the building. The most special quality of the existing room was the reception window, allows the room to communicate with the rest of the building easily and connects students with faculties and guests.

The first step for the project was to write a scenario and make a storyboard. Each member of the group created a storyboard and we combined all of them together to come up with one concept. Each member cut out one scene from their storyboards and we combined them together to create a new story, which became dreamy and unrealistic in atmosphere. One of the idea was playing with different connections: blocking visual connection while sound is still travel-ing through the space and vise versa.

There are three openings in the room. First is the door that is used as an entrance, second is the window providing the outside view, and last is the reception door that connects the visitors from outside and the receptionist inside the room. I was intrigued by the different levels of connections that the room allowed to the outside. I wanted to increase the intensity of the different connections within the space. The room got divided into three spaces: invit-ing exterior, dinning room, and the dark room.

The concept from the storyboard was applied to the details. The Reception room got divided into three smaller units, and each room had a different level of connection with one another. The first unit, that is connected to the outside, has a door to the inside of the room. When the door is shut, there is only a visual connection between the outside and the inside. The second unit near the reception window has a more active connection with the third unit, the dark room, in the middle. The wall has an opening that allows sounds to travel between the second and third units.

The concept extended to the subdivision of the space. The small existing room got divided into even smaller spaces. The room was divided based on the function and the relation to the site. A garden was designed next to the window, so that the boundary between the interior and the exterior became unclear. A kitchen was to be located next to the reception window for people to communicate easily with the people entering the building. Nap room is located in the middle of the space, where the light and noise are minimized.

Expansion of Studio space on sixth floor of CIT building with cantilever structure.

The assignment for this project is to create an expansion of the current studio on the sixth floor of the CIT building in Providence, RI. The new space should seat 30 studio space, allow 25 sq ft per occupant, and be held by a cantilever structure or by a column that touches the parking lot adjacent to the building.

The CIT building is currently used as studio spaces for students in Downtown Providence. On the sixth floor of the CIT building, students were assigned to design an additional studio space by attaching a new structure on the outside. The specific restrictions were that the structure cannot rest on the roof of the neighboring building, but the support can touch the ground of the adjacent parking lot.

Applying new geometry into the rectangular site. The expansion is possibly supported by a column touching the adjacent parking lot.

Scheme

The floor structure of the new expansion will go into the existing building and merge with the original floor structure in order to support the expansion. The shape of expansion will be parallel to the CIT building.

The simple square expansion is supported by the two columns touching the parking lot.

The simple rectangular expansion that hangs on the side of the building wraps around the other side of the building.


My concept for the project was a Light Box. The studio is lit up all night by the students working at late hours. I wanted the expansion to show the active night life of the students and also become a light for the surrounding area in the dark.

The final design was the L-shape structure that is simply resting on top of existing building. The idea was to put the structure simply on top of the existing building by making the part that actually sits on top heavy with concrete.

However, because the structure of the extension does not need to support much weight, the concrete mass was later on changed with the panels of precast concrete with possibly glass fibre embedded.

한옥의 장점을 서울 도심 속에 적합하게 재해석한 진화된 한옥

우리 민족의 정서와 혼이 담긴 전통한옥의 장점을 현대의 미적 감각과 새로운 서울의 문화, 그리고 변화한 유저에 맞춰 재해석해낸 프로젝트로 소규모화된 가족싸이즈를 위한 구조와 함께 멀어지고 단절된 이웃간의 교류를 증진시킬 수 있는 디자인을 추구하였다.

전주한옥마을

무거운 기왓지붕의 끝에 살포시 드러난 우아한 곡선, 그런 지붕을 묵묵히 들어받치고 있는 나무기둥과 깨끗한 민족성을 드러내는 하얀 벽. 이것이 우리의 전통한옥을 생각하면 가장 보편적으로 떠올릴 이미지일 것이다. 하지만 오랜 역사를 우리 민족과 함께해온 한옥에는 이런 표면적인 아름다움보다 더 많은 지혜와 정서가 담겨있다. 여름에는 시원한 바람이 들문을 통해 집안 깊은곳까지 구석 구석 통해가고 겨울에는 따듯한 햇살이 방안 깊숙히 찾아오는, 자연과 함께 숨쉬는 자랑스러운 우리의 한옥은 안타깝게도 역사속의 한켠에만 자리하고 있는것이 현실이다. 살아야만 진정으로 알수있다는 한옥의 멋과 맛을 도심안에서도 느낄수 있기위해서는 어떠한 노력이 필요할까.

같은모양의 길쭉 길쭉한 콩크리트 아파트와는 달리 한옥은 그안에 사는 사람이 고스라니 드러나는 집이다. 실상 사람의 손맛을 강조하는 한옥은 합리적이고 효율성을 중요시 하는 현대적인 추세와는 거리가 먼 건축물일 것이다. 하지만 편리함 보다는 그러한 작은 불편함이 오히려 사람을 자연에 더 가까이 하게 하고, 그안에서 일상의 즐거움을 느끼며 정서적으로 풍족할 수 있도록 설계되어있다.

한옥이 사랑을 받아온 가장 큰 이유는 자연과의 소통때문일 것이다. 자연에서 온 재료를 가공하지 않은채 온전히 이용해 만들어진 한옥은 자연속의 일부처럼 스며들어 주변의 풍경과 조화를 이룬다. 굴곡진 나무를 깍아 반듯하게 만들기 보다는 그 모습 그대로 집을 지탱하도록 하고 벽을 발라 그위에 기왓장을 한장 한장 올려내야 비로서 완성된다. 대문을 지나, 마당을 건너 집안으로 들어와 마루에 앉았을때 바로 창을 통해 담아지는 마당의 풍경화가 또한 자연을 색다른 방법으로 즐기는 조상님들의 지혜이다. 한그루 한그루 옳은자리에 심어진 나무들은 집안에서 밖을 내다보는 관점에서 지어져 창밖의 풍경을 완벽하게 만들어 낸다.

1. 자연과의 교감과 소통

한옥은 늘 변화하는 집이다. 끈임없이 문이 열리고 닫히고 들리며 계절의 변화를 감추지않고 고스란히 담아낸다. 문살과 창호지를 통해 방안 깊숙히까지 들어오는 햇빛은 해가 떠서 질때까지 쉬지않고 그림자를 만들며 움직이고 여러 모양의 그림자는 하얀 벽에 포착되어 시시각각 새로운 그림을 만들어낸다. 여름에는 시원한 바람을 방안 깊숙히 들이기 위해 문을 들어올리고 겨울에는 창호지로 추위를 단단히 막아내기도 하지만 그 계절의 변화를 거스르기보단 느끼며 따뜻한 아랫목에 옹기종기 모여앉아 겨울을 이겨내게 만들기도 한다.

한옥의 기본적인 요소 중 하나는 통(flow)이다. 한옥에서는 모든것이 통한다. 방에서 방으로 사람들의 목소리와 바람이 흐르고 부엌에서 안채로 밥상이 오가며, 창문과 창문사이로 풍경이 통한다. 기본적인 한옥은 “ㄷ” 혹은 “ㅁ” 모양으로 이루어져 문을 통하여 방에서 방으로 연결이 된다. 이렇듯 통하는 구조의 집을 짓기 위해서 한 방이 간혹 네개에서 다섯개의 창문을 가지고 있기도 하는데, 이는 각방의 사생활(privacy)보다는 가족의 소통을 더욱 중요시 하였기 때문이다.

이러한 한옥의 구조는 자연스럽게 여러개의 문이 서로 겹치되 혼란스럽지는 않도록 존재하게 만들었다. 그러한 창과 문을 통해 창안에 또 다른 창을 담고 그안에 또 다른 창을 담아 자연을 다른 각도로 늘 새롭게 바라보게 하는 매력을 가지고 있다. 또한 한옥은 시각적으로만 밖과 소통하는 서양식 유리창과 다르게 다섯걸음 안에 안에서 밖으로 통하도록 창문이 배치되어있다.

3. 통, 바람이 흐르는 집


우리의 궁극적인 목표는 복잡한 서울 도심안에서 겉모습으로 드러난는 한옥이 아닌 그 안에서 생활하는 사람이 한옥의 정취를 느낄수 있는 건물을 만드는 것이다. 변화하는 사회에 전통계승만을 강요하는것이 아니라 새로운 각도에서의 해석을 해내는 것이다. 넓은 마당을 바라보며 사색과 여유를 즐겼던 예전의 삶과는 달리 현대의 도시의 모습은 높은 부동산 가격때문에 최소한의 공간에 최대한 많은 집을 짓고자 콩크리트 숲을 연상케 하는 빽빽한 아파트들로 가득하다. 현대인들에게 집이란 더이상 나를 표현하고 정서적으로 순화시켜주는 공간이 아닌, 최소한의 의식주만을 해결시켜주는 상자에 불과해 졌다. 빛과 바람의 흐름을 느끼고 이용하는 대신 인위적인 방법으로 자연에 맞서며 옹기종기 모여있는 집은 이웃과 이웃간의 교류를 되려 단절시키고 더 두꺼운 벽으로 서로를 막아서게 하였다. 이런 환경에서 전통한옥의 장점들을 재현시키기 위해서 많은 문제점에 부딛히게 되었다.

소통을 중시하는 한옥의 개성과 특색을 유지하는 동시에 빽빽한 도심속에서의 사생활 보호를 위해 낮은 형태의 담을 두었다.

일층은 일종의 대문역할을 하는 공간으로써 보안을 위한 경비실과 일 이인용 유닛이 이용할수 있는 세탁실이 위치한다.

동 마당을 두고 낮은 담을 둠으로써 이웃이 더욱 가까워지고 자연스럽게 서로를 더 열어놓을수 있도록 설계하였다.

반투명의 유리 천장을 둠으로써 햇볕이 좀더 집안 깊숙히 들어올 수 있도록 설계하였다.

집의 기둥이 연장되어 올라와 윗층의 바닥을 들어올리면서 생겨난 공간으로 바람이 지나고 볕이 통한다.

거실에 앉아 들문을 열어 올리고 마당을 통해 바라본 도심은 더이상 늘 바라보던 콩크리트 숲이 아닌 마당의 자연을 통해 들여다본 새로운 서울이 될것이다.

새로운 한옥은 단층이었던 전통한옥 대신 일 이인의 싱글족들을 위한 유닛과 사인가족을 대상으로한 다른 유닛이 서로 쌓아 올려진 modular 개념의 건물로 이루어진다.

일 이인을 대상으로한 원룸 형태의 구조로 이루어진 유닛으로 시각적으로 연결된 마루를 통해 이웃간의 친밀도를 높혀지는 모양을 하고 있다. 세개의 일인용 유닛이 한층에 자리잡은 구조에서는, 층 입구의 넓은 공동 마당을 통하여 서로의 교류를 더욱 증진시키려는데 목적이 있다. 집과 집사이에 통하는 구조를 유지하되 최대한의 사생활을 보호하기 위하여 낮은 담을 배치함으로써 시각적으로는 온전히 뚫리지 않은 구조일지라도 바람은 통할수 있도록 설계하였다.

Family Unit>

사인가족을 위한 위닌의 경우에는 마당을 통한 자연과의 교류를 최대화 하고 가족간의 소통 또한 증진시키기 위하여 들문으로 트인 넓은 거실과 함께 큰 마루를 배치하였다. 한 층을 한 가족이 이용한다는 장점을 살려 많은 들문을 들임으로써 원할경우 집 전체에 바람이 들고 소리가 흐를수 있는 설계를 하였다.

신한옥에서는 단층이었던 전통한옥대신 새로운 한옥은 일 이인의 싱글족들을 위한 유닛과 함께 사인가족을 대상으로한 다른 유닛을 쌓아올리는 modular 개념으로 만들어진다. 이곳에서 개인의 공간만큼이나 중요한 공동공간인 마당은 이웃간의 교류를 더욱 활발하게 해주며 우리민족의 정을 다시한번 느끼게 해줄수 있는 계기가 될것이다. 전통 한옥의 창과 문이 마당의 풍경과 바깥의 자연을 담는 프레임 이었다면, 도심속의 창은 푸른 마당을 통해 늘 바라보던 삭막한 도심을 다른 풍경으로 재해석 할수있는 캠버스가 될 수 있지 않을까. 이번 프로젝트를 통하여 우리의 한옥이 다시한번 우리의 생활 속에 깊숙히 자리잡을수있는 기회가 되었으면 하는 바램이다.
