Formula Student is Europe’s most established educational motorsport competition, run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The competition requires a team of university students to conceive, design and build a single seat racing vehicle optimised for performance in a number of static and dynamic events performed over the competition weekend. Alongside the engineering aspects of the project, teams also develop a business strategy and portfolio to show understanding of the financial and economic aspects of the project from an industrial perspective. Both the design concept and business strategy are then presented before a panel of expert judges during the competition.

ABOUTUS

Our team consists of highly talented and resourceful engineering students who took the initiative to enter our first competition in July 2015. We designed our car and produced a fully developed chassis within 8 months of conception, and placed 6th in our class.

We are aiming to establish a long lasting legacy of competitive entries from our university. We believe that this will provide one of the best opportunities for undergraduate students to gain invaluable experience and practical engineering knowledge. This will help aid the professional development for our students’ future in the engineering industry. This quality experience also increases the calibre of students attending the university, which makes it beneficial for employers taking on interns or graduates.

We will be competing in the ‘Class 1’ competition in 2016. This involves designing, manufacturing and racing a fully functional open-wheel race car around the Silverstone race circuit, against universities from across the world. We will need to update our designs to fit the new rules and regulations, finalise them for production and then test the behaviour of the car to ensure its reliability and safety.
