? YOU ARE BETTER-OFF WITH SCHOOLING

It is dis turb ing to come across young peo -ple par tic u larly, who ques tion the merit ofat tend ing school and of gain ing higher ac a -demic train ing as good in sur ance for abetter and re ward ing fu ture. The jus ti fi ca -tions put for ward are mostly mis guided orir rel e vant to the re al i ties of to day’s world. For the few scep tics, here are some re centsta tis tics (1998) from the OECD (Or gani -sa tion for Eco nomic Co-operation and De -vel op ment) which should be help ful to ed u -ca tors and to any one else fac ing thechal lenge.

1. Is it true that peo ple with ac a demictrain ing earn more?

True, for the ma jor ity of OECD coun -tries. Al though more ed u ca tion does notguar an tee higher sal a ries, there are manyother fac tors be sides ac a demic qual i fi ca -tions, which af fect re mu ner a tion. Av er agesal a ries in all OECD coun tries are sub stan -tially higher for those with more school ed -u ca tion than for those with less.

This is es pe cially no tice able for thosewith higher ed u ca tion. For ex am ple a 30 to40 year old with a uni ver sity de gree earns30 to 80 per cent more than any one whoonly com pleted sec ond ary school. In Por tu -gal the pre mium is 70 to 80 per cent. Thedif fer ence in earn ings is more pro nouncedwith age, and in most coun tries the high estpre mium is reached around the age of 50.

For those with no de gree the dif fer ence in

earn ings also de pends on how high they’vead vanced in their ca reer.

Half way through a ca reer, lack of sec ond -ary ed u ca tion rep re sents on av er age be -tween 10 and 40 per cent lower earn ingsthan with sec ond ary ed u ca tion com pleted.

2. Does higher ed u ca tion guar an teehigher em ploy ment op por tu nity?

For young peo ple who have ex pe ri enceddif fi culty in ob tain ing em ploy ment this isim por tant. Sta tis tics clearly show thathigher ed u ca tion leads to better em ploy -ment op por tu nity through out the OECD,al though Por tu gal was an ex cep tion. In1996 for nearly all OECD coun tries and be -tween the ages of 20 and 24, 15 per cent ofyoung peo ple with sec ond ary ed u ca tion re -mained un em ployed, ver sus 21 per cent ofthose with no sec ond ary ed u ca tion. Por tu -gal was again the ex cep tion due to its lessde vel oped skills mar ket. Nev er the less, inPor tu gal, there was a greater ad van tage forthose who com pleted sec ond ary ed u ca tionagainst those who have n’t.

It is ex pected that the rapid de vel op mentof tech nol ogy parks and lead ing-edge man -u fac tur ing in dus tries in Por tu gal will soonshift the skills mar ket needs to wards thoseof the more ad vanced coun tries which in -clude Can ada

Carlos Laborde-Basto, Di rec tor

sors” e voluntários, e à CIRV Ra dio, me dia spon sor e HockleyVal ley Re sort.

Investigou, a pedido do Ministério daJustiça, a descriminação ra cial e sex ual nosistema jurídico do Ontário para umtrabalho teatral e educativo.

? SEGUROS & INVESTMENTOS

Le ver age Life In sur ance – O que é?
