From the Pastor

Dear Friends,

We have in today’s gospel the core of Jesus’ message: the beatitudes. The beatitudes are the equivalent of the Ten Com-mandments of the Old Testament. Yet, it is truly amazing that most Christians consider the Ten Commandments as the core of Christian living. Most of us tend to pay lip service to the beatitudes and easily gravitate towards the commandments. In my opinion there are at least two reasons why we do this. The first one is because we find the commandments easier to follow and much less demanding. A person can fulfill the commandments perfectly without doing much. If I lock my-self in my house and I do not have much contact or relation-ships with others I can fulfill the commandments. Of course, this is not the spirit of the commandments, but for many Christians this is what Christianity is about: keeping laws, but not necessarily entering into loving relationships. The second reason is that the beatitudes have been greatly misunderstood and applied. The beatitudes are given by Jesus in the context of God’s Kingdom. It is the experience of being swept, touched and taken by the Kingdom that produces what the beatitudes pro-mote. The beatitudes are not laws to be kept, but rather atti-tudes to be cultivated in order to live as a citizen of God’s Kingdom. When the beatitudes are seen purely as laws they tend to create frustration and guilt for not measuring up to them. In the first beatitude Jesus is not saying that the poor are blessed simply because they are poor, as if poverty is some-thing that God desires and praises. Rather, what Jesus is say-ing is that in spite of my poverty I am blessed because the Kingdom has come upon me. In spite of my poverty of spirit and otherwise I find myself loved, accepted and forgiven be-cause God’s Kingdom has touched my life and revealed to me how God looks upon me. Poverty of spirit is the recognition that I am in need to be connected to all. The opposite of pov-erty of spirit is the illusion of the self-sufficient and self-assertive person that the world so much admires who fails to see the connection to others and who fails to bow before God. The second beatitude is closely connected to the first and these two are the foundation of the rest of them. “Blessed are they who mourn” refers to a particular kind of mourning. It is the mourning that comes from awakening to our spiritual des-titution and all that separates me from God and others. It is the mourning over the morality in which I boasted and the self-righteousness on which I built my life. It is the mourning over my rebelliousness against God; the rejection of His will. It is the mourning over my poverty of spirit. This is the awak-ening to the reality that I am intimately connected to the God who in love creates me, sustains me and calls me to Himself. This is the irruption of God’s Kingdom into my life, family, society and world.

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF

Queridos Amigos,

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

“Be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deluding yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his own face in a mirror. He sees himself, then goes off and promptly forgets what he looked like. But the one who perseveres, and is not a hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, such a one shall be blessed in what he does.” James 1:22-23, 25b

LISTENING AND DOING, BOTH ARE REQUIRED TO FOLLOW GOD

These verses from Epistle of James are just as challenging today as they were two thousand years ago. Simply hearing God’s word – something most of us do every Sunday – is not sufficient. Unless we have been impelled to reach out into the world in new ways, God’s word, and our faith itself, becomes just a dead letter. As. St. James noted, our outreach and our striving to make a difference in the world is evidence of the depth of our faith in Christ. There are many ways to make a difference in the world, but for me one of the most important right now is peace. With children being slaughtered or forced to be soldiers or sold into slavery, families torn asunder and countries and historical landmarks destroyed daily, I cannot imagine a more important way of following Christ. Peace, as Archbishop Blasé Cupich of Chicago stated, is at the heart of the Gospel, and is always an active undertaking. “Peace,” he said, “is not a state of being but rather something that is to be made, to be done. It is a dynamic reality. For God, peace is more a verb than a noun.” So if we are to truly hear God’s word, we must take action and make verbs out of nouns. Love is not just an emotion, it is an action. Hope is not just something we feel but something we create in others. How are you hearing God’s word, and how are you “doing” it?

FAITH FORMATION NEWS

Confirmation 1 Retreat NOT completed! Please contin-ue to pray for our year 1 confirmation teens. Their retreat was cancelled four hours before leaving because of the tor-rential rain and flooding. And because we have to turn in bulletin articles early I wrote that the retreat was over because it would have been. But we are all safe and the wonderful thing we discovered is just how much the teens are looking forward to their weekend retreat, they were so disappointed in the delay. May they continue to burn with the fire of the Holy Spirit and continue to be excited for the time away with God to come.

As part of their Junior International Baccalaure-ate History course, the IBDP Cohort 2 studies a unit focused on Civil Rights. This week, they were given an opportunity to hear Donzaleigh Abernathy speak about “An Inside View of the Civil Rights Movement” at the Ramona Leader-ship Symposium. Ms. Abernathy, daughter of Reverend Ralph Abernathy shared her father’s role as a Civil Rights Leader alongside Dr. Mar-tin Luther King, Jr. The students resonated with the presentation as they saw a connection to what they are currently learning in their classroom.
