Today a second collection will be taken during all the Masses. A portion of the money will be used to paint the entry doors and cement benches in front of the Chapel of the Annunciation. It will include some detail work as well. The funds we have been saving over the past few years will enable us to pave the parking lot a long over-due project that will enhance the appearance of our churches and improve the flow of traffic. We are hopeful that the work can be completed within the year. We could not have imagined accomplishing this task without your financial support. A heartfelt thanks to all who continue to donate to Renovate and Celebrate.

    RENOVAR Y CELEBRAR

    P. Tony Diaz, CMF Parroco

This second Sunday of Easter is dedicated to the Divine Mercy. As church why would we need to emphasize Gods mercy and com-passion? Is it not that obvious that these are two of the main attributes of God? As Church is this not the main witness that we give as a community of faith: a community of mercy and compassion? When by the grace of God I am made aware of my sinfulness do I feel compelled to seek the church or to stay away from it? Are sinners attracted to us or feel rejected by us? The answers to these questions are not as clear cut as we would like them to be. We can point to many examples affirming mercy and compassion as well as many examples of condemnation and rejection. But as an institution I fear that the answer to these questions is not too encouraging. One particular detail about Jesus in the gospels is that he was surrounded and followed by sinners. They did not feel condemned nor rejected by him. Jesus did not accuse or shamed them with their sinfulness. Neither did he excuse their sinfulness. Yet, it was Jesus mercy and compassion that won them over. He received sinners into his company; he ate with them and even allowed them to become his disci-ples and apostles. With mercy and compassion is how Jesus related to others, especially the most wounded and broken among them. In this, Jesus mirrors the mercy and compas-sion of God. He even commands his listeners to imitate God: Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. (Luke 6:36). What is the major attribute of God that holds you in the relationship with Him? Is there an attribute of God that keeps you away from God? We know from the gospels that it was not holiness that drove people away from God or Jesus, but rather self-righteousness, judgment and condemnation. It was the self-righteousness, judgment and condemnation of those who spoke in the name of God and Jesus that drove and continue to drive the sinner away. There is a great temptation to turn Christianity into an exclusive membership club where only the few elected and self-righteous ones are allowed and accepted. In Jesus we have received the command to be an inclusive community that welcomes the sinner, the broken and the wounded. In Jesus God reconciled the world to him-self. This is the main ministry of Church: to reconciled Gods sons and daughters with God, with each other and with themselves. Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. This command to forgive is not limited to the sacrament of reconciliation, it is a command for all the bap-tized. How do we fulfill this ministry as a community of faith: Through mercy and compassion not through self-righteousness, judgment and condemnation?

Faith Formation Corner What does the Resurrection mean for us? Jesus Resurrection the most important event in human history- is how we know that what He said and did while on earth is true and that His promises to us are trustwor-thy. During His public ministry, Jesus spoke and acted as God. He promised that if we follow Him, we will have eternal life. Either He was God and had the power to make it true, or He was a mere man claiming to be some-one He wasnt. That Jesus rose from the dead a fact verified by more than 500 eyewitness accounts means that His word can be trusted. He warned of the specifics if His own death, predicted His Resurrection, and proved that He really is God. Therefore, His promises of eternal life are real, too. The Resurrection gives us hope. By His death, Christ liberates us from sin; by His Resurrec-tion, He opens for us the way to a new life (Catechism of the Catholic Church # 654). All those who die in Gods friendship will live with Him forever!

San Gabriel Mission Elementary School Girl Scout Troop 8451 Share Their Talents And Compassion for Gods Creatures

Congratulations to Troop 8451 for earning their Girl Scout Bronze award. The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. The Troop spent hours preparing and making 48 large dog bandannas, 54 small dog bandannas, 48 tennis ball/sock dog toys, 96 water bottle/sock toys, and 16 batches of home made dog treats that they delivered to a local animal shelter. What a wonderful way to show kindness to God's creatures that find themselves in shelters, awaiting families to adopt them.
