WE ARE HIRIING

The San Gabriel Mission is currently looking for a new Worship Coordinator to work under the supervision of the Pastor and directly with the Worship Committee as well as the Ministries of the Church to help develop, coordinate and implement a Parish Worship Program. Candidates must be bilingual (English/Spanish.) Candidates should also be able to communicate effectively, have basic computer knowledge and be familiar with the Catholic Church Liturgical Calen-dar (previous Rectory office knowledge is preferred.) This is a part time position and consists of 20 hours per week, with most hours being dedicated to the weekend liturgies. If you are interested, you may leave your resume in the Rectory Office for Joana or you can email her at: joanaa @ sangabri-elmission.org.

Together in Mission Campaign Launch “Be the Light of Christ”

Next weekend, the Together in Mission annual appeal will launch. This is a great opportunity to put your love into action. At every Mass we will hear from our priests that will tell us about the importance of sharing our gifts with others. We are in this together—the mission of help-ing our fellow brothers and sisters and we are all asked to share the light of Christ with others. For those of you that have made gifts in the past, be on the lookout for a spe-cial mailing from our Archdiocesan leaders asking you to renew your gift.

Please mail in your gift directly to the Together in Mis-sion office to ensure that you’re counted among those that have answered this vital call. Our parish has been tasked with raising OUR PARISH GOAL I am confident that each of you will prayerfully consider sharing the abundant gifts that God has shared with each of us.

Renovate and Celebrate

Our monthly second collection for Renovate and Celebrate will take place this weekend. The past improvements and updates to our historic Mission and Chapel of the Annunciation have been made possible because of your generous offerings. February is the month of love. A reflection of the love you have for your place of worship is obvious in your continued support of our grassroots campaign. For that we are grateful. We thank you and ask God’s blessings on you and your loved ones.

Renovar y Celebrar

From the Pastor

Dear Friends,

In order to appreciate today’s gospel we need to under-stand from where it comes from. The gospel of Matthew is the most Jewish of the 4 gospels. It strives hard to connect the law and the prophets with Jesus. Even the way the gos-pel is structured (5 clearly divided discourses of Jesus) makes reference to the Pentateuch, the first 5 books of the Old Testament. Jesus is presented as the fulfillment of the law and the prophets. The gospel was written for a Jewish/Christian audience who could appreciate the connection of the Old Testament to Jesus. Jesus, therefore, did not come to abolish the law or the prophets, but to fulfill them. Jesus is not a breakaway from Jewish traditions nor a new reli-gion, but a natural development of the story salvation which culminates in him. We can clearly sense that the gospel of Matthew is answering a very specific question from the Jew-ish/Christian community: how is Jesus the fulfillment of the law and the prophets? While Jesus does not abolish the law and the prophets, he does, however, take them beyond the literal interpretation to a foundation in love. Jesus takes the law and the prophets from an understanding as a contract to that of a loving rela-tionship with God. In doing this Jesus does away with the legalism into which Judaism had fallen into to reveal to us that at the core of salvation history are God’s love, mercy, compassion and justice. The life of Jesus is the revelation of God’s love, mercy and compassion. He models a life of intimacy, trust and submission to God, based not on obliga-tion or law, but on love. In broad strokes the difference be-tween the God of the Pharisees and scribes, and the God of Jesus is the difference between law and love. While law is practical and useful as a guide, love is the source of life and that which gives meaning to our relationships, commitments and sacrifices. We may think that with Jesus Christianity has done away with the Pharisaic tendencies, but we would be wrong. The Pharisees represented legalistic and static notions and atti-tudes in reducing God to laws and commandments. These Pharisaic notions and attitudes are still quite alive in Christi-anity today. Jesus in today’s gospel warns us, “unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” In the four ex-amples that today’s gospel gives us Jesus takes us from the mere rule of law to the heart of the God’s kingdom: loving relationship. Murder, adultery, divorce and false oaths begin in the heart, in the conscience, of the individual; the sinful actions follow from the heart. Christian faith as is modeled by Jesus is not merely the management or avoiding of sin, but rather the management and living of love. As St. Augustin rightly summarize, “love and do what you want”; meaning all that we do (or not do), think, say, and cultivate in ourselves must flow from love.

Fr. Tony Diaz, CMF Pastor

Queridos Amigos,

FAITH FORMATION CORNER – THOUGHTS TO PONDER, WAYS TO LIVE

“Though we ae incomplete, God loves us completely. Though we are imperfect, He loves us perfectly. Though we may feel lost and without compass, God’s love encom-passes us completely.” -Dieter F. Uchtdorf

How deep is the Father’s love for us?

God surely listens, understands and knows the hopes and fears you keep in your heart. For when you trust in His love, miracles happen! Know that you are not alone. God is with you, holding you, comforting you and most of all loving you no matter what. It is not by chance that you awake each morning; God woke you up because you are loved, and have a purpose. Always remember, no matter how softly you whisper a prayer, God surely listens, understands and knows the fears you keep in your hearts…and when you trust Him, miracles happen. May every day be filled with love, under-standing and contentment as you journey through life with those you hold dear, never forgetting how deep the Father’s love for us.

SGMHS IB Diploma Candidate Senior Yolanda Sanchez speaks on Climate Change

Senior Yolanda Sanchez who has volunteered at the Aquarium of the Pacific for seven years spoke about climate change and the ef-fects it has on animal life. She reminded everyone that they have power with the personal choices they make.

The information presented got the audience motivated and ready to help the cause. In following with Pope Francis’ leadership, stu-dents signed up to volunteer to “adopt an ocean” which entails do-ing a clean-up day 3 times a year. The ocean is important source of food; as over 1 billion people depend upon fish as their primary source of protein. The more people become aware of how they are contributing to the problem, the better the environment will be. The students, faculty and staff all learned that they can “be the solution to ocean pollution.”
