Welcome to Glasgow

• Many thanks to Dino Jaroszynski who has enthusiastically accepted to host us and to Gregory Vieux for the perfect local organization.

• And of course to Valérie Brunner for the long-distance organization. Valérie has replaced Julia (on maternity leave) as EuCARD2 assistant from January 2017.

• This meeting will give us a chance to make a move in the direction of plasma acceleration and visit SCAPA, the Scottish Center for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators.

• With 87 registered participants, is well in line with the attendance of the last 3 meetings (82 participants in Malta, 85 in Barcelona, from 115 at the first meeting in Hamburg).

Geology’• The theory of electromagnetism: James Clerk Maxwell (1831–

1879)• The discovery of the Composition of Saturn's Rings James Clerk

Maxwell (1859): determined the rings of Saturn were composed of small particles, all independently orbiting the planet.

• The Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution by James Clerk Maxwell(1860): the basis of the kinetic theory of gases.

• The first theory of the Higgs boson by English born Peter Higgsparticle-physics theorist at the University of Edinburgh (1964).

With significant input from Scottish physicists and astrophysicists gravitational waves from binary black holes coalescing were detected last year after more than 45 years of searching, thus opening a new field of astronomy. One of the most famous physicists to work in Scotland was William Thomson, Lord Kelvin, and as will be discussed in this talk it is quite amazing the extent to which his opinions in many areas turned out to be very relevant to the development of the experimental gravitational wave field.

Scientific Advisory Committee

We welcome the presence of two members of our Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), Caterina Biscari and Akira Yamamoto. (because of an important meeting, C. Biscari will join on Wednesday)

For this final meeting, we don’t need to follow our usual mandate; monitoring is done and strategic decisions are taken… Instead, we need your help for the final reporting. Please help us to identify (if possible, by WP):

1. The main scientific and technical results (of the WP) 2. The potential impact of the WP (on science,

technology, society).

The SAC has accompanied us during 4 years and has contributed to the good reputation of the project in particular for the successful of the Mid-Term Review of May 2015

The problem is that the SAC has only 1.5 hours (Thursday, 10:30-12:00) but you can decide to skip the visit of SCAPA or the seminar on Thursday morning, or to meet before the Banquet)

Accelerator science in the XXIst century: the paradox?

9Updated Livingstone-type chart (Wikipedia2014, uploaded by J.Nash, Imperial College)

Are we coming to a saturation? But the field has never been so flourishing…

TIARA, Need for Accelerator Scientists report, 2013: 3’700 people engaged in accelerator science in European researchinstitutes, number expected to grow by 18% in 5 years.

International Particle Accelerator Conferences are growing to a significant size: 1’200-1’300 participants every year, one of the largest scientific conferences !

Accelerators in transition

A paradox? No, accelerators are in full transition from fundamental science to applied science and societal applications.

Basic science

Applied science (photon and neutron sources)

Societal applications (medicine, industry, environment, etc.)

1% of accelerators

5% of accelerators94% of accelerators

Limitations related to size, cost, energy consumption, operability, reliability.

New ideas and technologies

The EuCARD-2 mission consists in identifying and promoting new

technologies to support this 2-way transition process

Mission accomplished?

EuCARD-2 in its 4-year activity has completed its exploratory work of:

- Analysing options to overcome the limitations of large accelerators.

- Creating and exploiting synergies between accelerators for basic and applied science.

- Identify promising fields for application of accelerators to society. APAE Final

ARIES Sustainability

ARIES will define in collaboration with TIARA a strategy and roadmap for future support of accelerator RI involving new EC instruments, industries, national agencies, and individual laboratories.

ARIES will develop human potential in accelerator science and related technologies with a strong WP on training and outreach.

ARIES will be the 4th and last Integrating Activity for Accelerators. The EC wants to change funding schemes for super-advanced communities and we are already taking part in the discussions on the future funding programmes.
