JOHN’S TIP OF THE MONTH:

The Wellness Letter from the University of Califor-nia, Berkeley advises: Ounce for ounce, green pep-pers have three times as much vitamin C as oranges. Red and yellow peppers have twice as much vitamin C as green ones: a whopping 170 milligrams in 3 ounces. Green peppers also supply some beta caro-tene, but the amount increases greatly as a pepper matures and turns red or yellow. Moral: Chose colorful peppers!

Municipal Agent Notes By John Sullivan

Keeping Sharp As We Age

Richard Isaacson, MD, a neurologist, is the founder of the Alzheimer’s Prevention Clinic at New York’s Weill Cornell Medical Center. He says, “In medical school I was taught that dementia just starts one day. Today we know differently .” Harvard neurologist Reisa Sperling, MD says, “Alzheimer's is finally joining the list of dis-eases we can have an early effect on.” It all comes down to changing how we live. Using these risk-reduction strategies recommended by Dr. Isaacson, you have a better-than 50% chance of avoiding Alzheimer’s. 1. Get basic blood tests to learn readings of Cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, blood glucose and homocyste-ine. Also, get readings of blood pressure, body-mass index, and waist circumference. 2. Take the 15 minute SAGE cognitive test of thinking skills-available at alzu.org. 3. Hang on to your muscle. If you don't work out regularly, you lose 1 percent of muscle mass per year. 4. Maintain healthy weight. 5. Almost every brain benefits from a plant-heavy diet (veggies, beans, whole grains, nuts, seeds) with lean protein-especially fish-and low fat (grass fed) dairy and meat. 6. It helps to eat fatty fish-salmon, tuna, mackerel, lake trout and sardines. Fish is truly brain food. 7. Try to skip late night eating-at least a few times a week. 8. Shoot for at least 8 hours of sleep. At least 45 minutes before bedtime-stop tex-ting, checking email, and watching TV. 9. Balance stress with downtime activities like yoga, acupuncture and regular vacations. 10. Challenge and relax your brain! Learn new things via hobbies and friendships. 11. Head off tooth and gum problems by regular visits to a dentist and avoid social isolation by seeing treat-ment for vision and hearing loss. 12. There’s a growing body of evidence that music benefits the brain, calms stress and helps when you exercise but singing or play-ing an instrument is even better. Dr. Isaacson himself has even joined a band. 13. Don’t smoke. Everybody knows that!

Best Regards, John

Dear Readers,

Here we are 6 months into the year already! Time flies when we’re having fun, and I hope all my readers are doing just that, with such beauti-ful days! It’s been warm and sunny, flowers blooming, birds chirping , squirrels dashing up and down trees, bees buzzing, worms crawling, and dandelions all over the place, and boy have I been sneezing!!! I come to the Center on Tues-days now, somehow Mondays seemed to be a bad day for me. Tuesdays are much more fun be-cause we have two new visitors on those days who bring a lot of laughs and jokes to our table of four. These two guys, age 70 and 90 just re-cently started coming , (it’s a nephew and uncle team) and boy do they help!. They make it fun for all of the seniors by helping with their needs and doing so brings a smile and love to all of them. He is a great person and doesn't even realize it or aware of it. He is my hero for “Fathers Day” this year, Mr. Joseph Marinone a former teacher in our Windsor Locks school system, retired and one GREAT person. “Happy Fathers Day” to all Dads, Grand-Dads, Uncles, Godfathers, Step-dads, or anyone I missed. Love to you all, Mary Ann Giannelli P.S. Think of 3 things you are thankful for each day! In my August article I will give you my 3 things I am thankful for !

MORE ABOUT MEDICARE CARDS

For those eligible, new Medicare cards, with a newly issued number, will be mailed after this month. The new number, which is in place of your Social Securi-ty Number, is aimed at helping prevent fraud and identity theft. When you receive the card you should destroy your old Medicare card. Also, if you’re in a Medicare Advantage plan, the Medicare Advantage plan ID card is your main card for Medicare. Always have this and/or your new Medicare Card available whenever you need care.

FEATURE CORNER

Stop in the center and visit our ‘FEATURE CORNER’ located at the end of the hallway. This month’s feature:

‘COMFORT KEEPERS ‘
