Etsy 101:When most marketers first look at ETSY, they tend to evaluate it in comparison toEbay. This is a mistake. Etsy can be very profitable. But it's a different kind of animal than Ebay. ETSY has different demographics (more women than men), and its buyers have a somewhat different psychology (which works to our advantage!).

Unlike Ebay where buyers are looking for a “bargain” price, ETSY buyers are looking for exciting and unique products! Price is secondary! ETSY's biggest advantage is that buyers SPEND LOTS of money there – They are not “bargain hunters”.

I've often made ETSY sales WITHOUT having the “lowest price”.

Granted, your prices still have to be in the ball park, but you DON'T have to have “rock bottom” prices like on Ebay. It's also much easier to get your items noticed on ETSY than on Ebay!

Here's the scoop on ETSY... Unlike Ebay, Etsy offers products in only three (3) major categories...

1) Handmade Art (or Crafts)2) Vintage Items (over 20 years old)3) Art/Craft supplies

Your Poster Prints would fall under the 1st category (or possibly the second).

ETSY is FREE to join and it is a very newbie friendly site. ETSY offers lots of online help and support for its sellers and buyers alike. ETSY, unlike Ebay (which in my opinion tends to discriminate against new sellers), makes it easy for new sellers to enter the ETSY marketplace profitably.

So why do some sellers on ETSY make few or zero sales where others make thousands of sales?? ...Research! (plus this guide!!).

Here are some common causes of low to zero sales (which this guide will show you how to avoid!)....

– Choosing the wrong niche – We already know posters are popular on ETSY (as we'll see in the next section shortly).

– Choosing the wrong products – Again we already KNOW posters are popularon ETSY.

– Choosing the wrong keywords – Later we'll show a method whereby you can get ETSY to tell you the best keywords to use!

– Creating listings that fail to inspire or persuade – Later we'll show you a simple way to easily write AWESOME listings.

– Poor photos – Since our posters are created from excellent high quality digital prints, this is NOT a problem for us!

ETSY also lends itself perfectly to the arts, prints, and posters niche(s) and there are many many popular sub-niches within these main niches (this guide will showyou how to find them!).

Posters of many kinds remain highly sought after on ETSY and there are many popular poster niches where people are doing tons of sales. Also, because your posters are unique to YOU, you can get your share of this huge passionate ETSY market much faster and easier than on Ebay!

A Couple Examples Of Great Poster Niches On ETSY:What you'll find on ETSY is that “posters” are not always listed as “posters”. Manyare listed as “prints”, “art” and/or “wall art”. ALL OF THESE phrases are worth checking out when you want to find successful poster niches on ETSY (we'll have more detail on how to find good niches in a bit, but first let's get an overview).

You can use ETSY's 'search suggestions' to identify sub niches in each main niche.For example, I went to ETSY's site...WAIT! Did you sign up yet? It's QUICK & FREE! here's that link again: YES I WANT MY 40 FREE LISTINGS!...SIGN UP NOW...I'll wait...

OK so I went to ETSY's site and entered “poster”. Look at all the search suggestions!

Some of the ones that jump out at me are “movie poster” (yes there are oodles of vintage public domain movie posters out there!), “travel poster”, and “world map poster”. Even “quote posters” shows up! How easy would those be to make?!

The KEY is to realize that ETSY's search suggestions are based on what buyers are searching MOST. In other words, ETSY is telling us which KW phrases are

BEST! We'll dive deeper into 1 or 2 of these sub niches in a bit but first, let's look what happens when we enter “Print”.

Many of the suggestions don't apply to us but there are a few gems. Unique or vintage “botanical prints” are very popular on ETSY. You also have “art print” and “wall art prints” whose searches will undoubtedly reveal even MORE poster sub-niches...

Look at what happens when we enter “print f” (as in 'print for')...

Lots of good stuff there! HINT: At this point you may want to start a 'keyword phrase swipe file' so later when you are entering your listing, you'll have a good

list of keywords for your listing titles and descriptions!

ASIDE: We'll go into more detail on KW phrases a bit later but for now just remember that longer KW phrases tend to have much less competition than shortones.

Another way you can search a niche more exhaustively is to start with a main keyword and run through the alphabet. For example...

“poster a”

“poster b”

“poster c”

to

“poster z” and see what suggestions pop up.

Speaking of “Alphabet” I tried “alphabet p” and BOTH ' alphabet print' and 'alphabet poster' came up in the search suggestions...

So I searched “alphabet poster” and got the following listings results page (ref below).

Now here's where we start to explore a niche...

How To Find Good Niches On ETSY:From a results page like the one above, I like to NEXT look for listings (posters in this case) that catch my eye, right click on them, and select 'open in a new tab'. By 'opening each listing in a new tab' I can look at lots of listings without losing my original search page.

Let's look at an example listing from the above and I'll show you what to look for...In this case, it's the 1st listing on the search page above (upper left in previous screen shot)... Here's the listing...

This is a 12” x 16” print and it sells for $42.75 ($36.00 + $6.75 shipping). Sweet!

You can see the ETSY shop name in the upper left corner and clicking on the name brings you to the shop offering the listing (ref screen shot below).

The first thing I look at is how long the shop has been open and the sales to date.You can see this at the top under the shop name. We see that the shop has been open since 2009, and they have 4,642 sales to date (at the time of this writing).

Now we can do a rough figure in our head... 4,642 sales in ~7 years = roughly 660 sales per year...or 55 sales a month (~2 sales a day). Prices range from $6.50 to $55.00...So, although it's hard to be exact, this shop is making some good cash (probable $1K+ per month net profit).

However, this is likely a very conservative figure because it assumes the shop sales were flat for the whole 7 years...Likely shop sales have grown over the years from zero to present so that CURRENT sales are much higher than “averagelifetime sales”...so maybe we're talking a more realistic estimate of $2k per month OR MORE net profit (we'll see in a moment how to get a better idea of a shops success and specifically which items are selling best).

You'll see many shops that have low to no sales...disregard those...Pay attention to what SUCCESSFUL shops are doing and what niches they are experiencing success in. Note which KW phrases they are using and what is enticing about their products and descriptions.

Assuming the shop is doing good sales, I like to scroll down and look at what categories of items they are selling and how many 'admirers' they have.

NEXT, click on the sales link (at the bottom, left just above 'admirers' in the screen shot above) and you get a list of items sold! (ref screen shot below).

REMEMBER the original listing that brought us to this shop? (The WOODLAND Forest Alphabet Poster). Well just on the first 24 sales results, FOUR of the sales were this $42.75 poster!

We also see that the mermaid poster is very very popular too!

Here's another example... I was searching through the “quote prints” / “quote posters” niche and found this shop...

Opened in 2014, and has 2,744 sales to date selling simple QUOTE posters! That's ~ 100 sales a month! (again probably much higher because current salesare likely higher than “average” sales).

Again we are seeing repeat sales on certain popular posters...It's funny how the ones selling the best are the simplest!

From successful sites like these, you would want to (as said) start building a KW swipe file (for your niche). Concentrate on longer KW phrases that still showed upin ETSY's search suggestions. You might also want to start building a swipe file forenticing descriptions. You NEVER want to “copy” someone directly, but you can get ideas and rewrite into your own descriptions.

Here's another example where I searched “vintage movie posters”...

1,740 sales in (at most) 28 months...60 sales a month...

Looking at their sales (ref screen shot on following page) we see that this shop is selling lots of travel posters too (as well as some cool vintage ads) all of which can be found in the public domain.

How To Get Your ESTY Listings Noticed:There are THREE ways to keep your listings showing up in ETSY search results...

1) List new items often to keep your shop fresh.

2) Use clear images.

3) Use Keyword phrases effectively.

The first two items above are pretty self explanatory. Let's talk about the 3rd item,using Keyword phrases effectively .

First, DON'T “keyword stuff”. Repeating the same keyword(s) over and over in your listing descriptions will NOT boost your search rank and in the case of Googlerank, it will penalize you.

When creating an ETSY listing, there are THREE prime places that you want to be sure to place your best keyword phrases.

1) Your listing title – Etsy allows you 140 characters in your listing titles. Use ALL of this space to get in as many good KW phrases as you can (while still making the title readable and enticing!). Use your KW phrases starting with your most important KW phrases first, to less important last.

2) Your listing description – Specifically place your best KW phrase(s) in thefirst line of your description's opening paragraph.

3) In your listing tags – ETSY allows you 13 tags (The listing set up page shows you where to enter them – ETSY is very user friendly). Use ALL 13 ofthe tag slots ETSY allows.

Here's another important consideration when entering KW phrases...

There are 3 different types of keyword phrases buyers use to find products.

1) Niche/subject keywords – Example “posters for kids”, “nursery print”

2) What the item is – Example “vintage movie poster”, “vintage travel poster”

3) Who the item is for, for example “mother’s day gift”, “posters for kids”

Try to use ALL THREE TYPES of KW phrases in your listings.

Here are some further tips...

Remember this listing we talked about earlier?

If we scroll down to the bottom of the listing we see this...

The first 3 “tags” here are the category/subcategories the seller selected when they created their ETSY listing. The next 13 tags are the tags the seller chose for this listing.

For YOU this is a great resource! You never want to copy tags directly, but if you were creating a similar “alphabet poster for kids”, you could look up similar posters that are ranking well and get ideas for which tags you should be using!

As well, you can get a good idea (from the first three tags) which category you should be listing in!

Here are some more tips...

Write concisely but descriptively! REMEMBER that you are not just writing for ETSY's search engine but also writing for BUYERS... real people!!

Encourage positive reviews by shipping promptly and going the extra mile – for example, you could include a hand signed note with every poster offering free shipping or a discount coupon on the buyer's next order (yes ETSY let's you create discount coupons codes for your customers!)

In the same note ask for a 5 star review if they are happy with their product and service!
