ETSY MADE IN C ANADA

Etsy: Made in Canada is a national grassroots initiative celebrating makers in local communities across Canada. Organized by local Etsy sellers and supported by like-minded partners Etsy: Made in Canada marketplaces popped up in 33 cities on September 26, 2015 drawing shoppers in the hundreds of thousands. These unique community run markets give Etsy sellers the opportunity to sell their goods to local buyers in markets that represent the spirit of their community and let neighbours discover the wealth of creativity and craftsmanship in their own backyards.

WHAT IS ETSY?

Etsy is a global marketplace where shoppers can browse more than 20 million creative items, ranging from art to furniture to vintage fashion, and everything in between. More than just a website, Etsy empowers people to do what they love - it’s a vibrant marketplace where new and seasoned creative businesses can grow.

ETSY HALIFA X

Organized by volunteers Fatema Sidat and Jessika Hepburn with help from Maritime Makers and Nova Scotia’s Etsy sellers the first EMIC market in Halifax was held at the Forum with 60+ vendors. Lineups stretched around the block with 4500+ attendees during the day. EMIC 2015 was held at the Garrison Grounds on Citadel Hill, 15,000 people attended making it one of Nova Scotia’s largest selling events for makers. Our market celebrates the creative resilience of the Nova Scotia economy inspiring our community with the chance to know and support their local creative entrepreneurs.

HOW IT WORKS

Etsy does not organize our markets, volunteer organizers and Etsy sellers in Canadian communities put on their own events with some help from Etsy in the form of a bursary, training summit for team captains, plus ongoing coaching, resources, and support. It is up to volunteers in each community to decide how they will run their markets and represent their creative community.

OUR GOALSEtsy Made in Canada Halifax is more than just an event it is an economic movement empowering communities to change the way we buy, sell, and make creative goods. Our vendors are primarily women and their Etsy shops provide an important secondary or primary income. For a large number of our vendors Etsy Made in Canada is their biggest sales event of the year.

THE ETSY ECONOMYThe Etsy community — a global online network of independent artists and designers — has been pioneering a new model for economic prosperity. As middle-skill, middle-wage jobs continue to decline, Etsy sellers’ work represents a societal shift toward empowering, flexible entrepreneurship that generates needed supplemental income.

SELLER STATS91% of Etsy sellers are women. They are more likely to be young adults (22% under age 30). Many are parents with children at home, 30% have household income under $50,000.
