During the transmission of culture from generation to generation, individuals have acquired certain behavioural patterns and ways of thinking which have been offered by a culture. The act of transmission ensures cultural continuity; or at least a relative cultural consistency is developed. The wealth of traditional textile represents an art phenomenon of stunning colors, a real expansion of colors and an impressive way of presenting motives. The motives are geometrical, herbal, often animal, but sometimes even human figures. The textile handicraft represents a high level of national creativity. Even though the conditions for producing textile (in the way it was used and at the time when costumes were actually worn) disappeared, we try to keep the creative work undertaken by our ancestors and transfer it into the present in a more adequate contemporary way. People show a need for attracting attention, so it is considered as an innate need. This need results in inno-vation, imagination development, fashion trends and even deep rootedness in tradition. This fashion show represents the harmony of indi-vidual creativity and common heritage. Etno revija (Ethno Fashion Show) covers the work of two competitions, Etno frizura Hrvatske (Ethno Hairstyle of Croatia) and Etno kreacija Hrvatske (Ethno Fashion Design Of Croatia), which have been organised by the Culutal Cen-ter Gatalinka since 1998. Apart from the competitions held in Vinkovci and Vukovar, this show is preceeded by research, education and publishing throughout the whole year. In addition, we organise trainings for hairdressers and two seminars annually, the Seminar on Creating Tradi-

tional Hairstyles for hairdressers and the Seminar on Designing Traditional Clothing for fashion design-ers. The project Ethno Hairstyles of the World originates from 2011. Certain hairstyles from other countries helped to understand some of our hair-styles known from literature, works of art or those partly preserved until today. The following pages show the works of designers, hairdressers, and student hairdressers for the year 2013. Each designer presented 5 designs. The hairstyle competition was devided into two sections: traditional hairstyles and contemporary hairstyles inspired by tradition. The hairstyles of the models were created by long-term members of the project: Josipa Džaja from Vinkovci, Martina Vincer from Osijek and Kata Šarčević and Zdravko Cedli from Đakovo.Project partners are City of Vinkovci and Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatiaand the sponsors Vukovar-Srijem County,Tourist Board of Vukovar-Srijem County, Tourist Board of the City of Vinkovci, Vinkovci Watersupply Line and Canalisation, City of Vukovar, Euclid Vinkovci, flower shops Frezija, Mi-moza and Dracena, Shwarzkopf Professional, Jew-eler DA-NI, The Administrative Department for Ag-riculture, Forestry and Rural Development,Croatian House Vukovar.Media coverage: Radio Vukovar, Radio Osijek, Ra-dio Vinkovci, Novosti Vinkovci, Posavska Hrvatska, Večernji list (newspapers), Vinkovci television (VTV)

Helena chose roses and other floral motives for her collection which are frequently used on costumes from a large part of Croatia. By her collection she wants to change the ingrained beliefs of wool being just winter material. Combining it with silk, cotton and other natural materials, (with very fine Australian merino wool this time), we get high-quality textile which cools our body in summer and is very comfortable to wear. People from Moslavina would say: “It is pretty, it steals your eyes” (it attracts attention) Sponsored by: Vukovar-Srijem County, Jeweler DA-NI. The silver handmade earrings represent a summer symbol stemming from the oldest European calendar found in Vinkovci. The calendar is 6000 years old.

According to the common definition, lace is a fine open fabric made of linen, cotton, silk, agave, silver or golden threads by head. Two basic techniques of making lace are sewing with a needle and interlacing thread on bobbins. Blaženka Kapetanović from the Association ˝Sla-vonika˝ from Našice chose together with her associates the textile structure, thread thickness and the size of orna-ments of each motive. Frequently, creativity was stopped at its first step, as if it was frightened by the unforeseeable possibility of progress.

She presents herself with 5 coat models made by applying techniques such as traditional sewing, weaving, crocheting and knitting. These techniques are joined in such way to create a patchwork that forms a new type of weaving. All coats are made by hand using natural materi-als (wool, lisle, silk, cotton). Parts of the texture are colored and illustrated by hand. The shape, lines, colors and cut exceed the demands of a contemporary woman, respecting her heritage and implement-ing it in her everyday life and showing that individuality in fashion trends can be cherished through tradition.

Anita Šemeš/Zagreb

Anita Šemeš represents the third generation of the “World of Patchwork”. She acquired her knowledge of traditional clothes and costumes in Middle School, the Centre for Culture and Education, taking courses in traditional dances and as a traditional dancer and singer in the Lado and Dr. Ivan Ivančan ensembles. With her five creations, she covered the traditional inheritance of Eastern, Central and Southern Croatia. Her inspiration was a wedding towel, a headpiece in Istrian weddings, bags for storing potatoes, the “Šestine” (red) umbrella and embroidered details from a vest from Prigorje called a lajbek.

Kristina Dolibašić/Vinkovci

Kristina Dolibašić created a collection inspired by traditional costumes of the Vinkovci area. She found her inspiration in the wealth of ducats (gold coins) and specific stylized floral motives of golden embroidery. Embroidery with golden or thinner silver metal string came into this area in the middle of the 19th century from Turkey, Italy and Austria. The locals used to embroider using yellow or white gold. Later, the metal string was replaced by thread. The collection is made of black and white modern materials with golden details drawn by hand using textile color.

Prechristian ornaments of Šokci in Pannonian zone

Lecturer : TOMISLAV LIVAJA, MAG. EDUC. ART.

Šokice were marked in their appearance by the most elegant costumes, sculptures of their own kind, by many protective and invoking ornaments from the Prechristian era. Some ornaments are older than 2000 years, and were carved into different things: bodies, trees, objects and costumes as well. The cult of motherhood and fertility was still strong and women represented the main attribute of the society, having a dominant place in the visual culture. This lecture will show the development of these ornaments and their contemporary use in creations, designs and textile.
