2. Important Relationships in the Case Georgina Smith and her student, Luis Georgina and the school principal Georgina and Luiss family The family and the parent liaison 3. NAEYC Core Values Recognize that children are best understood and supported in the context of family, culture (ethnicity, racial identity, economic level, family structure, language, and religious and political beliefs, which profoundly influence each childs development and relationship to the world), community, and society Recognize that children and adults achieve their full potential in the context of relationships that are based on trust and respect 4. NAEYC Ideals To appreciate the vulnerability of children and their dependence on adults To develop relationships of mutual trust and create partnerships with the families we serve To respect the dignity and preferences of each Family and to make an effort to learn about its structure, culture, language, customs, and beliefs. To participate in building support networks for families by providing them with opportunities to interact with program staff, other families, community resources, and professional services. 5. NAEYC Principles We shall make every effort to communicate effectively with all families in a language that they understand. We shall use community resources for translation and interpretation when we do not have sufficient resources in our own programs. We shall maintain confidentiality and shall respect the familys right to privacy, refraining from disclosure of confidential information and intrusion into family life. However, when we have reason to believe that a childs welfare is at risk, it is permissible to share confidential information with agencies, as well as with individuals who have legal responsibility for intervening in the childs interest. 6. Contradictions if any? Georgina speaks the families first language, Spanish Georgina is very supportive & willing to work with the family School had a parent liaison to assist with uniforms for the children 7. Possible actions the educator/professional should take? A home visit would be possible, but before a relationship is established it may be intrusive to the family. Also, Georgina could have chosen to do absolutely nothing. This certainly would not be the right action to take but is a possible one. Georgina could have ignored the problem or leave it up to someone else to handle the issue. 8. What recommendations/actions should be taken? Unobtrusively communicating with the family Connecting family with resources Help build a strong relationship between the family, school, & community
