Moral management Not only the letter of the law, but the spirit of the law Beyond what the law actually requires Requires ethical leadership All employees see themselves under single identity Good business is just being morally good

Immoral management Devoid of any type of ethical principles Opposes ethical principles Law and ethics are impediments to profit Doing what’s wrong will lead to profit One must do whatever it takes to profit

Amoral management Unintentional – McDonald’s Styrofoam containers that don’t biodegrade Intentional – morals don’t matter

Ethics and The Law Law & ethics govern different realms

o Law is public, dealing with rules that can be enforcedo Ethics are private, and cannot be enforced the same wayo Ethics can be subjective to a certain degree o Laws are objective o Laws are thought of as minimum level of ethical conducto Ethics are higher level

The law embodies the ethics of business o The idea that if its legal, its ethical o Often, there is overlap

1. Not everything that’s immoral is illegal 2. The law is slow to develop in new areas of concern – the law is often reactive 3. The law often uses moral concepts that aren’t precisely defined

a. Good faithb. Fair dealing

4. Courts5. The law is a rather inefficient instrument, and relying on the law alone invites

legislation and litigation where it is not necessary

It’s often more profitable for the corporation to follow the law and act ethically in the long run

How are ethics and laws related to each other? 1. Correspondence theory – if its legal, then its legal OR if it isn’t illegal, then it’s not

unethical o Though they do not match up exactly

2. Separatism a. Privileging the lawb. Privileging ethics

Internal perspective: businesses will create their own rules that will benefit themselves and allow the corporation to be profitable

Objection 1: ethics is just a device to maximize profit, and is thus important Objection 2: assumes that ethical conduct contributes to a corporation’s profits but it

seems unethical conduct is even more profitable

External perspective: 飞机飞地方风景 短发短发短发短发是地方纠结纠结纠结纠结减肥的 计算机 jj
