Nuestro objetivo es establecer estudios sobre la abundancia anual, la distribución espacial y potencial de las poblaciones de las especies del género Lutzomyia incriminadas en la transmisión de la Leishmaniasis en Panamá. Detectar la infección natural de los flebótomos con parásitos del género Leishmania utilizando herramientas moleculares. Relacionar la estructura genética poblacional con la distribución espacial y potencial de esas poblaciones. Como estudios conexos establecer la filogeografía local de los flebótomos y comparar sus linajes con individuos de la misma especie distribuidas en la región. La información generada aportaría al conocimiento de la historia, ecología e interacción de las poblaciones vectores de Leishmania en Panamá, buscando explicar o proyectar el impacto de las variaciones en las condiciones climáticas y topográficas en el incremento de esta enfermedad considerada re-emergentes por las entidades de salud. Con el conocimiento de los factores que intervienen en el en la ecología poblacional de los flebótomos podemos implementar medidas de control adecuadas ajustadas a las condiciones ambientales de nuestro país.
INTRODUCCIÓN PROCEDMIENTO DE COLECTA E IDENTIFICACIÓN DE LOS FLEBOTOMINOS
En Panamá la Leishmaniasis Cutánea Americana (LCA) es una de las enfermedades tropicales de mayor importancia en la salud publica, y se estima un incremento de 3,000 nuevos casos por año (Miranda et al. 2009). El 90 % de estos casos provienen de zonas rurales y de poco acceso en las provincias de Bocas del Toro, Coclé, Panamá Oeste, Colón y Panamá Este según el Ministerio de Salud. Unas de las posibles causas del incremento de la enfermedad es la alteración de la ecología de las poblaciones silvestre tanto del vector como de los hospederos, inducido por la fragmentación descontrolada de los bosques Travi et al. 2005. Situación que ha permitiendo la migración de las especies de flebótomos a los asentamientos humanos próximos a los fragmentos de bosques. La presencia de flebótomos transmisores de LCA en áreas domiciliarias es un indicativo de que estas especies se han o están adaptado a los nuevos hábitats, los cual juega un papel importante en la epidemiología de la leishmaniasis en Panamá, aumentando el riesgo de transmisión.
