    on the ground the othernight and I looked up at theclock and it was only 7:15pm.I couldnt believe it. I knowand understand the powersof early darkness, but towant to crawl under thesheets at that hour really hadme wanting to figure outways to keep my energy up.Fatigue is the most com-

    mon complaint women bringto their doctors. Being tiredisnt just annoying, its yourbodys cry for help and if youdont pay attention and cor-rect whats making you tired,you will get sick, saysEricka Schwartz, M.D., theinternist from New York Citywho specializes in treatingfatigue. Ken Goodrick, Ph.D.a psychologist at Baylor Col-lege of Medicine adds thatwhen you constantly feeldrained, lifestyle habits areusually to blame, and its notalways about the big-drainsthat affect us the hardest.Big drains would be

    those life events that weknow drain our energy; likekids, finances and work.Those are all givens. Weneglect to count the littlethings that add up, compileand together zap our energyequally if not worse.All work and no play is

    exhausting. Routines, bore-dom, 24/7 living can wearyou out. Try to build in somepleasure throughout yourday by reading jokes, flippingthrough a magazine, callinga friend, playing a game.These mini-breaks will be anenergy booster.Shunning the sun is a huge

    energy drainer. Researchshows that you need outside

    light and exposure everyday, even if its for just a fewminutes and even if itscloudy outside. Its amazingwhat a little outdoor energywill do.Poor breathing habits will

    lead to fatigue. Shallowbreathing doesnt encourageenough oxygen to be takeninto your body, which willpromote a higher heart rateand blood pressure, whichincreases fatigue. So breathea little deeper when yourefeeling tired or about to gointo an energy draining situa-tion.Sitting too long, whether at

    your desk or on the couchwill sap your energy. Staringat a T.V. or computer screenwill tend to make you blinkless frequently, leading todry eyes, eyestrain and thenwanting some shut-eye.Stretch, walk, yawn and takefrequent breaks.Sleeping inconsistency is

    really hard on your body.Your bodys internal clockcraves consistency and if youstay up late on weekends andsleep in late, youre givingyourself jet-lag withouteven leaving town. Erraticschedules can have a hang-over affect, causing fatigueafter you wake up. Establishregular bedtime and wake-uptimes for positive energy.Even on weekends and vaca-tions try to keep close toyour regular sleeping sched-ule.Mild dehydration can

    make you feel tired and/orlethargic. Your blood volume

    lowers, which means youdont get as much blood toyour brain and your heartmust pump harder. Plan yourhydration, by drinking appro-priately throughout your day.Bright lights at night can

    reset your internal clockreducing and/or delayingthe natural secretion ofsleep-inducing melatoninthat happens near bed time.Dim your house lights atnight a few hours before bed-time.Not eating breakfast,

    instead opting for vitamins-plus-coffee for your morn-ing boost of energy. Youneed to naturally boost yourmetabolism by giving your-self a more sustained energysource through eating ahealthy breakfast.Overdoing exercise is not

    a good energy strategy. Yourbody needs times to recover,replenish its energy storesand repair muscles. So allowa rest day or two in yourweekly exercise routine.Toting around extra

    weight causes fatigue andstresses your body in a num-ber of ways. Extra weightmakes your joints, musclesand heart work harder at alltimes. Try losing those extra5 10 pounds and see howyou experience less fatigue.Poor posture makes you

    look tired and it creates thefeeling as well. When jointsarent aligned properly thebody must work harder inorder to sustain normal activ-ities.Lastly, unwanted noise is

    stressful. So avoid, turndown and/or change thenoises in your life that mightbe keeping you from a goodnights sleep, getting yourwork done or simply beingenjoyed.

    found an article about anactress who claimed to havebeen kicked by Trigger. Theheadline read; Trigger notguilty.It just doesnt fit in with

    what we think about our sil-ver screen heroes and theirhorses. Its just about beyondcomprehension that Trigger,Champion, Koko or Toppercould do such a thing.If Roy or Gene were being

    beat up, or were in trouble,Trigger or Champion wouldrear up and protect them, orthey might even attack amountain lion that wasthreatening Dale or a child.

    But to simply kick someonewho wasnt a threat, no way,I remember reading that

    someone cut most of Trig-gers tail hair off, and it hap-pened to Topper once, andno one got kicked.All of the horses used by

    Gene, Rex, Roy, Hoppy, etc,in parades, at rodeos, andwho knows how many otherpersonal appearances, had toput up with an awful lot ofhassle. There were hun-dreds of kids and adultsgathered around them. All

    wanting to touch the horse,or get a picture with theirfavorite cowboy. No doubtthere was a lot of pushingand shoving, yelling, loudnoises, and who knows whatall.We still see some of that

    occasionally at rodeos, bar-rel racing events, parades,pulling contests, or justwhere a horse and a ridershow up.The horses take it in

    stride. Ive had firecrackersgo off beside my horse, carshonking, dogs barking ,geese honking, flappingtheir wings and flying at usand my horse perhaps shieda little but kept on doingwhat I wanted them to do.

    Not always, though. Ivealso had my horse spinaround and try to run fromwhat ever the distractionwas. One horse bucked theentire length of main streetin my home town when afirecracker was tossedtoward us. Any one who hasridden much has probablyhad the same things happen.But, generally a broke horsewill take notice of loud nois-es or such and just keep ongoing where they have beenpointed, or switch their tailand stay tied with littleresponse.Its amazing to me the crap

    horses put up with some-times and dont go nuts. I lefta mare Id just bought at myfolks place once. Told my

    younger brothers and sistersto stay off her because Ididnt know her well yet andshe had bucked with me. Igot there to pick her up thenext day and there were sev-en kids on and around her.She was eating grass.Yeah, I love horses. Theyll

    be the absolute perfect part-ner on a ride, or meet you atthe gate and wait to havetheir ears scratched. Thentheyll turn around and dosomething so dumb youwonder how they manage tostay alive. But, Ive madepeople wonder the samething about me, at times.RIDE EASY [email protected]
