Project aim:

Education for Sustainable Development in Protected Areas, Centre of Environmental Education of Amfissa, Greece, 6-19 July 2014

To improve the conservation status of 4 priority plant species and 2 priority habitat types, that

are found in Natura 2000 sites:

*Arabis kennedyae,

*Astragalus macrocarpus subsp. lefkarensis,

*Centaurea akamantis,

*Ophrys kotschyi ,

*9590 Cedrus brevifolia forests (Cedrosetum brevifoliae),

*9390 Scrub and low forest vegetation of Quercus alnifolia.

The four plant species are:

• Endemic to Cyprus

• Included in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus

• Protected by the Bern Convention

• Protected by the Habitat’s Directive

• Priority Species

*Arabis kennedyae

*Ophrys kotschyi

*Astragalus macrocarpussubsp. lefkarensis *Centaurea akamantis

How the goals have been achieved

• Establishment, monitoring and management of a network of five Plant Micro-Reserves (PMRs).

The Plant Micro-Reserves (PMRs) approach

PMRs are legally defined as areas of small surface size (less than 20 ha), in order to:

• protect a selected sample of the main subpopulations of the rarest, endemic or threatened species

and to

• establish a continuously monitored network.

Such a patchy network of small protected areas is considered as a complementary tool to the generally

adopted "large site" strategy that has recently been materialised into the European Network of nature

conservation, Natura 2000.

Education for Sustainable Development in Protected Areas, Centre of Environmental Education of Amfissa, Greece, 6-19 July 2014

The Plant Micro-Reserves (PMRs) approach

• It envisages the monitoring and conservation of small land plots of great value in terms of plant

richness, endemism and rarity.

• It has been successfully adopted in other EU countries (i.e. Spain, Slovenia, Greece, Bulgaria).

• This project was based on the best practices that have been successfully implemented in other

PMR projects around Europe.

Education for Sustainable Development in Protected Areas, Centre of Environmental Education of Amfissa, Greece, 6-19 July 2014

The Plant Micro-Reserves (PMRs) approach

• The PMRs approach was initially developed about 20 years ago in Valencia (Spain). It was first

developed around 1990 by Emilio Laguna and was originally put into practice in 1994 within the

framework of an EU-funded LIFE project.

Education for Sustainable Development in Protected Areas, Centre of Environmental Education of Amfissa, Greece, 6-19 July 2014

The Plant Micro-Reserves (PMRs) approach

• This concept is now widely accepted as one of

the most effective practices towards the

conservation of plant diversity in small land

plots that are of peak value in terms of plant

richness, endemism or rarity.
