Hi Folks,
Since New Year’s day the local community has undergone significant stress from the terrible fires. A big thank you on behalf of our club for the volunteer efforts that members have put in to support where they can. These efforts included assisting at the Kildare College, Blaze Aid at Adelong, “M T Esky” runs amongst the Tumut/Tumbarumba area and other miscellaneous support. It was very humbling to see people keenly reaching out to help.
On that note, the Club has reached out to the National Parks and Wildlife Service, State Forests and Kosciusko Huts Association to offer help to reopen tracks in the NSW High Country. There is much work to do over a likely long period of time buthopefully the Club can be of assistance.
Upcoming events in March include a BBQ for volunteers and farmers at the Adelong BlazeAid campand a working Bee on Sunday 22nd at our Quarry Training Area at Alfredtown. The Club’s AnnualCookout at the Quarry Training Area is coming up on the weekend after Easter. As always itpromises to be a great night of tasty camp oven food, good company and possibly a cold beverageor two.
This issue of TrackChat is an inaugural one for Editor Kelli Edwards, who has picked up the mantlefrom long serving Editor Michael Salway. Many thanks to Michael for his publishing exploits overthe past 5 years, much appreciated.
On the Subject of thankyous Club stalwart John Kent has lead a big effort in compiling a VehicleRecovery Guide. All the answers to questions you haven’t asked until you’re stuck. Well done toJohn and his band of advisors.
Guest speaker at this month’s Club meeting on Tuesday 17th March is from Transport for NSW(formerly Roads and Maritime Services). Topics will include driving fatigue management, the 10most misunderstood road rules and Question and Answer time.
Read and enjoy this issue, there is some great content.
Yours in 4WDing, Alan Pottie

The use of well understood, standard hand signals is very important to avoid confusion
Those relying on the hand signals for driving or winching found the standard hand signals easy
to understand
When driving or winching the vehicle it is essential to be looking at the person signaling and not
at the ground in front of the vehicle
Directing driving or winching is something that needs to be practiced because in the heat of the
moment is it very easy to forget what hand signals should be used and this can lead to confusion
Consensus was that we should introduce a set protocol to the club and that we follow that
standard whenever needed and when running training workshops
Setting up for winching and snatching, plus driving over obstacles is something that needs to be
practiced regularly so that it becomes second nature (and also makes sure your equipment
works)
QUARRY TRAINING MORNINGSunday 23 February 2020By John Kent, Training Officer
It was great to see 12 vehicles turn up at Forest Hill at 8.30am for our first Club morning for the
year at our Quarry Training Area, and especially to see prospective members Chris and his son
Nathan, and Brent and Perry come along to find out a bit more about the Club and what we do.
Regular Club members attending were Paul, Brendan, Bill, Jake, Doug, Andrea, Kellie,
Jason and Danni, and Scott.
One of the things I wanted to achieve was to trial our draft Vehicle Recovery Protocol to make sure
we had things correct. We started by talking about the steps to follow in vehicle recovery including
the “Hierarchy of Recovery” which goes through different recovery options from lowest risk to
greatest risk, and the importance of choosing the lowest risk option possible.
We had quite a good discussion about communication and the hand signals to use when guiding a
vehicle through tricky obstacles, and when winching a vehicle. It was evident that different people
were used to different signals depending on their background. We decided that signals to use when
directing a driven vehicle were different from directing winching (I will amend the draft Protocol).
This was confirmed when we practiced guiding and winching with most having a go at both driving
their vehicle and guiding another vehicle through an obstacle. As part of the winching we also went
through the exercise of calculating the recovery load on the winch (a combination of vehicle weight,
rolling resistance of the ground under the wheels, and the slope of the ground). This should also be
calculated when doing a snatch recovery to ensure safety limits of equipment are not exceeded.
The exercises highlighted a few things for me:
After a well earned cuppa, we headed off for a tag along drive around our QTA tracks with a few
people challenging themselves on the more difficult tracks and Paul showing off by reversing up
one of the steep climbs (we will add that to our advanced driver training). By late morning most
had had enough and drifted off home.
Thanks to all for coming along for a successful morning.

Old Doc Geezer An old physician, Doctor Gordon Geezer, became very bored in retirement and decided to re-open a medical clinic. He put a sign up outside that said: "Dr Geezer's Clinic. Get your treatment for $500 - if not cured, get back $1,000." Doctor Digger Young, who was positive that thisold geezer didn't know beans about medicine, thought this would be a great opportunity to get $1,000. So he went to Dr Geezer's clinic. Dr Young: "Dr Geezer, I have lost all taste in my mouth. Can you please help me?" Dr Geezer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from Box 22 and put 3 drops in Dr Young's mouth Dr Young: "Aaagh! This is Gasoline!" Dr Geezer: "Congratulations! You've got your taste back. That will be $500." Dr Young gets annoyed and goes back after a couple of days figuring to recover his money Dr Young: "I have lost my memory, I cannot remember anything." Dr Geezer: "Nurse, please bring medicine from Box 22 and put 3 drops in the patient's mouth." Dr Young: "Oh, no you don't… that is Gasoline!" Dr Geezer: "Congratulations! You've got your memory back. That will be $500." Dr Young (after having lost $1000) leaves angrily and comes back after several more days. Dr Young: "My eyesight has become weak... I can hardly see anything!" Dr Geezer: "Well, I don't have any medicine for that so here's your $1000 back" (giving him a $10note). Dr Young: "But this is only $10!" Dr Geezer: "Congratulations! You got your vision back! That will be $500." Moral of the story is just because you're "Young" doesn't mean that you can outsmart an (OldGeezer".

Club Cookout @ Wantabadgery - May 2003 We all enjoy reminiscing (and having a chuckle) about our past activities and trips. This month Brenda Moore has kindly shared some of her photos from the Club Cookout atWantabadgery in May 2003.
Paul Kingdom (apparently sitting in a hole)and John Kent (well... we're actually not toosure what John's doing here)
You can't beat a club cookout for greatcompany and even better food!
We're not too sure if Brenda Moore (L) hasflicked ash into Helen Brill's eyes, or if Helenis just being a bit camera shy.

How can you help?
For a club newsletter to be successful it needs input from Members and this is where you can help. If you have any stories, photos, funnies or other information that you would like to share pleaseemail or bring it to the general meeting. We can scan photographs or negatives so don't be afraidto sift through your photo albums and send us a yarn. We value your feedback so if you would like to see a new topic included in TrackChat or would liketo provide general feedback please don't hesitate to send it through. I enjoyed preparing this edition of TrackChat and I hope you equally enjoying reading it. RegardsKelli Edwards
