Established in 2011, CCADV’s Training Institute is Connecticut’s leading resource for domestic violence education and training. Building on over thirty years of experience, we provide affordable, high-quality learning opportunities that strengthen Connecticut’s response to domestic violence.

We are pleased to provide the current offerings for the 2016 Fall semester. This semester’s focus includes an in-depth look at responding to victim trauma, addressing and preventing dating violence in our schools, supporting the healthcare needs of victims, and strengthening the law enforcement response.

Ongoing training is critical to keeping up with best practices and learning new skills. As the state’s leading voice for victims of domestic violence and those organizations that serve them, we strive to ensure comprehensive training by leading experts that builds community awareness, stakeholder capacity and available resources to increase victim safety and offender accountability.

CCADV, in collaboration with our 18 member organizations, works to improve outcomes for victims through policy, advocacy, public awareness, capacity building and technical assistance. It is our hope that the Training Institute will serve as a valuable resource that strengthens your understanding of domestic violence and leaves you well-positioned to meet the needs of victims and offenders with whom you interact.

We look forward to working with you.

Trauma Informed Recommendations for Working with Children Exposed to

Domestic Violence

It has been well documented that exposure to domestic violence is a potent traumatic stressor for children, often adversely affecting their physical and emotional health. However, caring adults can help children heal and thrive. Recommendations discussed during this training were created to help guide children’s advocates in their daily work with mothers and families. These recommendations are drawn from a review of core components of evidence-based therapeutic intervention models for children exposed to domestic violence including Child Parent Psychotherapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and the Kid’s Club.

The Intersection of Brain Injury

and Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is a common cause of brain injury, especially for women. An acquired brain injury (ABI) is an injury to the brain, which is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma. A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one type of acquired brain injury involving a blow, jolt, or penetrating head injury that disrupts normal brain function. Long term effects of brain injury can include cognitive, emotional, sensory and motor impair-ments. Through this training, participants will learn the types of brain injury including acquired and traumatic brain injuries, the

symptoms of brain injury, screening for brain injury and resources and referrals for individuals with brain injuries.

Developing a Language Access Plan

Having a proactive plan for meeting the language needs of survivors with LEP can help to provide meaningful access to services while increasing their options and enhancing their safety. Developing greater language access is a process. You have to start somewhere, and to fulfill your mission, commitment to community, and obligations, your plan needs to continue to evolve.

This training will help to move your agency from having no Language Access Plan to your first written plan. Through this training, you will be provided with a Language Access Plan Template, as developed by the National Latino Network, with sample language that you can use to develop a rough draft of your plan.

Creating Partnerships with Healthcare Professionals to Respond to IPV

Research tells us that health care providers are seen as trusted sources of information and that women who talk to their providers about intimate partner violence are more likely to seek out support from domestic violence advocacy programs. However, individual health care providers can only be a partner in helping women and their families if they know how to compassionately and effectively assess for violence and how to provide victims with referrals and support. Topics discussed at this training include health consequences of intimate partner violence, the role of health care providers in screening, assessing, and referral for intimate partner violence, and various health care professionals and strategies for engagement.
