Overview of Wellbeing & Activity Centres

Essex Cares has 30 Wellbeing & Activity Centres across the county offering day time activities and opportunities for adults with a range of support needs. The centres offer all visitors a warm welcome with a wide range of activities to support individuals to maximise independence and to gain and maintain skills for everyday living, enabling them to continue to be part of their local community.

Our highly skilled staff provide person-centred support to the customers to achieve their aspirations and goals through action plans. Each individual is offered choice and control over the activities they want to participate in, and we continuously review these to ensure variety and stimulation for each and every day of attendance.

Harwich Wellbeing & Activity Centre

The Harwich Centre is located in the grounds of Dover & Harwich Community College, in the ground floor of an old Georgian headmaster’s house. The centre and staff there provide support for adults with learning disabilities.

Activities available at the centre include relaxation, arts and crafts, cooking skills, learning about current affairs, money skills, sports and Makaton.

Customers are encouraged and supported to access venues within the local community including the Adult Community Learning College, swimming pool, bowling alley, shops and restaurants. Staff also teach customers about the importance of road safety.

Queen Street Drop-inColchester

Queen Street Drop-in offers person-centred support for adults with learning disabilities. The centre is based in Colchester town centre and acts as a meeting place for customers to enable them to make full use of the surrounding facilities with meaningful, structured activities.

Customers can join the centre-run book club at Colchester library, lunch clubs and ten pin bowling, all taking place at local venues. All the activities are based on the needs and wishes of each and every individual who attends.

Customers can also join Crafty Drama, a dancing and singing group who rehearse in a nearby church hall for several shows and performances throughout the year.

Rosemary Road Drop-inClacton-on-Sea

The Rosemary Road Drop-in is based within an old shop front on Clacton High Street and provides care and support for adults with learning disabilities.

Being right in the middle of town offers customers easy access into the community. They are supported with shopping skills, learn about healthy lifestyles including going to the gym and also have lunch in town on a regular basis.

Customers and staff also volunteer at the local food bank, supporting other people in need.

“I like being supported by the staff here to try new things. I like going out to meet new people. I love going swimming

and laugh all the time; no one else could take me – but the Clacton Drop-in does and I get a proper lesson when

I’m there.’’

Woodlands Wellbeing & Activity Centre Colchester

Woodlands Wellbeing & Activity Centre offers person-centred services for adults with learning and physical disabilities.

The centre provides customers with meaningful activities in–house, including sessions within the centre’s specialist sensory room which uses lights, sounds and smells to engage customers as well as games and crafts.

Customers are also supported to enjoy activities out in the community including ten pin bowling and lunch clubs at local venues.

The centre can accommodate those with high support needs. Activities and care provided are based on each individual’s needs and wishes.

Marylands Wellbeing & Activity CentreColchester

Sharing the same site as Shrublands, Marylands Wellbeing & Activity Centre supports older adults by providing an opportunity to socialise and be involved with stimulating activities.

Activities available include floor games, movement to music and regular themed cinema weeks as well as quizzes and discussions about current affairs. The centre offers lots of art and craft activities including making cards, artwork and themed decorations to display at the centre throughout the year.

Customers are able to visit the local area and beauty spots on an activity bus shared with Woodlands Wellbeing & Activity Centre, also based in the historic town of Colchester.

Millicents Wellbeing & Activity CentreClacton-on-Sea

Millicents Wellbeing & Activity Centre offers support to older adults in the local community. The centre occupies a large bungalow situated on a modern estate in Clacton.

Customers at the centre can take part is a wide range of activities including snooker, skittles and crafts as well as having access to hairdressing and chiropody services on-site.

The staff at Millicents encourage customers to access the local community, including: visits to garden centres, lunch time visits to local pubs and cafes and an annual Christmas shopping trip.

The centre has links with local schools where customers are able to reminisce with students about times gone by and the children come to the centre to put on shows and to sing carols at Christmas.

Shrublands Wellbeing & Activity CentreColchester

Shrublands Wellbeing & Activity Centre offers a specialist service for people with a range of mental health needs including dementia and depression, in a small friendly environment run by a multi-skilled team.

The centre provides a range of activities that encourage stimulation for cognitive, physical and emotional support for our customers, and respite and emotional support for relatives and carers.

Activities include: music appreciation, watching classic films, singing, enjoying table and board games and reminiscing with friends.The centre has a large garden which customers are able to tend to including planting bulbs and growing plants and vegetables.

Over the course of the year customers can take part in annual fetes, fundraising events and garden parties.

Mid Essex

Braintree Wellbeing & Activity Centre

The Braintree Wellbeing & Activity Centre supports adults with learning disabilities as well as those with profound physical and sensory impairments.

Customers at the centre are supported to access community venues such as the local swimming pool, cinema as well as pubs and cafes to have the opportunity to enjoy a meal out. The on-site café offers a nutritious lunch for when customers choose to remain in the centre. Chair fit sessions take place regularly for gentle and energetic seated exercises. The centre boasts a specialist sensory room with a water bed which many customer enjoy, an IT suite and a physiotherapy and passive stretching room.

The centre works in partnership with Community Nurses, Occupational Therapists and Advocacy teams to provide a bi-monthly drop in session where customer and families can discuss topics such as personal health & hygiene, relationships and sexual health.

Chapter House Wellbeing & Activity CentreMaldon

Tucked away behind Maldon’s busy high street, Chapter House Wellbeing & Activity Centre provides support to adults with learning disabilities.

The centre sits in large grounds with two allotment patches which customers maintain, providing some of the local shops with fresh produce. Being close to Maldon high street means customers can easily access the community and transport to other venues.

Activities within the community include: sport centre activities such as gym visits, swimming, badminton, tennis and basketball as well as walks along the promenade and shopping for lunch time meals.

Customers can take part in a whole range of activities within the centre including board and card games, Nintendo Wii games, arts and crafts, baking, learning to prepare meals and understanding about healthy eating and living.

Chelmsford Wellbeing & Activity Centre

Chelmsford Wellbeing & Activity Centre is a large community based centre offering customers opportunities to participate in activities, as well as accessing the local venues such as the busy Chelmsford shopping area. The centre supports adults with a wide range of learning disabilities.

Staff support individuals to develop a range of communication skills through Makaton signing, pictorial cards and objects of reference. Healthy lifestyles are promoted through exercise, Tai Chi, bowling and Boccia, as well as cooking and smoothie making. The centre has an IT suite which also supports communication skills amongst customers.

Halstead Wellbeing & Activity Centre

Halstead Wellbeing & Activity centre supports adults with a learning disability to remain active within their communities.

Activities within the centre support customers to learn and maintain skills in shopping, cooking and money management. Customers can regularly participate in cooking and baking, knitting, playing pool, crafts and tai chi.

Customers are encouraged to take part in activities outside of the centre including ten pin bowling and visits to the library. Groups also use public transport to explore the wider area including Braintree and canal boat trips in Harlow in the summer months.

The customers and staff at the centre are part of Halstead’s Heart & Soul walking group taking part in regular exercise in and around the town and countryside.

Mid Essex

Newland Street Drop-inWitham

Located in Witham, Newland Street Drop-in provides an ideal place for customers to meet up and plan their day. With easy access to community venues, there are regular outings to the library, shops and sports centres.

The centre offers a point of contact and information for the public to visit and find out more about the services Essex Cares offers. The shop is one of several locations in Witham supporting the Keep Safe project, providing a place of safety for vulnerable adults to call in to.

Staff support customers to build confidence with managing money, travel training to attend the centre independently, shopping and preparing basic meals.

Customers can also enjoy activities within the Drop-in including producing very creative artwork which is displayed and on sale to the public in the local library.

Highfields Wellbeing & Activity CentreChelmsford

Centrally situated in Chelmsford, Highfields Wellbeing & Activity Centre incorporates Cotman lounge, supporting adults with physical and/or sensory impairments, as well as older people living in the community.

The centre offers a really wide range of support and activities including art and crafts, gentle seated exercises, scrabble, card games, board games, reminiscence, current affairs discussions and shopping trips out within the community.

to people and can recommend it to anyone. As I know without Highfields I would not have been able to achieve

or live as I am able to do now, and be able to live in society as a normal person.”

Charles Dickens Court Wellbeing & Activity CentreChelmsford

Charles Dickens Court Wellbeing & Activity Centre, located in the Newland Spring area of Chelmsford, is a busy and popular centre open six days a week.

The staff at the centre create a happy and safe environment to support older adults with a range of needs and support them with things such as personal care, mobility, sensory and cognitive stimulation.

The focus of many activities within the centre is on participation, conversation and creativity. Throughout the year there are themed artwork displays on the walls which are created by customers, and other activities include musical bingo, quizzes, gardening, fundraising and booked entertainment such as tribute acts.

Rohan Court Wellbeing & Activity CentreSouth Woodham Ferrers

Rohan Court Wellbeing & Activity Centre meets just once a week in South Woodham Ferrers.

The centre supports older adults to enjoy a day out, socialise with new friends and take part in group discussion, quizzes and a variety of activities such as arts and crafts, board games and gentle seated exercises.

Ashleigh Wellbeing & Activity CentreBasildon

Ashleigh Wellbeing & Activity Centre is a community hub located in Basildon. The centre is predominantly known for supporting adults who have learning disabilities but increasingly offers services that support the whole community.

Customers are encouraged and supported to access facilities within the local area including swimming, ten pin bowling, lunch clubs and walking groups.

There are also many activities for customers to enjoy within the centre including sensory sessions, art, reading, listening to music, playing games and watching films. Healthy living and eating is promoted through cooking, health and beauty sessions, massage, yoga, the use of gym balls and passive stretching.

Canvey Island Wellbeing & Activity Centre

Canvey Island Wellbeing & Activity Centre is a bright and spacious centre supporting adults with learning disabilities.

The centre provides many activities for customers and individuals are able to select the daily activities they wish to participate in from the choice board.

Customers can take part in sports sessions at the local sports centre, golf range and bowling alley as well as enjoy activities at the centre within the specialist sensory room and using the kitchen to cook their own lunchtime meals.

Staff support customers to undertake work experience at a local residential home as well as supporting the Salvation Army activities in Hadleigh.

Hesten Lodge Wellbeing & Activity CentreBenfleet

Hesten Lodge Wellbeing & Activity Centre is a specialised service offering a high level of care to vulnerable adults with physical and learning disabilities. The centre is small and unique supporting a maximum of 20 customers each day.

The centre provides many different activities on site including arts & crafts, chair fit exercises, cooking & baking, relaxation, passive stretching, yoga, sensory sessions and one to one communication work. Woodland and spacious gardens surround the centre, which can be used in the summer months when weather permits.

The centre also supports customers to access the local community including visits to the library, over 50’s lunch club, coffee mornings at the nearby church, bowling and shopping trips.

Walter Boyce Wellbeing & Activity CentreBrentwood

The Walter Boyce Wellbeing & Activity Centre supports adults with learning disabilities. Around 45 customers a day attend the centre as well as a number of customers with more profound learning disabilities who attend the specialist unit providing higher levels of care. The centre aims to increase customers’ confidence, self esteem and expectations by supporting them to take greater control of their lives.

The centre promotes and encourages a strong community presence and customers are supported to regularly access the community. There are pub lunches, swimming, snooker, gym and shopping trips to look forward to as well as outings to one of the three local country parks for biking, crazy golf or to play football. There are also a wide range of work experience opportunities available to customers with the Book Rest coffee shop in Brentwood Library and Copy Cats 2, a print studio based within the centre itself.

Activities at the centre include: yoga, arts & crafts, music, karaoke, communication,

massage, drama, pottery, cooking, reminiscence,

games and puzzles.

Hogarth Wellbeing & Activity Centre provides support to older adults. The centre offers a wide range of stimulating activities that help customers to retain existing skills, learn new ones and to increase physical and mental activity.

The centre offers a welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere giving customers the opportunity to meet and socialise with others in a safe environment, supported by professional and fully trained staff.

Customers at Hogarth can enjoy activities including arts & crafts, bingo, board games, quizzes, light physical games & exercise, reminiscence, music, gardening and entertainment afternoons.

Staff also offer support with personal care where needed.

At Lions Wellbeing & Activity Centre support is offered to adults with a wide range of mental health conditions including schizophrenia, dementia and Alzheimer’s. Lions is based within the Hogarth Centre, alongside Hogarth Wellbeing & Activity Centre which supports older adults.

Customers can enjoy many activities including arts & crafts, bingo, board games, quizzes, pub style games, reminiscence, Nintendo Wii games, music and entertainment afternoons.

The centre offers a welcoming, friendly and relaxed atmosphere giving customers the opportunity to meet and socialise with others in a safe environment, supported by professional and fully trained staff.

St Lukes Wellbeing & Activity CentreRochford

Situated in the old Rochford hospital grounds, St Lukes Wellbeing & Activity Centre has a large welcoming lounge described by visitors as friendly, bright and comfortable.

The staff at the centre support older people living in the communities of Rayleigh, Rochford, Hullbridge, Hockley and Wakering.

Activities at the centre include: bingo, painting, scrabble, cards, musical entertainment, quizzes, knitting and crafts. As well as activities that promote health and wellbeing including chiropodist visits and chairfit exercises.

Tyrells & Tudors Wellbeing & Activity CentreBenfleet

Situated in the multi-purpose Tyrells building, Tyrells and Tudors Wellbeing & Activity Centre supports older people and adults with mental health needs.

The centre aims to meet customer’s needs by offering them the opportunity to enjoy a day out, meet with new friends and share experiences and life stories.

There is always a variety of activities available for customers to join in with, including: table-top games such as cards, bingo and board games as well as floor games such as target practice, basketball and chairfit exercises. Customers can also enjoy arts and crafts as well as reminiscence sessions.

Group meals out are arranged several times a year as well as an annual Christmas pantomime trip.

Loughton Wellbeing & Activity Centre

Loughton Wellbeing & Activity Centre is located close to Debden Broadway, and is set within beautiful grounds. The centre specialises in support for adults with learning disabilities.

Customers at the centre have access to a small horticulture area with specially raised beds to enable easy access for customers who use wheelchairs.

The centre is within half a mile of London’s Central tube line making access to London and the surrounding area for trips out very easy. The centre has a vibrant and creative art group which has produced many fine pieces of work which are displayed around the centre. These follow different themes, ranging from the Olympics to wonderful recreations of indigenous Australian Aboriginal art.

Pyenest Wellbeing & Activity CentreHarlow

Pyenest Wellbeing & Activity Centre is a community centre for adults with special care needs.

The centre provides a service to approximately 30 customers a day, who either live at home with parents or who are in residential accommodation. The centre supports customers with various needs and abilities, including a Special Care Unit.

Each customer at the centre has a detailed person-centred support plan, ensuring that individual goals and aspirations are met. The plans ensure that customers are supported safely, correctly and with continuity.

Pynest provide activities ranging from sensory, cooking and communication groups to theatre production, floristry and needlework. The location of the centre enables staff and customers to easily access local facilities and amenities as well as Harlow town centre.

The Saffron Walden Wellbeing & Activity Centre offers support for adults with learning disabilities in north-west Essex.

The centre provides a vibrant and stimulating atmosphere where needs and expectations of customers are met through an innovative programme of activities. The centre runs a dynamic theatre group called the Great Pretenders that includes customers in all aspects of theatre production from workshops and actual performances through to costume and set making. The group promotes skills such as team spirit, communication, spatial awareness, coordination and self-expression.

The centre is within easy walking distance of the town which enables customers, with the support of staff, to access facilities such as the library and gym. Customers are also able to join the ramble group and learn about growing fruit and vegetables in the centres allotment as well as develop photography skills in the camera club.

Within the centre customers can also become involved in their very own radio station, enjoy surfing the internet in the computer room and enjoy being creative, from art & crafts to pottery, knitting and cushion making.

West Essex Wellbeing & Activity CentreHarlow

West Essex Wellbeing & Activity centre is a small but select service based within Pyenest Wellbeing & Activity Centre in Harlow. The centre is close to local amenities at Staple Tye and is within walking distance of Harlow town centre.

Dedicated staff work at the centre with individuals with a wide variety of needs and they excel in art and craft that are displayed throughout the centre.

Staff work with individuals to promote high levels of participation in various activities that are suitable for the customers in their care and have good access to a sensory garden which includes stimulating scents, sounds and textures.

The centre’s kitchen offers a lunch menu of home-cooked meals that are supplied on a daily basis.

Crocus Wellbeing & Activity CentreTakeley

Crocus Wellbeing & Activity Centre is a very friendly and supportive centre in a village location, not far from Stansted airport.

The centre offers support for adults who have a wide variety of needs that are catered for by staff who are caring yet very professional.

Crocus offers a bright, pleasant environment with a view of a lovely garden. It has ample parking spaces and good disabled access.

The centre provides customers with a two course cooked lunchtime meal daily, from a varied menu of healthy, home-cooked meals.

Customer can enjoy a wide range of activities from arts & crafts, baking, games as well as outside entertainers and outings to local attractions and facilities.

Jessopps Court Wellbeing & Activity CentreWaltham Abbey

Jessopps Court Wellbeing & Activity Centre is situated in the historical and scenic area of Waltham Abbey, and provides support for older adults.

The centre offers a friendly and welcoming environment in which to make new friends, socialise and participate in a variety of activities. The supportive staff are fully trained and aim to meet each individual’s needs and requirements.

The centre also provides a delicious two course lunch and beverages throughout the day.

Merefield Wellbeing & Activity CentreHarlow

West Essex

Merefield Wellbeing & Activity Centre is a purpose built modern centre with a warm, friendly and relaxed atmosphere. It is an ideal environment to make friends and to socialise with others.

The centre is set within beautiful surroundings with a peaceful garden and a pond full of unusual and protected species as well as a family of ducks who return each year.

Every day at the centre is different, with a variety of stimulating activities available including reminiscence, singing, crafts, and a care package designed to meet each individual’s needs.

Customers can enjoy a two course lunch served by our trained, professional and friendly staff in a safe and pleasant environment.

Accessing Our Services

If you are interested in attending one of our Wellbeing & Activities Centres there are two routes you could take:

You can pay privately for our services by contacting us directly. Our charges are noted overleaf.

You can contact Essex County Council social services (Adults, Health & Community Wellbeing) for an assessment for care and support, and, if appropriate, they can then refer you to our service. This can be either via their in-house teams or they can set you up with a personal budget. Alternatively if your application is unsuccessful you may pay privately for our services.

A Glossary of Essex Cares Services

Reablement - helping individuals to regain the skills and confidence that they need to remain independent in their own home after a spell in hospital or a period of ill health.

Outreach - supporting individuals at home and within their local community.

Home Share - Host Carers offering day support at their home for a small group.

Sensory Service - providing training and advice in daily living skills to promote safety and independence and providing specialist equipment for hearing and/or visually impaired adults.

Telecare - fully trained staff on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week 365 days a year to visit homes following emergency calls from bed sensors, door sensors, smoke alarms etc.

HomeSafe – a range of products and services offering everything you may need to support independence at home and in the local community. Aids and equipment can be delivered to your door and adaptations completed by trained assessors.

Work Based Training - providing hands on experience and training for adults with learning disabilities across a number of different industry sectors including: catering, horticulture, printing, packaging and conference management.

Linked Employment - supporting individuals with learning disabilities into paid employment. With help in CV writing, job searching and interview techniques through to on the job training and coaching.
