“Oh de casa, nobre genteDá licença de chegarAbre portas e janelas
Para em vossa casa brincar”
Moitará Group theatre, since 1988, has
been developing a research on the actor’s
work, trying to figure out the principles
that base this Art, establishing a
foundation on the studies of Mask aspects
and functions in order to work out its own
methodology. Since 2004, in its own place,
the group has been promoting workshops,
lectures, meetings with national and
international professionals, besides
offering to the public its library of books
and audiovisual matters.
Along these years, through a systematic
practice, the group has deepened its
ethnological, technical and scenical
knowledge, carrying out, within artistic
different meetings, projects of workshops,
plays, exhibitions and Performance
Lectures which will contribute to the
reflection over the actor’s work and mask
language within contemporary theatre.
O Grupo Teatral Moitará, desde 1988,
desenvolve uma pesquisa sobre o trabalho do
ator, buscando compreender os princípios que
fundamentam sua arte, tendo nos estudos dos
aspectos e funções da Máscara Teatral a base
para a elaboração de uma metodologia própria.
Desde 2004, em sua sede própria, vem
promovendo oficinas, palestras, encontros com
profissionais nacionais e internacionais, bem
como disponibilizando seu acervo de livros e
audiovisual para consulta pública. Ao longo
desses anos, através de uma prática sistemática,
o Grupo veio aprofundando seu conhecimento
etnológico, técnico e cênico da Máscara,
realizando, em diferentes encontros das artes,
projetos de oficinas, espetáculos, exposições e
palestra-espetáculo que visam contribuir para a
reflexão do trabalho do ator e da linguagem da
Máscara no teatro contemporâneo.

QUIPROCÓ is a ludic play that lives on
Brazilian cultural Universe in order to create
genuine characters, with their dreams, beliefs
and morals, establishing some parallels
between archetypes and Commedia dell’Arte
genders.
QUIPROCÓ bends itself on the joyful soul of
brincantes (people involved in some secular
celebrations throughout Brasil especially
within the North Eastern parts), the
innovational characteristic of story-tellers and
the creative efforts spent on surviving by
Brazilian people. Within an opportunist
meeting, three personas – each one in its daily
routine – try to satisfy their desires, making
usage of surviving strategies and, within an
amusing play of comical troubles, conflicts are
triggered made of pure human feelings.
This play was conceived for alternative spaces
(squares, rooms, alternative theatres…).
“ Quiprocó” é um espetáculo lúdico, que se
alimenta do universo cultural brasileiro
Commedia Dell’Arte. “Quiprocó”
contempla o espírito festivo dos brincantes,
a inventividade dos contadores de causos e
a criatividade de sobrevivência do povo
brasileiro. Num encontro oportunista, três
“personagens-tipos” - cada um na sua
rotina - tentam saciar seus desejos,
utilizando artimanhas de sobrevivência e,
num jogo divertido de qüiproquós, são
deflagrados conflitos dos sentimentos
humanos.
Este espetáculo foi concebido para espaços
alternativos (praças, salas, teatros...).
o espetáculo | the play
as Máscaras deste espetáculo.

My very first impressions on this play had arisen
from the research that Moitará has been
conceiving, for some years, on theatrical Masks, on
Brazilian personas that could summarize within
their characteristics, a vision of the world which is
peculiar and universal at the same time. I glimpsed
that the story to be acted would be established upon
its own characters in a collaboration between the
actor and the director. From here, a wide range of
reflections had come up and originated a creation
process: who would be these personas? Where are
they from and where are they going to? What are
theirs desires, necessities and passions? It was
from these questions, among others, that the Masks
for the play were born. Now, the actors could be
responsible to finding out the soul of these personas
and walk along together within the established
way. We knew, hence, there was a long road to be
explored and we shall need the guts to keep on
moving changing, creating, replacing one thing for
another… Some of the basic references we have
gotten were, essentially, the elements of Brazilian
Popular Culture, with its traditional festivities,
and Commedia dell’Art archetypes and genders. I
stepped together with them, shoulder by shoulder,
heartening them in their way, picking up the results
as if they were precious jewels that would become
gifts… After each step a new challenge that
demanded a great effort from everybody to
overcome those exercises of generosity, and then we
have gone; walking, stepwalking, remembering of
the Harlequins, the Mateus, the Malazartes and
Catirinas, the singers and cattle tamers from the
interior of our Brasil, and everybody who took part
of these qüiprocó, in the sharing of the sacred
sponge-cake spiced by Mirola.
essencial e justo sempre requer muitas tentativas.
dramaturgia final do espetáculo.

The work we did, within Moitará group, with the
language of theatrical masks, always makes me face
my professional and human limits, and because of
that, every work is a new challenge.
It is important to allow emptying myself, finding the
necessary availability, knowing how to get free of recent
discoveries, hence each mask needs to begin its steps on a
blank sheet of paper, where everything can be drawn over.
It does not mean saying that I will not be influenced by
my stepped ways. On the contrary, it is truly determining,
for it is from these paths we find the guts to face the new.
The Mask teaches that finding what is essential and fair
always includes several attempts.
Within our process, in the group, we look forward, as
actors, to being the co-writers of our plays, as the
actual writers are the characters… They do involve us
in their life stories, within their private dilemmas and
their comical troubles, creating their own writing that
will guide the resulting dramaturgy of the play.
Weaving a story, with the threads each character gives
us, creating a plot, even simple, thus truly human,
was the aim of this play.
This work demands so much availability and
perseverance from the actor and a lot of determination
and persistence by the direction, as much as from the
other specialized collaborations with their Art, hands,
hearts, thoughts, tools and voices, making the result
something very concrete.
Actually, for us, the play is part of a process that does not
begin at the very beginning of the creation and does not
finish at the end of its presentation. It is a consequence of
a long process of private and collective knowledge that
will last the time the characters are going to be with us,
as, the story you are about to watch, is only a part of their
lives. Within this QUID PRO QUO, it will be the occasion
to learn with Mirola and her friends!
energia. Agora que ele já havia despontado, precisávamos
trabalhar a redistribuição dessa energia latente, orgânica,
gente acaba descobrindo e construindo as coisas.
Eugenio Barba

Playing with the Mask, in order to construct a
character, has made me undress myself of
every and any thought that would come before
every action suggested by it, its strength lines,
its traces and characteristics.
Dentinho was born in a moment that I, within
my actor condition, was utterly exhausted
after training hard one morning searching its
characteristics; its identity. After several
repetitions, the director had said: Let’s go for
the last try! Then, without knowing where it
came from, or with what strength, as a click or
a finger snap, a connexion with what was
coming from the Mask actually happened: its
channel, its energy.
Now, that it had come from within the Mask, we
needed to work on the re-distribution of this
hidden and organic energy throughout the body.
And like a child learning how to walk its first
steps, its first gestures, its first words, I was
responsible for that, for this new upcoming life.
I do remember the very first word I said: Eita!
I might have guessed the huge work I had to
face. After that: Caçarola! And so on…
I sweated a lot before to find it, now to follow it.
Nowadays, I realize that is only by doing,
what means, through practice, that we come
up to find and constructing things. It does not
help collecting the material or figuring out its
result, it is only through action that we are
solving the puzzle.
“What determine the results are the motivations,
not only the ways of researching. And,
nevertheless, the only way we are able to pass on
are the paths we passed by.” Eugenio Barba
Para mim, antes da Máscara, tudo
era envolto de caos.
A Máscara exigente! eu, com
respeito e rebeldia.
A Máscara - um farol na noite de
desperdícios físicos.
Quiproquó é um processo em
progresso, três personagens
lutando pela sobrevivência - a fome,
a solidão, a ingenuidade.
Agradeço a todos os amigos de
batalha - valeram as lágrimas, os
acordes e o aprendizado.
Ah sim, maravilhoso o encontro!

For me, before the Mask, everything
was a Chaos.
The demanding Mask! And I, fully
respectful and rebel.
The Mask – a light within the night
of physical waste.
Quiprocó is a process at progress,
three characters fighting for surviving
– the famine, the solitude, the
naïveness.
I thank every single friend at the
battle – it was worth the tears, the
accords and the learning.
Oh… sure… wonderful meeting!

Note: “embolada” is a poetic-musical form,
very popular within the North Eastern areas of
Brasil, whether improvised or not, within
binary tempo whose melody is declaimed in a
fast rhythm and short intervals, used by two
soloists in plays as a chorus or as a dialogue.
