ESP Professional Development Study Tour to Peru

Community engagement with local people in the Central Highlands Trip objectives:

Learn - the culture, history, religion, people, geography and country. Discover how different people, businesses, governments, etc. get things done. This study tour provides experiences to open your mind to new and diverse societies (different than our own) and an opportunity to grow as an individual from what you have learned.

Experience – expand your personal universe and understanding of different cultures. Be able to express and share with your colleagues what you have gained personally from the experience.

Appreciate – that “different” is not wrong, just different - and may be even better. There is much to appreciate and value about this culture, including what is and is not there. This trip will broaden your perspectives about a different culture and country.

Adopt – you should be able to use new knowledge gained from a different culture in your particular area of expertise to enhance your teaching and Extension responsibilities.

Relationship-building – both between the ESP travelers to strengthen bonds within the MSUE family and with the Peruvian people, agencies, universities, students and communities we visit and actively engage. This can allow future cooperation and potential assistance in many areas.

Educational opportunities:

Involvement with the community leaders, agencies and educational institutions.

Participate in educational events and research projects.

Specific learning opportunities that can be used back home include agricultural research plot layout,

design and harvesting.

School visitations (elementary school through college) including interaction with teachers and

students.

Engage with Peace Corps volunteers to enhance understanding of their work and influence on

communities.

Work with university students on senior research projects.

Explore the ancient civilizations of Peru.

Planned itinerary includes the following highlights:

Guided city tours, historic sightseeing, and cultural exposure in Lima, Jauja, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Pisaq, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu and Puerto Maldonato

Community development work with Peace Corps volunteers, schools and farmers in Jauja, Marco, and Parco

Natural resources and ancient ruin exploration in Tunanmarca, , Sacsayhuaman, Ollantaytambo, Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu.

Accompanied by an experienced guide and interpreters throughout the entire trip.

Expectations of travelers: Hold a valid US passport, secure travel insurance, and obtain necessary vaccinations. Each traveler will be given a topic to prepare a 3-5 minute presentation to share with the group

(at breakfast or on the bus) describing that day’s itinerary. Participate in evening discussions and reflections of the most meaningful experiences we shared,

and things learned each day. Keep a personal log of activities and thoughts of the entire trip for future reference. Complete a short post-trip evaluation. Have fun and be an active, positive participant learning and appreciating differences.
