The Laboratory has a daunting science mission but desire to educate students and teachers is healthy mindset.

• In 2009, ORNL mentored more than 1200 students and teachers

Page 9: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

DOE’s Community College Institute provides laboratory-based internships

Through a 10-week summer internship, students:

• Conduct authentic research under the guidance of a mentor

• Learn to write a research abstract

• Present at a poster session.

Page 10: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

ORNL offers programs for pre- and in-service teachers.

DOE Pre-Service InternshipProgram• Hands-on research under a

scientific mentor

• One-day a week in class with a Master Teacher

• Seminars to broaden horizons

• Opportunities to write abstracts and papers and to present at poster session

• Opportunities to interact with in-service teachers at the lab

www.scied.science.doe.gov

Page 11: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

DOE Academies Creating Teacher Scientists (ACTS) provides professional development for in-service teachers. At Oak Ridge National Laboratory:

• 8 weeks of mentored research at the Laboratory for 3 consecutive summers

• For middle, high, and community college faculty

• Stipend of $800 per week

• Travel reimbursement

• Housing

• $1,800 per year for professional development and equipment

At ORNL, each summer’s program focuses the research in a different way.

First Summer

• National Science Standards

• Content knowledge

• Inquiry-based instruction

• Nature of science

• Pedagogy skills

• Laboratory safety

www.scied.science.doe.gov

Page 13: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

13

The Goal: to create a cadre of outstanding science and math teachers.

Second Summer

•Assessment options and design (formative and summary) •Data driven instructional decisions•Data collection methods and validity•Technology in the classroom

www.scied.science.doe.gov

Page 14: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

14

Teachers carry their confidence and knowledge to their classes and schools.

Third Summer

•Integration of experiences into curricula•Persuasive presentation skills•Leadership skills

www.scied.science.doe.gov

Page 15: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

15

The diversity of participants enables teachers to learn from each other.

• Ethnicity• Gender• Geographic location• School size• Courses taught• Student demographics• Teaching experience

16

Stimulating research projects and rigorous accountability make ACTS a top-notch development program.

• Self assessments• Education modules• Professional development

plan• Education artifacts• Poster presentations• Abstract writing

Page 17: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

Participating teachers have done amazing things with their experience.

• Increases in content knowledge and confidence

• Hands-on activities added to the classroom

• Research classes and new courses implemented

• Presentations and workshops conducted

• Conferences attended• Awards and promotions received• Educational grants applied

for/received• Involvement in science

competitions

ACTS Success Story: Hakan Armağan is Impacting Hundreds of Nebraska Students as a Result of His ORNL ACTS Experience

• Conducted research at ORNL’s Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility for 3 summers

• Overcame an initial fear of nuclear energy

• After one year in the program, developed a course in energy and nuclear science for high school students

• Incorporated hand-on activities and research into his classroom

• Is planning to offer his course through distance learning across Nebraska

• Presented at the American Nuclear Society’s Winter Meeting

• Was featured in ANS’s Nuclear News

• Credits ACTS with increasing his confidence and making him a better teacher AND scientist

Page 19: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

DOE wants teachers/scientists to help bring research experiences to others.

ACTS Teachers:• Have learned the value of an authentic research experiences• Have the connection with DOE research projects and scientists• Are prepared to develop projects that can be exported to thousands of other

teachers and students so they can have authentic research experiences in their own classrooms.

Page 20: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

Collaborations between scientists and ACTS teachers bring ORNL research directly to the classroom.

• Superhydrophobics• Hybrid Lighting • Renewable Energy• Material Sciences• Biofuels• Environmental

Remediation• Nanoscience• Effects of Compounds

on Fish Development• Climate

ACTS teachers have found many opportunities to bring ORNL Research to the classroom:

Page 21: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

ORNL’s Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Project Goes to the Classom

Page 22: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

SNS to the Classroom brings cutting edge science directly to students.

• For teachers of advanced physics and math students

• 3-day workshop in Oak Ridge followed by series on Webinars with scientists

• Scientists teach accelerator basics

• Teachers work with real SNS data

• Software is provided to allow students to modulate a simulated neutron beam

Page 23: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

ORNL, ARC, and ORAU partner to bring a taste of research to Appalachia.

• Two-week residential summer institute

• Teams of students and teams of teachers conduct mini-research projects under the mentorship of ORNL scientists and retirees.

• Long term impact studies show that most students attend college; many major in science.

http://www.arc.gov/program_areas/

ORNL2010Summer.asp

Page 24: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

• Sponsored by ARC, ORNL, and ORAU

• One-week residential camp

• Focus on energy themes – solar, wind, biofuels

• Hands-on learning and discovery

Middle school science camp excites Appalachian students about science.

Page 25: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl

Siemens Teachers as Researchers (STARs)

• Two-week residential professional development program

• For middle and high school teachers

• All expenses are paid

• Mentored research conducted in teams at ORNL

• Seminars, field trips, tours

Page 26: Esip presentation july 2010 ornl
