Workshop on RIs for RE&EE in EU-MPC countries 16th January, 2015, Ben Guerir, Morocco

Importance  of  Research  Infrastructures  Ø  Broad  consensus  that  future  compe''veness  in  globalising

knowledge    economies  depends  on  research  capability,  required:  –  investment  in  educa'on  and  research  ins'tu'ons  –  access  to  first  class  research  infrastructures

Ø  Coordina'on  on  European  (and  global)  scale  increasingly  needed  because:  –  limited  investment  funds  available  –  increasing  level  of  infrastructure  investments  needed  to  remain  at  cu[ng

edge  –  problems  require  broad  data  sharing  and  networking  between  na'onal

nodes  >  distributed  research  infrastructures

Ø  Research  infrastructures  are  innova'on  and  skills  hubs,  not  (just)  big  machines  and  big  datasets

| PAGE 5

RIs  may  be  ‘single-‐sited’  (a  single  resource  at  a  single  loca'on),  ‘distributed’  (a  network  of  distributed  resources),  or  ‘virtual’  (the  service  is  provided  electronically)

European  Strategy  Forum  on  Research  Infrastructures

A  strategic  instrument  to  develop  the  scien'fic  integra'on  of  Europe  and  to  strengthen  its  interna'onal  outreach

ESFRI  Mandate  –  Council  of  EU  in  2001

Ø  Support  a  coherent  and  strategy-‐led  approach  to  policy-‐making  on  EU  RI

Ø  Facilitate  mul'lateral  ini'a'ves  to  the  be_er  use  and  development  of  research  infrastructures

Ø  Act  as  an  incubator  for  pan-‐European  and  global  research  infrastructures

Ø  Facilitate  decisions  on  their  implementa'on  and  ensure  follow-‐up  a`er  assessment

Mission  of  ESFRI

ESFRI  roadmaps

Roadmaps  iden'fy  new  pan-‐European  research  infrastructures  or  major  upgrades   to   exis'ng   ones   to   meet   needs   of   European   research  communi'es  in  next  10  to  20  years  in  all  fields  of  research

ü  First  Roadmap  published  in  2006

ü Followed  by  two  updates  in  2008  and  2010

ü Now  contains  48  projects

ü Requires  major  financial  investment  (~€20bn)  and  long  term  commitment  for  opera'on  (~€2bn/year)

Landscape  of  RIs  for  Nuclear  Energies

Global Challenges: -  Innovative reactor concepts -  Advanced fuel cycle technologies -  Secure, clean and efficient energy system.

Nuclear Fission and Fusion With a share of about 30% in EU’s electricity production, nuclear energy provides today most of the low-carbon electricity consumed in the EU.

Nuclear Fusion à success ITER

Nuclear Fission -  Maintain high levels of safety in the

operation facilities. -  Small but very radioactive quantities of

nuclear waste produced must be managed appropiately.

International competitive

Economic, Environmental and Social Impacts

WHAT? – Energy Systems Analysis

HOW? – Exploring and modelling the impact of a number of key data and indicators –socio-economic, environmental as well as technological – on energy systems’ transition

WHY? – Crucial role in supporting a successful EU transition to a low carbon energy system

WITH? – Interplay of Energy RIs with virtual infrastructures such as networks, archives and databases / need for specialized energy focused E2S

Existing RIs: - Partial (e.g. JRC ELCD (European reference Life Cycle Database) - Too Generalistic (Euromanifestos)
