1.0 SCOPE Argus Machine Co. Ltd. (Argus) manufactures a Self-contained Hydraulic Pump Module (HPM) used on Emergency Shutdown (ESD) systems. This manual covers the installation, operation, and maintenance of the HPM. 2.0 GENERAL Installation, operation, and maintenance of the HPM shall comply with the procedures as described in this manual. 1) Operating temperature range is -50F (-46C) to +200F (+93C). 2) Maximum system supply pressure is 1500 PSI (10,342 kPa) 3) Reservoir capacity 77 fl. oz. (2.2 litres). 3.0 SAFETY Many routine procedures are potentially hazardous if executed incorrectly or in unsafe conditions, particularly when toxic/flammable product is present. Caution must be exercised when high temperature and/or pressure exists in the system. Other precautions should be observed as listed below: 1) Always follow government and site safety regulations. 2) Use of appropriate safety equipment and clothing is mandatory. Eye protection should be used when

operating the HPM. 3) Never strike the HPM or attached equipment. 4) Any fittings or accessories must meet the service requirements of the application. 5) Always use Argus O.E.M. parts for service or repair. 4.0 HANDLING AND STORAGE 4.1 HANDLING 1) Care must be taken to prevent the HPM from being damaged.

4.2 STORAGE 1) The HPM should be stored in a dry environment and should be left in the original packaging prior to

installation. 2) Thread protectors and/or port plugs should remain in place until the HPM is to be installed.

5.0 INSTALLATION 1) The Argus Hydraulic Pump Module has been designed and built for indoor or outdoor environments with a

    temperature range from -50F (-46C) to +200F (+93C).

NOTE: The standard HPM is shipped with Univis J13 which is good for ambient temperatures from -50F (-46C) to +130F (+55C). Replace the Univis J13 with Automatic Transmission Fluid for -20F (-29C) to +200F (+93C) service.

CAUTION: Do not add or use any other types of hydraulic fluid in the HPM.

    2) The HPM must be securely attached to a suitable mounting fixture with the oil reservoir to the bottom of the

assembly. Mounting holes are provided at the back of the manifold plate.

CAUTION: Do not mount the assembly horizontally. This will cause the HPM to malfunction. 3) Remove the 3 port plugs which have been installed for shipping purposes and ensure dirt or debris does not

get into these ports prior to installing fittings. 4) Using a suitable thread sealant on all fittings, attach clean tubing and/or hoses to the SIG and EXH with

the corresponding ports of the Argus High and Low Pressure Pilot. Using similar means connect the hydraulic actuator (quarter turn or linear) to the ACTUATOR port located on the right side of the manifold.

CAUTION: Do not use teflon tape on fitting threads as pieces may break loose and block or damage

internal valve components of the HPM. The use of teflon based pipe thread sealant is recommended.

    5) Connect any auxiliary Shutdown devices to the auxiliary ACTUATOR ports and run exhaust fluid back to

the auxiliary EXH port on the left side of the manifold plate.

    6) Control lines and actuator lines should be as short as possible. In applications where longer lines are required and/or temperature changes are severe, it may be necessary to install a hydraulic accumulator to the actuator line in order to compensate for expansion and contraction of the hydraulic fluid.

CAUTION: If tubing is used for control lines ensure the cut ends are de-burred and cleaned prior to attaching any tubing fittings.

    7) The HPM is supplied with a Tee handle which can be left in the clevis of the pump or can be placed on the side of the manifold plate in the storage bracket provided.

6.0 STARTUP 1) Once all the lines have been installed the air must be purged from the entire system. 2) With the Pilot in a Shutdown mode, lift the arming lever on the Latching Trip Valve and operate the hand

pump until the actuator fully opens the flow line valve. It may be necessary to purge the air from the actuator line by cracking open the fitting closest to the actuator.

    3) Pressurized hydraulic fluid will force the air from the signal line going to the pilot. For longer lines cracking open the fitting on the signal line at the pilot will aid in purging air from this line.

    4) Pump the actuator open and dump the pressure using the Over-ride Valve, repeat this procedure several times to ensure all air is purged from the system.

7.0 OPERATION 1) If the Pilot is attached to an Isolation Valve ensure the valve is in the open position. 2) To start up the ESD system, lift the arming lever on the Latching Trip Valve. 3) Operate the hand pump until the hydraulic fluid pressure fully opens the flow line valve. 4) Flow line pressure is sensed by the Pilot, if this pressure is between the high and low set points oil

supplied through the Bias Restrictor energizes the Latching Trip Valve and the system is put into an armed status.

    5) In the event the flow line pressure is outside the high and low settings of the Pilot, hydraulic fluid flowing through Bias Restrictor will slowly allow the flow line valve to close.

    6) If flow line pressure drops below or goes above the Pressure Pilot set points the signal pressure will be exhausted. This will cause the Latching Trip Valve to shift and dump actuator pressure, closing the flow line valve.

    7) Pushing down on the red handle of the Over-ride Valve will manually bleed hydraulic fluid from the actuator causing the flow line valve to close.

WARNING: Relief valve is preset at the factory and should not be adjusted.

8.0 MAINTENANCE The Argus Self-Contained Hydraulic Pump Module is designed and built to provide years of trouble free service when properly installed, operated, and maintained. 1) Check for leaks once installation and initial system startup has occurred and at routine intervals afterwards. 2) Under normal operating conditions the hydraulic fluid (Univis J13) does not have to be changed unless it has

been contaminated with dirt, debris, and/or moisture.

    9.0 TROUBLESHOOTING

    Problem Possible Causes Possible Solutions

Hydraulic pump does not draw hydraulic fluid from the reservoir.

    a) Fluid level in reservoir low. b) Filter screen at the bottom of

suction tube plugged. c) Air lock in hand pump.

    a) Fill reservoir to proper level. b) Remove reservoir from manifold

and clean filter screen. Replace hydraulic fluid if contaminated.

    c) Hold red handle of Over-ride

valve down while operating hand pump.

Pump handle moves upward once the system is fully pressurized.

    a) The check valve located in the

    pump body is leaking.

    a) Replace hand pump and send

    for service.

    Actuator slowly shuts in.

    a) Leaks in Pilot and/or hydraulic

lines or fittings. b) At least one of the components of

the HPM is allowing fluid to escape from the actuator circuit and drain back to the reservoir.

    c) Actuator seals leaking.

    a) Repair leaks in the Pilot,

hydraulic lines or fittings. b) Using the assembly drawing on

page 3, depicting the exhaust ports of the various components, establish which component is leaking. Replace the faulty component.

    c) Have a qualified service

technician repair or replace the actuator.

Pressure supplied by the HPM to the actuator is insufficient to open the valve.

    a) Relief valve on HPM is not

    adjusted properly.

    b) Actuator or valve is stuck.

    a) Check HPM hydraulic pressure.

Attach a pressure gauge to one of the actuator ports on the manifold plate. See operation section for startup. Pressure on the gauge should be between 1300 PSI (8,963 kPa) to 1500 PSI (10,342 kPa). Have a qualified technician adjust the relief valve pressure to proper value or replace and send defective component for service.

    b) Have a qualified service

technician repair or replace the defective unit.
