Urban Design Laboratory?

The Urban Design Laboratory (UDL)
Why do classic planning tools not work?
• No political will, no real projects defined, etc.• Zoning is not enough to tackle urban problems, design proposals are needed• No inclusion of urban agents and stakeholders• Lack of information between stakeholders• Stakeholders on government level don’t work together, singulary decisions• People centered planning is not working with static planning tools• Dynamic and flexible tools require creativity• No time for creativity• Government is afraid of losing control• Technical professionals are not prepared• No integration of multidisciplinary teams• Take a long time to develop• …
![Page 12: ESCI Academic Partnership Program 2014-15](https://reader033.fdocuments.net/reader033/viewer/2022052605/568caba11a28ab186da64bbe/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
The Urban Design Laboratory (UDL)
What is the UDL?• Is an experimental planning tool developed for urban design projects • Is a participatory design methodology, where we develop projects through
– Workshops with all social agents of the city / sector– Exchange information– Participatory diagnoisis and analyse– Creation of a common vision and planning goals– Elaboration and discussion of a series of urban scenarios– Design an alternative Urban Intervention of the city / sector– Actors give feedback on the design
Why do we need the UDL?• Give fast answers / solutions to multisectoral, urban problems• Inclusionary planning through participation of all agents• Innovation in the planning sector, introducing … creativity

The 5 steps of the Urban Design Lab / UDL1. Preparation and investigation: about the sector, it’s main problems,
set up a stakeholder mapping and observations of main challenges of the sector. Define planning area.
2. Analysis and Escenarios (Workshops): Interactive Interpretation and assessment of the sector through a participation procress: principal challanges, problems / weeknesses, potentials and elaboration of various urban scenarios in focal grounps
3. Elaboration of a preliminary urban strategy 4. Feedback Workshops: Feedback of the strategy through
consultation of the stakeholders and test projects with them (role plays, SWOT Analysis of the proproposal, etc.)
5. Elaboration of a conceptual urban design study and Presentation, discussion and reflection of the final proposal
