Winter WonderlandThe tour’s highlight is a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Nine Villages Valley – an area of snowy peaks, frozen waterfalls and emerald lakes

n Days 1-2: Fly to Beijing Fly overnight to Beijing, China’s capital city.

n Day 3: Beijing Walk across Tiananmen Square. Explore the Forbidden City, originally constructed in the 15th century, consisting of almost 1,000 buildings. Visit the Temple of Heaven which was used by the Chinese Emperors for ceremonies and prayers. In the evening enjoy a Peking Duck dinner.

n Day 4: Beijing Visit the Great Wall of China, the most iconic attraction in the country. The section you will visit is Juyongguan, one of the lesser visited sections that provides some of the best views and climbs available. Afterwards visit the Summer Palace which is a large recreational area noted for its gardens and traditional Chinese architecture. Tonight enjoy a fascinating Chinese acrobatic show.

n Day 5: Terracotta Warriors This morning, transfer to the airport for your flight to Xian. In the afternoon, visit the Terracotta Warriors, one of the most important and enigmatic archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. In the evening enjoy a local Shui Jiao dumpling dinner and watch a traditional Tang Dynasty dance show.

n Day 6: Xian Take a walk on the Ancient City Wall of Xian, one of the best preserved city fortifications in China. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province.

n Day 7: Chengdu Pandas Visit the Chengdu Panda Reserve. Stroll around the grounds to observe the pandas in a natural habitat and visit the informative museum to learn more about the achievements of the breeding program.In the afternoon, fly to Nine Villages Valley (Jiuzhaigou), possibly the most beautiful nature sight in China. Located in the mountains of Sichuan, the national park is a wonderland of forests, waterfalls and lakes. This area has a particularly magical feeling in this winter season. This evening, join a local family for a traditional local dinner.

n Day 8: Nine Villages Valley Travel to the top of the valley and take in the view at the picturesque Long Lake. Take the short walk to Five-Coloured Lake which is said to be one of the most beautiful in the park. Also see the cascading waters of Nuorilang Falls. After lunch take a longer walk following a string of water features. Complete the day with a visit to a Tibetan temple.

n Day 9: Shuzheng Village Visit Shuzheng Village, the largest settlement within the park. Here you will meet with a local Tibetan family who will give you further insight into local life in Nine Villages Valley. Today’s walk starts at Rhinoceros Lake and passes Tiger Lake, ending at Reed Lake. On the way look out for an old watermill, prayer wheels and the colourful Tibetan prayer flags. Fly to Chengdu and enjoy a Sichuan dinner while watching a traditional Bian Lian ‘Face Changing’ performance.

n Day 10: Chengdu – UK Transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK arriving the same or following day depending on flight schedules.

n Day 6: Terracotta Warriors Visit one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century – the Terracotta Warriors. The figures were created over 2,000 years ago to accompany Emperor Qin Shihuang into the afterlife. Later fly to Chengdu.

n Day 7: Grand Buddha of LeshanTravel to Leshan to visit the Grand Buddha, the world’s largest stone-carved Buddhist statue. You’ll take a short boat trip to view the statue from the river. Return to Chengdu, visiting the old town of Huanglongxi en route. Sample a delicious Sichuan meal in the evening.

n Day 8: Giant PandasVisit the famous Panda Conservation Centre to see these charismatic animals being reared in wooded surroundings reminiscent of their natural habitat. Later, stroll along the ancient Jinli Street.

n Day 9: Fly Chengdu to UKFly to the UK, arriving home the same or following day.

n Day 3: Explore Tokyo One quarter of all Japanese people live in Tokyo or the near vicinity and with a population of over 12 million inhabitants, Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world. The street level detail is what makes Tokyo such an incredibly interesting place to explore and at every turn you will be met with an array of sights, sounds and smells to enliven the senses. The city has many major sights to visit such as Senso-ji Temple in the old downtown area of Asakusa or the fashion hub of Shibuya from where all new trends are said to emanate. (B)

n Day 4: Mount Fuji & Hakone Head south-west of Tokyo to Hakone for breath-taking views of Mount Fuji, Japan’s tallest and most iconic mountain. Afterwards, travel to Hakone National Park where you will cruise Lake Ashi and visit the Hakone-en Gardens. Take a cable car up Mount Komagatake for even more spectacular views of Mount Fuji. (B)

n Day 5: Travel to Yudanaka Travel on Japan’s ultra-modern and super-fast train network through spectacular snow covered landscapes to Nagano, the host city of the 1998 Winter Olympics. Take some time to visit the iconic Zenkoji Temple, one of the most important in Japan. It was founded in the 7th century and stores the first Buddhist statue ever to be brought into Japan. Afterwards, continue your journey deep into the northern mountains of the Japanese Alps to the onsen resort town of Yudanaka. (B,D)

n Day 6: Yudanaka Onsen Enjoy exploring the hot spring town of Yudanaka today, taking in all the sights, including the famous snow monkeys who come down from the mountains during the winter months to soak in the natural hot springs at the Jigokudani Monkey Park. The monkeys completely ignore their human watchers and you can spend hours watching them play, and even swimming in the onsen. (B,D)

n Day 7: Bullet train to Kyoto Don’t expect any delays or signal failures as you board the speedy bullet train for a thrilling train ride across the Japanese countryside to Kyoto, a city famous for its traditional Japanese lifestyle and Geisha performances. (B)
