Escape From ata CreekIt has come to our attention by reading legiti-mate news publications that there are plans topossibly build a prison somewhere betweenMeadowbrook and ata Creek. We here atKimberley Chronicle have not ormed anopinion on the subject; however we immedi-ately thought o a story we published over ayear ago upon hearing the news. Its the leg-end o how ata Creek got its name.

As with most local legends, there are varia-tions on the story o how a a Creek got itsname. It is generally agreed that the namecame about aer an incident involving a two-pistol toting lawless rogue named NormanRed McLeod. Red McLeod arrived in theEast Kootenays in the early 1890s and was ap-parently quite the swindler. Legend has it hewould steal horses and sell them to the Great

Northern Railway, then steal them again andsell them to the CPR. Some sayhe was eeing aer a shootingat the Wasa Hotel, others say hehad recently escaped rom jailin Golden when he had his run-in with police near what is nowa a Creek. Some legends statethat he was on horseback and
