Structure ESC Magic Dragon Phonics is made up of three levels according to the different sounds worked. The sounds are taught to enable children to practice these sounds in words as early as possible. Each sound matches its corresponding video sound and activities for practice and consolidation. This also makes possible to work these sounds in words and insert them into different contexts creating meaning from the very beginning and contributing to the construction of knowledge. Each level also contains nursery rhymes and a poster that comprise all the sounds of the level. All the levels are divided into lessons. Each lesson is be divided into three parts or blocks that include different type of activities: Block 1: Identifying Students are exposed to the sounds they are going to work on. They access to the website, watch the video of each sound, repeat it orally and practice by listening and reproducing orally the pictures and flashcards corresponding to that sound. Block 2: Listen and tell! This block will be split into three parts comprised of recognizing sounds, differentiating sounds and producing sounds. o Recognizing sounds: Students are given two or more words that contain the same sound. So they identify the sound these words have in common. o Differentiating sounds: Students are given three ore more words. Some of them contain the same sound but another one has a different sound. ESC MAGIC DRAGON PHONICS

Introduction

1. Aim

ESC Magic Dragon Phonics is a method created for children to develop phonetic competence in order to improve the production and articulation of the English language sounds.

2. Structure

ESC Magic Dragon Phonics is made up of three levels according to the different sounds worked.

Each lesson is be divided into three parts or blocks that include different type of activities:

• Block 1: Identifying

Students are exposed to the sounds they are going to work on. They access to the website, watch the video of each sound, repeat it orally and practice by listening and reproducing orally the pictures and flashcards corresponding to that sound.

• Block 2: Listen and tell!

They children identify the odd one.

Page 2: ESC MAGIC DRAGON PHONICS - editora sc · 2016. 11. 3. · phonetic competence in order to improve the production and articulation of the English language sounds. 2. Structure ESC

o Producing sounds and rhyming words:

§ Students are given two words of the same sound so they have to say another one with that sound.

§ Students are given two words that rhyme so they have to find a rhyming word.

• Block 3: Activities

This block consists of three types of activities (one different activity per lesson) to practice and consolidate the sounds worked. These activities increase their complexity gradually taking care of the physical and mental development of the child. This progression allows the adequate acquisition of sounds in English. o Manipulative games: students practice the sounds through

different games using the flashcards. Flashcards are not only an important visual support, but also a motivating element for the student. These games are based on recognizing, differentiating and producing sounds. Students acquire new knowledge in a fun way.

o Interactive games: students practice sounds with digital games on the digital whiteboard. These are very attractive and beneficial for children´s learning of sounds. They reinforce the sounds´ learning and increase student´s participation, attention, motivation and comprehension.

o Nursery rhymes/tongue twisters: The use of nursery rhymes

and tongue twisters, helps students to develop an early sensitivity to the sounds of language. We can teach skills related to phonics such us sounds discrimination, rhyming… They also provide students´ opportunities for oral language development, enrich young children´s vocabulary and are fun and engaging for them.
