The Jade Bracelet by Mary Frances Chong teaches us many lessons. Discuss. In the short story, The Jade Bracelet, written by Mary Frances Chong, there are a lot of lessons that we can learn. First of all, we can see the lessons on filial. At the beginning of the story, we can see how Mrs Wong taking a very good care of her mother who is bed-ridden. Even all her neighbours are surprise on her willingness to take care of her mother for 4 years. “Why, even the neighbours were perpetually surprised at the extent of her filial devotion”. Secondly, we should help others. In this story, we can see how Mrs Lee helps Mrs Wong to prepare for grandmother’s funeral. She also always visits grandmother. All Mrs Wong’s neighbours always come to visit grandmother. This is where we can get the lesson that we should help others that need our help. “It was indeed fortune that one of these good people had happened to visit her that morning”. The third lesson that we can learn is we should respect dying person’s wish. In this story, grandmother wishes to give her jade bracelet to her granddaughter that she loves very much that is Siew May. She wishes to give it to her after she is gone. But after her death, Mrs Wong does not fulfil grandmother’s wishes. For her, the jade bracelet should be given to the son and the only son in the family is Fook Kee, Siew May’s uncle. “Uncle will have it- Ah, Fook Kee, since you are the only son in our family you ought to take it”.
