Students should come to school wearing a winter coat, a hat, gloves/mittens, boots and snow pants if necessary. At school, we like for the students to go outside for recess as much as possible. Going outside and getting some fresh air helps students learn through the second half of the day. It is our policy here at school to go outside for recess as long as the temperature (and the wind chill) remains above 20 degrees Fahrenheit. This includes going outside in the snow. Let’s work together to be sure all our students are warm and comfortable when they go outside. THE RAINFOREST IS COMING! On Tuesday, December 9th, our students will take part in a short presentation by Understanding Wildlife, a non-profit organization. Animal trainers will present snakes, monkeys, kinkajous, beautiful parrots, macaws, and cockatoos from around the world. They will explain how energy conservation and recycling can help save the beautiful animals of the rainforests. That evening, Tuesday, December 9th, there will be an awesome program for the entire family at Yake Elemen-tary at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Students will be able to interact with a few of these magnificent creatures. Flying macaws, talking ama-zons, and very mischievous monkeys will keep you laughing all night long. The cost for the evening program is $5 per person (children under 3 are free). All children in attendance must be accompanied by an adult.

The Leader in Me Your child is learning the 7 Habits as a tool for developing personal leadership. Habit #2 — Begin with the end in mind. To begin with the end in mind means to have a plan! It is important to think about how you want your situation to end. It is about setting goals and making a plan to achieve the end goal. “I plan ahead and set goals. I do things that have meaning and make a difference. I am an important part of my classroom. I look for ways to be a good citizen.” Habit 2 teaches that “Beginning with the End in Mind” or having a mental picture of achieving a goal can lead to a better way of doing it. For example, imagine doing a 100 piece puzzle with no picture of it finished, cooking a new dish without a recipe, or driving to a new place with no map or GPS. How to Do This With Your Child: 1. Have your child identify a goal that is meaningful to them. 2. Help your child visualize a “picture” in their mind achieving the goal; you

could even have them draw the picture. 3. Have them break it down into manageable, specific steps; write the steps

down. 4. Check their progress and offer support. Discuss final results and celebrate

effort.

You probably noticed the Bucket Fillers at Parent Teacher Conferences. Here is a description of Bucket Fillers: WE ARE BUCKET FILLERS!

The idea of Bucket Fillers is based on the book "Have You Filled A Bucket Today? (A Guide to Daily Happiness For Kids)" by Carol McCloud. The premise of the book is this...

We all carry an invisible bucket that contains our feelings. When our bucket is full, we feel great. When our bucket is empty, we feel sad. A bucket filler is someone who says or does nice things for other people. By doing this, they are filling other people's buckets and filling their own bucket at the same time.

On the other hand, a bucket dipper says or does things to cause other people to feel bad. A bucket dipper empties their bucket when they say and do mean things.

How do you fill a bucket?

~ Showing respect by always treating others the way that you would want to be treated

~ Helping others when they are sad, hurt, or need assistance

~ Including each other

~ If someone is lonely ask them to play

~ Saying hello

~ Introducing yourself

~ Show appreciation

~ Sticking up for each other

~ Be kind and caring

~ Smile

~ Ask someone: How are you doing? Or...How is your day going? How do you fill a bucket?

What is dipping?

This is what you don't want to do, because when you dip into a bucket you take out good feeling and thoughts, which empties other buckets and it empties your own. It makes you and others feel bad.

o Calling people names

o Making fun of someone

o leaving someone out

o teasing

o bullying

o hurting someone's feelings

o hitting, punching, kicking, pushing, or pinching

o Not showing respect for others and things around you

HAPPY BUCKET FILLING!!!
