Dear Editor,

This last couple of weeks we have heard of nothing on our national news and in the papers other than stories of our politicians' brushes with the law. How they may or may not have acted appropriately, and how as individuals and as public figures they should know better etc etc. Well, I for one feel that there is far too much time wasted in the Dáil and in the media on who did what and if it was appropriate and lets have a referendum because someone thinks it's a good idea. Did we elect these people to sling mud at each other? No, we did not. We elected them to represent us and our country. At this time they should be working together on how to make this a better country for all of us, not having a go at each other every chance they get. It's embarrasing. Seems like some of these guys have too much time on their hands - throw them out I say! Anonymous

CommunityAras Inis Gluaire‘Art in the Afternoon’ Showcase at Áras Inis Gluaire On Wednesday 8th May, the Men’s Community Initiative at Áras Inis Gluaire proudly put on

a display of paintings which are a colourful collection of works by our group of men who meet here every Monday afternoon. The ‘Art in the Afternoon’ sessions have been facilitated by Joe Murray over the past few months and have proved very successful. The classes will resume again in September for all men over 55 and new participants are encouraged to come along & join the group. No experience is required and the two hour sessions are very relaxed and informal. Depending on demand, it is possible we may also open up these sessions to women over 55 who may enjoy painting. The showcase was launched by artist Amanda Jane Graham who praised the men on their fine achievements. Amanda also has a fine exhibition hanging upstairs in the Gallery which is well worth a look. Refreshments & music by Michael S Togher followed and a lovely afternoon was had by all! The display will remain hanging in the foyer area of the Civic Centre building throughout the month of May as part of our ongoing themed Bealtaine festival ‘Celebrating Creativity As we Age. ’ Do pop in and see the wonderful work, you won’t be disappointed! If you require further information or would like to sign up for the September ‘Art in the Afternoon’ sessions, please contact our Community Officer Lorraine Wilson at Áras Inis Gluaire on 097 81079.

Mayo Genealogy Group was established just over a year ago and a committee was formed last summer. I, Kathryn Murphy was elected P.R.O. for the Erris area and also secretary for the group. My role as secretary is to take the minutes of the meetings which are held every second Saturday of each month from 11a.m. to 1 p.m. At the meetings we discuss the agenda which is compiled by the Chairperson and when the meeting ends members help newcomers and others research websites relating to ancestry/genealogy etc.My role as P.R.O. combined with the business I run with my husband Pap Murphy, would like to invite all genealogists both local and further afield to come together here at Turas Siar, near Clogher Post Office, 11 miles outside Belmullet on the Blacksod Road for a genealogists gathering. Turas Siar is a language and culture research centre and we specialise in local history, archaeology, genealogy, local crafts, family gatherings, local placenames and their meanings. We are open 9am til late to the public 7 days a week.We would like to discuss with all genealogists, a gathering at Turas Siar and when it could take place which would be suitable for everyone so why not give Pap or myself a call on 097 85011/ 087 6990505 for further information on any of the above. Ah, ag fásadh suas.Tá sé cosúil le síol ó phlanda.Cuireann tú an síol sa talamh

Wagon Wheel LyricsHeaded down south to the land of the pines And I'm thumbin' my way into North Caroline Starin' up the road Pray to God I see headlights

I made it down the coast in seventeen hours Pickin' me a bouquet of dogwood flowers And I'm a hopin' for Raleigh I can see my baby tonight

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel Rock me mama any way you feel Hey mama rock me Rock me mama like the wind and the rain Rock me mama like a south-bound train Hey mama rock me

Runnin' from the cold up in New England I was born to be a fiddler in an old-time stringband My baby plays the guitar I pick a banjo now

Oh, the North country winters keep a gettin' me now Lost my money playin' poker so I had to up and leave But I ain't a turnin' back To livin' that old life no more

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel Rock me mama any way you feel Hey mama rock me Rock me mama like the wind and the rain Rock me mama like a south-bound train Hey mama rock me

Walkin' to the south out of Roanoke I caught a trucker out of Philly Had a nice long toke But he's a headed west from the Cumberland Gap To Johnson City, Tennessee

And I gotta get a move on before for the sun I hear my baby callin' my name And I know that she's the only one And if I die in Raleigh At least I will die free

So rock me mama like a wagon wheel Rock me mama any way you feel Hey mama rock me Rock me mama like the wind and the rain Rock me mama like a south-bound train Hey mama rock me

'Can It' ProjectGeesala Tidy Towns recently collaborated with Geesala National School and some members of the local active retirement group in a 'Can It' project, which entails finding creative or innovative uses for recycled drinks cans. The children and retirement group had great fun painting the butterflies for the project.

Clean Coasts Olivia Crossan presented a Clean Coast programme in Áras Inis Gluaire on Tuesday, May 7. Clean Coasts is an organisation that was established in 2001, consisting mainly of volunteers, and its main aim is to engage local, coastal communities in the protection and enhancement of their coastline. Olivia highlighted the issues they have faced and how they have set about improving the environment. Examples of issues that they have faced are: the aftermaths of bonfires, parties and fly tipping; marine damage poses a huge hazard as ropes and fishing boxes also contributed to shore line waste. Among the issues raised were items most commonly found along the shore line e.g. cigarette butts, caps and lids, plastic bags etc. These items have a catastrophic effect on birds and fish that would ingest them, therefore, wildlife is a mere victim of the damage being caused daily. The programme sets about helping to identify invasive and rare species with the help of wildlife advisors. The success of the Clean Coasts programme in these counties has lead to the project being offered nationwide, with advice being given on beach cleaning, marram grass planting, assistance in environmental awareness and keeping organisations open to promote best practice. In the area of Belmullet alone, Termon, Shraigh and Portacloy were among those awarded in 2012. Further information can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Flickr as well as www.cleancoastsweek.ie.

Erris Wheelchair AssociationThe Irish Wheelchair Association Erris is a voluntary organisation providing services to people with disabilities and the elderly in the Erris Area. Our Centre in Logmore is a hive of activity with something for everyone available. Many people think you have to be a wheelchair user to attend the centre, this is not true. In fact the majority of our service users are independent senior citizens looking for company, fun and activities such as arts and crafts, bingo, 25 card games, swimming and exercise to mention but a few. Would you like to join our Wednesday, Thursday or Friday groups and avail of transport, hot meal and regular outings. All you need to do is ring Rose on 087 6673360 and we will gladly welcome you to our centre. The best way of keeping young and active is by getting out and meeting people and having a chat and a laugh and there is certainly plenty of that in the IWA Centre. So if you know of anyone who needs to get out of the house and socialize in a friendly caring setting then give us a call.
