Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation On Friday, October 14, more than 700 Canadian leaders, 2011 Manning award winners, 13 laureates, trustees, selec- tion committee members, sponsors, volunteers and supporters from across Canada helped the Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation celebrate its 30th anniversary in Edmonton. The Foundation awarded $163,000 in prizes to the 2011 winners. “We were honoured to have Senator Pamela Wallin, O.C., S.O.M., return for another year as the gala’s emcee,” said Foundation Chairman John Read. Mayor Stephen Mandel welcomed guests on behalf of the City of Edm- onton and praised the Foundation’s support of Canadian innovators. “We are grateful to the dedicated gala steering committee under the leadership of Bob Bowhay for their hard work in creating the Foundation’s 30th anniversary gala,” said Mr. Read. The gala was generously sponsored by Scotiabank, a sponsor since 1981. Guests were welcomed by Chris Bruce, Vice President of the Scotiabank’s Edmonton district. Edmonton Economic Development donated talented artists Bella Rouge to sing the national anthem and the Strath- cona String Quartet to perform during the reception. The next day, Saturday, October 15, a Celebration of Innovation symposium was organized at the University of Alberta by Sol Rolingher, chair of the Foundation’s Northern Alberta Chapter and his volunteer team. Award win- ning science journalist, author and broadcaster Jay Ingram moderated the day-long symposium and networking event. The Ernest C. Manning Awards Foundation proudlypresents 42 qualified nominees for the 2012 ManningInnovation Awards. This year’s innovators are fromAtlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba,Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia.Innovations include high-end medical imaging;environmental technology; new software; marineand transportation safety; social innovation; bicycletechnology; learning tools and energy generation.

being developed all over Canada. “The Foundation’smandate is to encourage and recognize those with theimagination to innovate and the stamina to succeed,so that Canadians successfully compete in the globalmarketplace,” he said.

Nominees are carefully screened to ensure they meetthe awards criteria. In May, the Foundation’s selectioncommittee, a distinguished body recruited from acrossCanada, will be choosing winners from this diverse andinspiring spectrum of innovators.
